taway483··on China bans 23M from buying travel tickets as part of 'social credit' system
"Social credit offences range from [...] to spreading false information" - this is what it's really about. Force citizens to spread government propaganda and make it impossible to challenge those in power.
taway483··on China’s surveillance state has created at least four billionaires
If you lived in North Korea, do you think your North Korean friends who like the job their government is doing would outweight those who don't?

Would you dare to criticize the government if you were in their position? This video does a great job at illustrating the situation your Chinese friends face: https://vimeo.com/44078865

I think you do a great disservice to the Chinese people by assuming that they don't care or that they support it. The fact is that they're helpless. They have nothing to gain by expressing their true beliefs and everything to lose. I have many Chinese friends and they all either post government propaganda (that they don't believe in or support) on weixin or stay quiet. Why? Because it will be seen by their families, friends, classmates, professors, coworkers, bosses, etc. When they go travel, want to get a loan, a promotion, etc. then it will play a major role.
taway483··on Why Google needed to build a graph serving system
I loved working with Dgraph, but I hate doing system/database administration work.. do you have any plans of providing a hosted solution?
taway483··on China Seeks to Repeal Presidential Term Limit
Probably both. Everyone, including and especially China's own citizens, should be very afraid of the current regime and its path towards a surveillance state. I don't think anyone in this thread actually expects China to fall within a few years, but it isn't unjustified to believe that this will be the downfall of China, and that we should be very worried about an upcoming war.
taway483··on China's Xinjiang surveillance is the dystopian future nobody wants
As a French citizen, that's a very big risk to take. I speak from experience when I say one tiny mistake (that would be a non-issue in most Western countries) is all it takes to get kicked out of the country, after which they'll deny your Visa for years with no obligation to tell you why. It doesn't matter if you own a house in China, it doesn't matter if you've invested hundreds of thousands/millions throughout your stay there, it doesn't matter if you lived there for 10 years without a problem, it doesn't matter if you're a month away from graduating from Tsinghua/Beida, etc. If you've been to China before then you've probably already broken the law in many different ways, such as not going to the local police station whenever you stayed at a hotel/switched apartment/stayed at your friends/partners place, etc. In other words, settling down and investing a lot of money into a life in China is a disaster waiting to happen.
