tatalegma··on Soda May Age You as Much as Smoking
Aren't those drinks full of sugar too? How much better than soda are they?
tatalegma··on Ask HN: What to do about a coworker who ignores questions / interrupts you?
Are you fresh out of school? Are you more junior than this other engineer? I feel like you might be suffering what I have seen in a lot of engineers who are fresh out of school, where they want to question everything, argue about things, and constantly look for ways to prove a proven engineer wrong. it's like they are trying to make a name for themselves. I've seen this in several jr. levels to varying extents. Just make sure you aren't being like that.

If you are more Jr., make sure you are taking the other engineer's advice. Even if he/she is being abrasive, he/she may have valid points. It may also be the case that they are annoyed that you aren't paying them the respect they feel they deserve as the more Sr level engineer.

As davidholmesnyc said, you can't do anything about it, other than adjust your own approach. You will not get the other person to change. If it's a big enough problem, find another job. Complaining to a higher up will not help, sadly.

Don't forget, the nutrition bloggers (paleo, vegan, etc) will get more fuel for cherry picked blog posts so they can sell more ads, products, newsletter sponsorships, etc.
tatalegma··on What do you use for service discovery?
Can someone give a really brief description of what service discovery is, and when/why one would need it?

What's wrong with simply having a config file that tells your code the URL for each service it depends on (assuming my understanding of what discovery is is valid)?

tatalegma··on Ask HN: Do you still use podcasts?
BeyondPod, and player.fm to listen to podcasts. Yes, people still listen to podcasts.

There was a thread about what software related podcasts people listen to here a week or two ago, you should look for that.

tatalegma··on My Not-So-Smart Smart Home
Not a fan of this writing style. Get to the point. But first, have a point to make (there was none).
tatalegma··on Life Extension Factor Klotho Enhances Cognition [pdf]
Are there any other interesting snp's to check for (not necessarily related to cognition)? I didn't realize that 23andme had this feature. I am also TT for the Klotho one.
tatalegma··on Ask HN: Source for College Admissions Data
Check IPEDS. You can also license or buy this type of data from private companies. The publishers / entities that release school rankings are who you would license it from.
tatalegma··on Plants in offices increase happiness and productivity
"Mother in Law's Tongue" does well indoors, and is also supposedly good at improving indoor air quality.
tatalegma··on Ask HN: Do you recommend coworking space membership for remote worker?
I've been wondering the same thing. If they offer free, decent coffee, the price can be similar to working from a cafe (which I do sometimes).
tatalegma··on San Francisco Open Exchange (YC S14) Aims to Be the E-Trade of Bitcoin
It's either going to become one or the other isn't it? (not sarcastic)
tatalegma··on Azure Search as a Service
Was his server hacked due to the recent vulnerability found in ElasticSearch?

tatalegma··on Show HN: Find a co-founder or side project buddy
I use android and don't have an iOS device, so I can't see your app. But even if you made it an android app, I wouldn't use it because I don't see any reason why I would install an app for this.

I think a website would reach the broadest audience, and I would actually try it out.

tatalegma··on Show HN: Find a co-founder or side project buddy
That's not what mobile first means.
tatalegma··on Loss of neurons for sleep may explain why older adults suffer from insomnia
Why does this work? Any scientific research backing this suggestion?
tatalegma··on Ask HN: Choosing between Microsoft and everything else
You know that you can run an entirely non-.NET stack in Azure? 100% linux servers, PHP, apamongoDB, postgresSQL, mySQL, etc. You can even leverage a lot of the PaaS offerings with PHP/node.js.

I don't know that anyone should take what you have to say on this matter seriously.

tatalegma··on Ask HN: Breaking out of a career silo
I'm in the same boat, more or less, so I can't give advice that I know works, because I'm still in the transition period. What i'm doing is:

- Learning linux ...because every other language I want to learn is not on the .NET stack, and pretty much every interesting job requires linux knowledge.

- Learning other languages I have a todo list of languages I want to try. There are a few I know I will want to go deeper into, which include Scala and Clojure, but for now I have a list of every popular (non-C#) language that i want at least minimal exposure to.

My todo list consists of concrete tasks like "Ruby hello world", "Scala hello world", "Angular hello world". Just knock these things out and then once I have basic exposure to a broad array of languages and tech stacks, I'll decide which I want to focus on, and start adding more concrete tasks to my todo list. This might include contriving a side project that is simple, but more involved than a simple hello world, and then building it out in one or two or three of the languages/stacks. At this point you'll have to start thinking about what direction you want to go, what kind of development you want to focus on. You might want to freelance as a Wordpress or Drupal dev, so you might decide to dive into PHP, or you might want to specialize in distributed systems, so you might focus your experimentations/hello worlds on more back end type stuff.

- Getting better at front-end development. This is the area people like you and me can use as a bridge to transitioning over to non-.NET tech. Assuming you are working in web apps with .NET, you can start to focus on the front end, which means getting really good at HTML, CSS, and javascript, and learning front-end frameworks like bootstrap/foundation, SASS/LESS, and angular/ember. You can do that while still doing .NET on the server side. You can also start working in front end build technologies like grunt or gulp into existing or new .NET projects, to handle front end optimizations, and bundling/minification, image optimizations, etc. This also builds your javascript knowledge, and knowing angular seems like a really marketable skill these days. This in combo with learning linux is enough to get you to a point where you are able to get front-end dev jobs that have nothing at all to do with .NET.

My two cents. I'd be really interested to hear from other developers who have successfully made this kind of transition. I have no idea if what I'm planning will actually work.

tatalegma··on Browser Face-Off: Battery Life Explored 2014
What if you're plugged in all the time?
tatalegma··on Ask HN: Why doesn't your team ship?
Are you implying that shipping multiple times a day means downtime? What about Etsy, where downtime means lost revenue? Facebook? I'm sure if they go down, and therefore people can't view or click ads, they miss out on revenue too.

tatalegma··on SEC Charges Bitcoin Entrepreneur For Share Offering
Very interesting that the shares he issued were purchased in bitcoin, and still the SEC decided to step in. How is this different than if you issue shares and sell them for an in game currency?
tatalegma··on Rap Genius Drops Co-Founder Following Elliot Rodger Manifesto Annotations
Rap music is art (make believe, in case that's not clear), and this was real. This guy literally went on a killing spree and killed multiple people, and the manifesto was his, well, manifesto. And the co-founder who was axed was praising little pieces of the killer's writing. Totally inappropriate.

OK, now that's the basic part of why it was wrong. Now why it was really wrong is that the co-founder was trying to use the killing spree to bring traffic to his site. Lots of people are going to be googling about this killer, lots would be googling his manifesto, so I think the co-founder was trying to make sure his site would come up when they did so. Pretty scummy.

Basically, the context of this being the hate filled manifesto of a guy who just killed people is why.

tatalegma··on Rap Genius Drops Co-Founder Following Elliot Rodger Manifesto Annotations
I'm guessing he was/is on drugs. He's openly talked about using vyvanse and adderall, so he might have been on those and/or other substances. I've generally assumed he was high any time I hear about the dumb shit he does or says.
tatalegma··on [dead]

tatalegma··on Nerdsniping: A glimpse into a stubborn mind
"I want my code to execute if port is 80 or 443, and http is false"

Couldn't you simply do this?:

if ((a==='80'||b==='443') && http===false) { ... }

tatalegma··on An Advocate for Women in the Valley Quits GitHub, Citing Harassment
The ironic thing is, that yes, "real HR" would have prevented the wife from harassing Julie, but only because their motivation in doing so would be to protect the company, not Julie.
tatalegma··on Update on Julie Horvath's Departure
It's not unprofessional and doesn't harm her credibility. That would only be true if what she said was fabricated (and there is no reason to believe that's the case).

It is also easier for her to go public than to try to sue a billion dollar company, and have to be involved in a lawsuit for years. Nobody wants that hassle.

Bullies are able to operate because people keep quiet. Going public is often the best way to defeat a bully. The founder, his wife, and the employee who ripped out her code never thought the general public would know about the things they did. If they did, they would never have done them.

tatalegma··on Update on Julie Horvath's Departure
To respond only after the issue was brought public? No, that is no leadership. It's the best possible response he could give under the present circumstances, but on the flipside, he had no choice but to make this statement. I wouldn't be surprised if it was crafted for him by a PR person or firm.
