taylorportman··on Show HN: CookTime – Recipe index
The (food!)recipe site I find myself frequenting lately is: https://www.tfrecipes.com/vmlinux-error-137/
taylorportman··on I’m not convinced by the new lab leak debunking
The "china" leak has always been a red herring and hopefully people have noticed that the emphasis was always supposed to be gain of function research anyone can do anywhere. The finger pointing aspect is distracting when the real concern is the rapidly evolving underlying technology. The scientists disposition really doesn't matter.. it's not like physicists are responsible for all of the nuclear devices that have been detonated, thousands. Those (and these) scientist's owners will be deciding what their developments will ultimately be used for but in this I don't see that there are any entities capable of leveraging this next wave of "progress" that will be capable of amazing and horrific potentialities.

Speaking as an enthusiast, it does seem like there will be a shift from certain drugs being manufactured by a pharmaceuticals producer to self-manufacture from mRNA sequence delivery. I wonder what it means for pharmaceutical companies that have IP for, say insulin, but someone else claims control of the mRNA code that triggers it's production?

I stumbled across this one recently, from their Please Read at Least Once:

"A word about the philosophy of this site: These pages are declared to be a fluff-free zone! There will be no unnecessary, superfluous, or useless graphics of any kind - including but not limited to: dancing, gyrating, or other animated icons, colored textured backgrounds that are impossible to read through, or forced downloading of bit intense pictures that may be of no interest to you. Nor, will I ever expect you to use a particular brand of Web browser to be able to effectively access these pages. There are and never will be any advertisements, cookies, or other impositions on your time and space. In the time that it may take wading through a single monstrosity of the professional Web page designers at other sites, you will be able to find out what you want to know, when you want to know it! What a concept. :-) (Note, however, that your browser needs to be configured properly to make sense of the many ASCII diagrams, schematics, and tables. See the document: Suggested Browser Settings for font and other related information.)"

taylorportman··on Anarchists making their own medicine (2018)
Probably the 'manufacturing revolution' will be modifying yeast, plants, etc. to produce the chemical compound of interest. Everyone needn't have expensive equipment - testing can be outsourced. Such an effort would need a GPL like agreement to keep people honest, but the technology exists.
taylorportman··on Tesla remotely unlocks Model 3 car, uses smart summon to help repo agent
Definitely needs to be a thing. idk if it has been on HN yet but there is a opengarages.org site that has a nice ebook if anyone is interested.
taylorportman··on Unbreakable phone screens could be made with a new material
The pixel3 is decent and the beta version of the new android 12 can be installed easily enough.

Just in case - tarps aren't always the advertised size. A 20x40 tarp, for instance, is probably 19x39.
taylorportman··on AWS Service Terms 42.10
Then you are agreeing that they will not access or use your data without agreement. Where is the confusion lol.
taylorportman··on The metaverse is already here, it's called the internet
How do we describe the "meta" phenomnom anymore, we need a new word for "meta" and I've been struggling but can't figure it out. What replaces the word "meta" if someone takes it, "gist"!?
taylorportman··on Meta
Before their user base "dies off" they will enjoy a period of convalescence a be of a generation to appreciate VR/AR once they can't move good.
taylorportman··on I made my own garum
They have a method of cooking fish from Peru, called ceviche, just using lemon juice to lower the ph that does all of the work. Incidentally, I believe sauerkraut needs a bit of lemon juice to maintain a ph that discourages botulinum from inhabiting the cabbage during fermentation. The ceviche method isn't a fermentation process - it can cook fish in the fridge in half a day.
taylorportman··on Mother of all lawsuits quietly filed last month vs. Facebook in Delaware
If a company is raking it in and not paying taxes then I don't see a problem with holding them to any applicable fines.
taylorportman··on Social Networks: It's worse than you think (2020)
How does hackaday do it? I think it is the focus on details, the absence of popularity metrics that tend to skew in favor of distracting comedies.
taylorportman··on A Battery Spot Welder Made from an Old Microwave and Excessive Mahogany [video]
The magnetron can have insulators made of a toxic substance that can be dangerous as a dust. This guy is just using the transformer for it's convenient laminates and primary winding - probably could have used a similar transformer with suitable current handling capacity but dead microwave ovens are fairly common. I have 3
taylorportman··on Tesla Packs 50B Transistors onto D1 Dojo Chip
With the recent buzz about AI semiconductor design and drive for domestic semiconductor manufacture they are likely positioning themselves to be capable of investing in the next generation of fabrication. Leverage with the government and potential funding.
