taurknaut··on Thomas Aquinas' skull reveals appearance and cause of death
> Chesterton described Aquinas as looking quite like Chesterton.

I was unaware that Chesterton met Aquinas! He must have been quite old at that point.

I can't imagine anything that Chesterton could add to this conversation. He's reading the same texts the rest of us are. TBH this pretty much sums up his entire career.

tbh I can't ever imagine american society functioning that well. Someone would get shot

Very odd dichotomy. Did you never consider living in a world that has no bread lines nor advertisements? That seems like the one most would choose. In this country, we have both bread lines AND advertisements!

The idea of banning advertisements never struck you? That seems like the obvious way forward.

I'll believe it when I see it. This smells like boarding-school braggadocio.

I think about a large cluster of cars, say 6-12 cars, going roughly the same speed. Nothing about that entails blocking multiple lanes, certainly not densely enough to preclude someone from passing.

It reads pretty naturally to me as referring to the implementation of the driver.

Ironically, it's quite annoying figuring out what actually gets executed when you open a gui app on linux. I think the same is true on Windows.
taurknaut··on Rwandan scientists develop local yeast for banana wine-makers
Pectin breaks down into methanol. Particularly fruit wines and liqueurs will end up with hyper-concentrated methanol. Water will help but cannot remove the pain of actually passing that methanol.

Granted, it's not so bad with the first glass. But with three, be prepared for a nasty hangover. At least this is my experience with applejack. Professionally-made apple jack may be cleaned up more (I kind of hope it is).

How is clumping indicative of bad driving?

Aren't people funny like that? One person values an encyclopedic chatbot for company, the next prefers a human. Thank god we can all get along.

> In fact we have full agency over whether we are interested enough to listen and trust the arguments, just like any other persuasive message.

I definitely do not make conscious choices about swiping. It's entirely reaction. The line between "full agency" and operating automatically is incredibly blurry.

Well i've certainly never heard of this browser before and it still seems pretty young. I'd guess it's the same issue.

taurknaut··on Okta Bcrypt incident lessons for designing better APIs
Maybe it should. Discarding the rest of the bytes works fine for passwords, though. I guess that's just not sufficient.

taurknaut··on Okta Bcrypt incident lessons for designing better APIs
> but they wanted a hash function with unlimited input size

I'm kind of baffled how they came to use bcrypt for this. Bcrypt is not exactly subtle about only supporting 72 bytes of input. And this is at a company who provides auth as a service; I've got to imagine they had multiple engineers who knew this (I guess not working on that code). Hell, I know this and I've only used bcrypt twice and I'm nowhere near a security/crypto guy.

taurknaut··on Avoiding outrage fatigue while staying informed
The concern is understandable, I suppose. It's just a convenient way to see clips from both sides of the conflict, and it's the best source for combat footage clips anywhere. I do have a working brain and can use it to identify when people have a polemic. I prefer it to telegram, which is the alternative. The comments are indeed... uh, very strident in their support for either side. So I'm not sure if it's "propaganda" so much as people regurgitating propaganda at each other at full volume.

Anyway, it's a war. Propaganda is essentially impossible to avoid without ignoring the topic entirely. Still, it's what we have to work with. And to be clear my sympathies lie with the ukrainian people.
