tathougies··on Societal Collapse
I mean, there have been famines in recent human history in which people have allegedly turned to cannibalism and other behavior we would consider barbaric?
tathougies··on Lack of Vitamin D is associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection and mortality
Yes, costco sells 10000 IU ones.
tathougies··on Lack of Vitamin D is associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection and mortality
It's not though. That is to say... people really ought to check their blood results and act appropriately.

The truth is that in northern latitudes, anyone with dark skin is simply unable to meet their vitamin D intake from sun exposure alone. In certain parts of America, and a lot of Europe, a dark skinned person spending the entire lit part of the day outside buck naked is still not enough to synthesize enough vitamin D to be sufficient. Supplementation or dietary ingestion is necessary.

For me, as a dark skinned person in a northern latitude, my levels were very low. Taking 2000 IU a day did nothing. I had to take 10000 IU a day in order to appreciably raise my Vit D levels. That is what we found after checking with a doctor. I would recommend anyone else do the same. 5000 IU + is typical for people with vitamin D deficiencies. Some doctors even recommend extremely high megadoses to reset your vitamin D intake.

The United States will enter a new foreign conflict with biden as president.

tathougies··on Companies are fleeing California. Blame bad government
Sure there are but none had ever gotten to the point of actually being enacted other than prop 13. in a working state, legislators would have self discipline and not require direct propositions to be kept in line.
tathougies··on Companies are fleeing California. Blame bad government
Yes Salt Lake City has done it to much more success than SF. Of course, Utah and SLCers in general tend to also be more charitable than SFers, so it's hard to say what would happen in SF if they were to do this, given that the population is full of seeming misers.
tathougies··on Companies are fleeing California. Blame bad government
Well when elected officials misspend tax money, it's only an inevitability that propositions like prop 13 pass. People on here talk about prop 13 without having actually lived in CA before Prop 13. Before prop 13, there was still lots of bad governance, so voters decided to at least cap the amount they were going to spend on stupid policies.

Surprised no one on here has mentioned the obvious gorilla in the room: leftist "progressive" policies that make business impossible.

tathougies··on Ask HN: What are you surprised isn’t being worked on more?
I mean the religion christianity is today is even more caring of the widow and orphan. The catholic church alone operates a shocking 26 percent of the entire worlds medical facilities. That doesn't count protestanrts or the orthodox.

The difference of course is that the cultural hegemony of christianity has made charity expected

tathougies··on FDA grants authorization to Moderna's Covid-19 vaccine
No, I read that the doses reported by the government are the full two doses, so if there are 100 million doses, then the government has 200 million shots.
tathougies··on FDA grants authorization to Moderna's Covid-19 vaccine
The US has 100 million doses of Pfizer and 50 million of Moderna, enough to cover a bit under half the country. Then, it has 500 million of the Oxford vaccine. Altogether, this is more than enough to cover the country. And then it has the option to purchase more..

> And how was that service made available before YouTube existed?

I mean, we used to have this thing called visiting friends or gathering in a public space, which the governments of most states have currently prevented us from doing, leaving the internet to be the only option to reach any audience.

So yes, insofar as the public square is an essential function and since it's been banned from physically being a reality, then the government must assure that there are alternatives, or undo the physical bans on gathering. There is no pandemic exception to basic civil rights.

Unfortunately, what we have here is a major double standard where leftists can freely gather in the streets to protest police brutality, but right wingers cannot without severe media criticism, and police action by governments.

tathougies··on YouTube to remove content that alleges widespread election fraud
Oh just like private companies who don't pay their employees a living wage can't take away freedom, because their employees are free to just work somewhere else, like Uber drivers right? Oh yeah, forgot about that.
tathougies··on YouTube to remove content that alleges widespread election fraud
So let me get this straight. Government is restricted from preventing the free exchange of ideas, but private industry is not. However, government is free to mandate us to stay in our homes and not see anybody, thus leaving us with privately owned telecommunications companies as the only way to communicate with others, and they are free to prevent speech.

Wow... funny how this all works out so convienently.

But really this is dystopia level rhetoric. "Your freedom to speech is not really being restricted. It's just that because you're locked in your house (since being outside talking to your friend is apparently not a fundamental freedom), you can't actually talk to anyone because your private sector companies say so."

Well sure, Reinhoehl shot at the Marshals first (according to some witnesses at least) and fled arrest. That is what was reported immediately after the shooting. That's not a summary execution, that's serving a warrant for arrest. That's due process of law.

You are changing the goal posts substantially. Wikipedia defines a summary execution (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summary_execution) as being accused and then immediately killed without trial. That is not what happened to Reinoehl. He was accused, a judge issued a warrant. He was given the opportunity to come and face justice. He did not. Instead he shot at police. They shot back.

In order for it to have been a summary execution, Reinoehl would have to have been captured and well under the Marshal's control and then killed. Or he would have had to indicate that he surrendered and been shot anyway. That is not what happened.

Ultimately, this situation would have been easily resolvable had Reinoehl turned himself into police, like Kyle Rittenhouse. Sad anyone had to die, most of all Reinoehl's victim, Aaron Danielson, who for some reason (that we all know) is completely ignored in all this.

Can you name a way in which Trump has exercised any power which could be characterized as 'proudly authoritarian'? The man has honestly done very little in office. He says outrageous things of course, but he has not praised 'summary executions' (he condemned the jacob blake killing) nor does he celebrate violence against the press. I understand not liking the man's policies, but the hyperbole surrounding him is just as bad as the stuff he says.

> Does your "no 'buts' regarding freedom" go so far as to tear down democracy in favor of a would-be dictator's "freedom" to commit treason?

The United States is not a democracy. It is a constitutionally limited republic, where the federal government is supposed to be highly constrained to protect the rights of the people, including nominally the right to disestablish it (see the declaration of independence). From the American perspective, tearing down a democracy that violates people's individual rights would be acceptable. Indeed, that is the American revolution in a nutshell if you ask the British, isn't it?

> The Steele dossier includes information from Russian sources. It was not "paid for" by Russia.

Literally in USA today today my man: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2020/11/10/we-d...

Quote: When the FBI obtained the dossier in September 2016, compiled by a former British intelligence agent Christopher Steele, Comey told lawmakers he was unaware Steele's primary source was a suspected Russian agent.

A Russian agent is someone paid by Russia. Hence the dossier was sourced from misinformation spread by a paid Russian agent.

> The implication of working coronavirus vaccine by end of October was that it would be available for use (you can find quotes from the Trump administration saying they were working on distribution of hundreds of millions of doses by the end of the month), not that there would be a preliminary report from a still ongoing trial indicating that the vaccine works.

Trump said there would be news of a vaccine. Obviously, it won't be available by November. If you listened to Trump or Pence, you'd know that the US arranged for a working vaccine to be delivered by December or January, not November.

> The question was whether it led to improper behavior on the part of Joe Biden. That email proves nothing. It's entirely plausible that Hunter Biden got this guy an invite to some social function where shook hands with the Vice President.

And indeed, that would actually make Joe Biden's claim that he had no involvement with his son's business dealings a lie. Biden could have been honest and said, I met a few of my son's friends but we never discussed business. However, he didn't. He unequivocally stated that he had absolutely no knowledge of his son's business dealings and had no interaction with anyone from Burisima. That is a lie.

> The prosecutor was fired for not investigating the company that hired Hunter Biden.

Then why did the new prosecutor immediately drop charges and investigations against Burisima? if this was the reason he was fired and replaced, shouldn't the new prosecutor then take up the charges?

Sorry for the late reply. Hacker News has partially shadow banned me for not toeing the party line.

tathougies··on Times Change: Inside the New York Times’ Heated Reckoning With Itself
I did not vote for Trump in 2016. Yes, for the past few months I have become a Trump supporter, ever since the fake impeachment attempt, I have supported the president. Supporting Trump for a few months after not supporting him for years is hardly some great evidence that I'm lying.

EDIT: Oh look downvotes at me explaining my very plausible change of heart on trump. Apparently HN knows my ballot better than me!

tathougies··on Times Change: Inside the New York Times’ Heated Reckoning With Itself
Nice dodge of the question! I cited specific examples of ludicrous things he's said that have come true, and you cite small lies he's told. I can do the same for any politician you name, that doesn't mean they never say something worth listening to.

Like I said though... Keep going. People like you have converted me from a never Trumper to a Trump supporter. And people like you have converted my aunt, a former Obama-supporting liberal, into avid pro-Trumpers. Honestly, from my perspective, I say keep going on and do whatever it is you do. It'll just make more people like me.

tathougies··on Times Change: Inside the New York Times’ Heated Reckoning With Itself
Okay, sure, Trump misrepresented that maybe -- although his tax returns are typical of someone with lots of depreciable real estate, and don't have much evidence of fraud.

But let's talk about other so-called trump 'lies'. What about the continued doubts by the NYT that there would soon be news about a working coronavirus vaccine at the end of October, early November? What about the Steele Dossier that is now known to have been paid for by Russia (which Trump said at the beginning, but was claimed to be a lie)? What about the forced firing via threat of withholding aide of the Ukrainian prosecutor by Joe Biden, who denied being involved with his son's business dealings in the Ukraine? We were told that was lies, but there is indisputable DKIM evidence that an e-mail from Burisima to Hunter Biden thanked him for meeting his father while he was in office (https://github.com/robertdavidgraham/hunter-dkim). Are those lies too?

Sure Trump lies, like any other politician. But sometimes he tells the truth, and the truth is so ludicrous, that it seems like lies, but when it finally comes out that it was true, we all sit and say to ourselves... maybe we should believe the guy. But I mean... continue on with the denial, you'll just turn more formerly anti-Trump people into pro-Trumpers.

tathougies··on Times Change: Inside the New York Times’ Heated Reckoning With Itself
It is okay, and in fact preferable to pick a side, but they portray themselves as 'objective' and 'rational', when they're clearly biased. Just remember the Nick Sandmann story and the subsequent lack of introspection (as well as the continued insistence that the boy did anything wrong on the NYT's behalf).

Glad to see this at the top. Indeed the officer did not violate the law. I believe some state even issued guidance that said slogans like Black Lives Matter or Make America Great Again, were okay. You simply cannot say "Vote Biden" or 'Vote Trump'.

I mean, I guess. On the other hand, if you have a niche side project (I have several in a rather niche language), then you become known in the community.

Most people's 'side projects' don't shine on their resume because the side project is just a replica of one hundred other projects that do the same thing. In order to be known for a side project, you have to make sure the audience is small enough for it to make a difference, but large enough that there is commercial interest.
