taurknaut··on Show HN: I Built a Reddit-style Bluesky client – still rough, but open to ideas
Dunking on people is like half the value of twitter-like platforms. I only go on twitter (or I'm guessing bluesky) to see politicians and journalists and pundits and celebrities get dunked on. It's a public square: open moderation of social values is half the point. It's the conflict that makes us stronger.

Haters will say dis/misinformation makes it not worth it, but i simply point out that it's the truly stupid people who speak the loudest and you need to look deeper. There's no going back to a world where for-profit media is above critique. The relentless violence in palestine firmly endorsed and enabled by western media has pretty much destroyed any faith I had that our for-profit media is capable of self-regulation. Dunking on these morons is a public good.

What we really need to figure out is a way to systemically encourage punching up, not down.

taurknaut··on Representing Graphs in PostgreSQL
> rather than abusing existing relational databases for graph purposes.

In my experience, the vast majority of graphs can be embedded in relational databases just fine and most people don't want general graph querying. People just don't like optimizing queries (or equivalently the schema to enable such queries).

I personally have never seen a pitch for graph databases that makes them seem attractive for more than data exploration on your local machine.

taurknaut··on Searchcode.com's SQLite database is probably 6 terabytes bigger than yours
Presumably the database needs to be distributed to servers, too. The engine needs to access something. This is a necessity whether or not it's referred to as a binary.
taurknaut··on Searchcode.com’s SQLite database is probably 6 terabytes bigger than yours
Reading without write contention is not a terribly difficult problem. You could use any database and it'd work fine. It's the mutations that distinguish db engines. Sqlite is indeed close to ideal but the comparison to other databases (at scale no less) is without substance.

This comment appears to be the only place between article and thread where mongo getting recommended is even mentioned. Maybe stop giving them free press. I certainly haven't heard anyone seriously suggest them for about about ten years now.

Edit: ok the other guy mentioning mongo is clearly being sarcastic

I imagine the original use of "bull market" was derived from this practice. If this isn't the case i have no clue myself.
taurknaut··on AI can interpret animal emotions better than humans
I'm very aware of these archives. They are very clearly not sufficient to train a model to interpret asl to the standards of corporate america. Let alone the standards of an arbitrary human. Hence my above post.
taurknaut··on Uchū – Color palette for internet lovers

When someone gives this opinion, I think to myself they surely must be terrified of a stranger killing their wife with a rock (or merely desiring it themselves). How else can you excuse or explain such an impoverished imagination?

If you are actually looking for an answer and not simply to comfort yourself, I heartily recommend Shaman by Kim Stanley Robinson.

taurknaut··on Spanish 'running of the bulls' festival reveals crowd movements can be predicted
Why else would you put a bull in front of the stock exchange except as commentary on assholes pitching bull markets? How could you possibly construe this as a coincidence?
taurknaut··on Spanish 'running of the bulls' festival reveals crowd movements can be predicted
Crowd density is certainly the key here. Over a certain density crowds move like a liquid. Under a certain density crowds get much more difficult to model.

This is not new in any way, btw. This paper seems to specifically address the running of the bulls.

taurknaut··on AI can interpret animal emotions better than humans
Sure, but this completely neglects the aspects of humanity we left behind moving into sedentary communities. We will be forever blind to what we lost, and the morons among us will claim we lost nothing.
taurknaut··on AI can interpret animal emotions better than humans
Hard to imagine this hasn't already been done for decades. What role would AI play?
taurknaut··on AI can interpret animal emotions better than humans
ASL seems like a really hard problem. I've learned a fair bit myself being friends with a few interpreters and deaf people and two different people can sign the same thing in a way that would look very different to an AI. Sometimes it feels like you have to put a fair bit of effort into understanding how a specific person signs (from my very inexperienced perspective). I'm curious if this could be overcome with sufficient data, but where is this massive archive of videos of sign? There are some databases certainly, but nothing close to the level of which we have written and spoken english via the internet. Plus then you get into regional and cultural dialects... i think banks will be obligated to hire interpreters for the forseeable future.
taurknaut··on AI can interpret animal emotions better than humans
...than untrained humans, presumably, because otherwise how would you produce the model?

The working class should complain, that's their role in liberal democracy. Better complain about energy prices than armies of invading muslim rapists.

taurknaut··on Carbon capture more costly than switching to renewables, researchers find
Why not both? We've been claiming to want to reduce carbon emissions since before I was born. It's not even a hard pitch—if we're insanely wealthy and have the capacity to discuss greening our grid and still can't or won't, why would you reasonably expect countries with basically no capacity to do this to forget about centuries of globalization, colonization, and exploitation? We burned the globe; if we want to heal this, the most reasonable approach is good-faith reconciliation and remediation.

But the way conversation is now we're headed straight towards ecofascism. A healthy globe for me but not for thee (as if this even makes much sense).

taurknaut··on How Medical Research Cuts Would Hit Colleges and Hospitals in Every State
> after all they are bad at it

This is really strange framing. Profit is a form of inefficiency. It's quite easy to generate profit—just take from others. How we came to view it as something that makes more sense to structure society around than zero-margin services is bewildering. There isn't a single responsibility government has I don't trust private enterprise to deliver less competently and at greater cost.

taurknaut··on How Medical Research Cuts Would Hit Colleges and Hospitals in Every State
Well it's certainly more effective than the DoD at providing value per cost.

The singular Israeli lobbying organization of AIPAC, not a vague and unnamed set of Jewish lobbying organizations. Israel does not represent Judaism; it represents itself. I don't appreciate the disingenuous and ham-handed attempt to paint this as antisemitism. Ironically I see this paranoid and incredulous "russian agent" talk as precisely the behavior you're describing (albeit just a shallow conspiracy theory, not antisemitism). Both Putin and Bibi will be more than willing to take advantage of dysfunction in addressing the other to fuel their narratives about american domestic instability and hypocrisy.

You can trivially look up donations. It's difficult to link to just AIPAC so I'll just put this here: https://www.politico.com/news/2024/06/09/aipac-republican-do...

Mind you, this is still a stronger case for another state blatantly interfering in our elections than the what $36 million to the NRA and a small buy of facebook ads (~$100k, which is a tiny drop in the bucket compared to domestic interests). And this alleged "kompromat" (good grief, read better propaganda)

taurknaut··on Show HN: I Built a Reddit-style Bluesky client – still rough, but open to ideas
Right, but there's more to blocking than content filtering (which is more akin to muting in twitter nomenclature). It should also restrict the blocked person from interacting with my content. At least that's what I'd expect (and I suspect most would).
taurknaut··on Show HN: I Built a Reddit-style Bluesky client – still rough, but open to ideas
Presumably you still need server code to prevent blocked users from interacting with each other, no?
taurknaut··on Show HN: I Built a Reddit-style Bluesky client – still rough, but open to ideas
I'm struggling to come up with what intent this behavior was supposed to perform. I block probably one person every other thread.

I don't block you because I had some kind of conflict, I blocked you because I don't like what you tweet and I don't want to see it and it's not clear what "not interested" actually does. Why this would impact anyone other than whom I'm blocking is perplexing. I certainly can't vouch for what they want to see and whom they want to interact with.

> Burning stuff for grid energy should stop ASAP.

Sadly I think the only viable route to this is wealthy countries paying poor countries to dismantle these power plants (and presumably replace them with something equivalent).

This has two nice benefits. One, wealthy countries show they act in good faith. Two, this will greatly reduce wealth disparity.

Of course, there's the chance some people will threaten to emit gas to acquire disproportionate power. This is true, but still preferable to the west just roasting the planet and then blaming china. Like grow tf up.

Can you answer my questions? You're being evasive.

Ukraine would have been rejected slightly more politely by Harris. You're elevating a rhetorical difference to obscure that AIPAC primarying two democrats over their stance on israel gave republicans the house.

It sure would be nice to not have just a rhetorical difference over our most shame-ridden ally. But yea, Putin is dog walking trump into checks notes pushing for cutting military and nuclear stockpiles. Disgusting.

I hate Trump, but it's this conspiratorial crap about Putin while refusing to acknowledge AIPAC that makes me know moderates/centrists/maddow-watchers will always cave to ignorance and fear.
