tasogare··on Tell HN: Amazon fraudulently canceling orders as returned items

Love that punchline, it summed it all.

tasogare··on Tell HN: Amazon fraudulently canceling orders as returned items
> shopper who is currently reevaluating their relationship with Amazon(unfortunately not for the 1st time either)

How many more times before you start acting on it for real? I had two bad experience Amazon France and never used since then. This company is crap, not only for buyers but for employees and traditional retail too. Also evade taxes. If you want things to change it's time to stop using it for real.

tasogare··on Ask HN: What are your 2022 predictions?
I agree that at first a lockdown was arguably a somewhat half-reasonable option when the dangerousness of covid was unknown but since then it have been very clear that it's impacting only a very small segment of the population (very old people and those in overweight), yet it has been handled as if everyone were at risk.

At this point covid is a manufactured crisis used by governments as a power grab over citizens freedom, and pharmaceutical groups to get magic money. This has to stop. The lives of young people, who need to study, socialize, meet a partner, start a career are heavily negatively impacted by all those measures taken to save a few retired people that already did all those things. This is profoundly injust. Scared of covid? Then fine, do a personal lockdown but don't ask for the whole society and human interactions to stop for this. People would barely notice it's existence (like in Africa) if the media weren't speaking about it.

tasogare··on Payments in Japan
What was baffling is how very big chains didn't (or still don't) accept cashless payments until recently. IIRC Saizeriya started to accept credit cards this year.
tasogare··on Scientists mystified as Africa avoids Covid disaster
That's probably is it. A disease deadly for 70+ years old people won't do much in Africa where people usually don't reach that age anyway.
tasogare··on FDA wants 55 years to process FOIA request over vaccine data
That's a strawman considering the overwhelming majority of people taking vaccine aren't doing it for scientific reasons either. They're taking it because of social pressure, virtue signal, fear, etc. but certainly not knowledge about science since less than 1% of the population is PhD educated and know anything about how science is done in the first place.
tasogare··on Mozilla publishes position paper on the EU Digital Identity Framework
The common method to deal with avian influenza is killing all the livestock when one case is detected. Your comparison is scary and uncanny, but well aligned with how violent the pandemic has been handled by various governments.
tasogare··on Divorce does funny things
Not only this but the cancer related statistics is oddly specific, and chose only because it put men in a bad light. Without numbers (count and percentage) caused by this plus the ventilation by sex it's totally meaningless: the affirmation could be true with only three divorces a year where two men leave and one woman does.

On the reverse, men being taken half of their wealth plus having a pension to pay is the overwhelming majority of cases (even when both are working) in the majority of Western countries. And one never reads any story about a woman becoming homeless or killing herself after a divorce while those stories are numerous on the male side...

tasogare··on Return YouTube dislike count
It's a dislike button, the reverse of like button, so it's normal people use it for content they dislike, including political content.

tasogare··on Making life easier for newcomers to the .NET ecosystem
Argument better instead of dumb personal attack. I've used/tried a bunch of languages: C, Erlang, F#, PHP, C++, Java, JavaScript, OCaml and Ruby and all had more steps to create and run an executable. Only PHP and JavaScript are simpler if and only if not using any framework.
tasogare··on Making life easier for newcomers to the .NET ecosystem
Visual Studio. Always has been. And the base class library of .net.
tasogare··on Making life easier for newcomers to the .NET ecosystem
Barrier never has been lower: downloading the SDK, creating a folder, running dotnet new console, then dotnet run. Editing Program.cs then back at dotnet run. I don't know of any language where it's as easy to get started. Also VS Code has a semi-decent support of C#.
tasogare··on Why did modern humans take so long to settle in Europe?
If wonder if Neanderthals discussed an idea akin to the great replacement and if most of them thought/argued that was a conspiracy theory.

97.91% of US citizens have immigrant ancestors, if that's not championing immigration nothing is.

tasogare··on Debit cards are hidden financial infrastructure
What? That seems totally backwards. Don't spend money you don't have, which mean using debit. Credit is useful for the single use case of buying a house.
tasogare··on Show HN: Cedille, the largest French language model, released in open source
Right, especially since what's considered "toxic" is a moving needle (that quote of the General de Gaulle that Zemmour like to use for instance was perfectly fine at the time it was said and still is for a lot of people) and is also not uniform across the world. In particular sexual jokes or double entendre are perfectly fine in French most of time while they're often considered harassment in the US culture.
tasogare··on .NET 6 Released
I'm developing with .NET for a decade and I can understand and explain the difference. The trick is too read about it from time to time: miss a few years and there is a lot to catch up. I can see how it can be a nightmare for beginners or people not following closely.
tasogare··on .NET 6 Released
XAML is good. It's very easy to build interface by nesting components then styling it if needed, and doing data binding. All the web alternatives are harder to use and came 10-20 years later.
tasogare··on The decline of unfettered research (1995)
That's hitting close to home. I'm near end my funding and visa time, with not enough publications. The three years have been mostly being told no to whatever I proposed and not given worthwhile stuff to do instead. And when it did it was things already done 3-4 decades ago. My advisor even told me the other day things that made it clear he was aware of the kind of stuffs I want to incorporate in my work, yet didn't seek any middle ground.

On the other side I have multiple projects, the biggest one already presented in a conference. I meet multiple people my university and other big ones that are very enthusiastic about either that project or the official one (which got none in my own lab) so it's not like what I'm doing was totally dumb.

I'm not sure what to do now. I have 3 more years to write the thesis, but would need to find a job to stay in the country. Hopefully I used web technologies I can market on my CV but I'm bit sour about the whole thing (and life in general).

We like to discuss the gap between university and enterprise but for once both a totally (ironically) aligned: interviews in big companies are like this, with a whiteboard instead of a sheet of paper.

tasogare··on HN post inspired me to quit my job and found my own startup
At $600+ the prestation it has to be perfect grammar wise, especially for a service focusing on text. I was also annoyed by the wrong use of kahuna and begs the question and I'm not even a native speaker of English.
tasogare··on Show HN: My wife is pregnant; naturally I made a baby-name app to prepare

tasogare··on China says it will hold supporters of Taiwan's independence responsible for life
Taiwan is considered independent by the vast majority of countries, who are doing business with it and having totally normally diplomatic relationships with it. The only caveat is Taiwan embassies are called bullshit and those countries will pretend not having diplomatic with it. But this is theater only and for 99% of things that matter Taiwan is considered a country.

Let's take an example: passports. France is one of the country pretending Taiwan isn't independent while letting Taiwanese people enter its borders with a Taiwanese passport. Since when people can move around with passports from an not independent country? Other example: academic scholarships for foreigners in Japan. China and Taiwan are separated and treated vastly different things. Also money changing: I didn't had any issue changing from and to NTD the last I went to a change bureau in KIX airport. How all of this is this possible if Taiwan is not, in fact, recognized as a country?

tasogare··on Nicholas Carr on how to fix social media
> Then again I don't make violent threats, spread misinformation, use racist language, or harass people.

You didn't did it yet. All of those are moving targets, and moving extremely fast especially in the US. I could say a dozen of totally non controversial statements in my country of residence (Japan), half of which being controversial or labeled some kind of -ist in my own country (France) and all of them warranting me cancellation in the US. At this rate what you are writing now will be categorized racist, threatening or harassing in a few years or so. Even your nickname could already be considered some kind of harassment as it single out kids born out of wedlock and is thus enforcing "the patriarchy". (Think it's far-fetched? Have a look at GitHub renaming the master branch)

> Maybe CLI, GUI with mouse or touch screens are all not the ideal interfaces at all, maybe the kid will imagine something else altogether, who knows. Why limit their perspective into a box?

Typical constructivist approach. As if a 2yo who can't speak, read or write will beat dozens of highly specialized researchers with access to funding on revolutionizing the field...

tasogare··on If Silence Is the Cost of Great Ramen, So Be It
Because otherwise big pharma couldn't get richer and politicians pushing it wouldn't get their commission, which is more important than the lifes of catt...citizens.

Political actions like forbidding hospital access to unvaccinated people in France showed long time ago that the purpose of vaccine mandates is not health related.
