tartuffe78··on Using 2 Editors Because Xcode Is Dumb
PSA: Turning off the "Enable Source Control" feature has always been a must for me to get decent performance out of Xcode.
tartuffe78··on Ask HN: Organize local communities without Facebook?
This is not my experience living in a small (~5,000) city , Facebook is where everything, farmer's markets, fairs and festivals, and other community events are announced and organized.
tartuffe78··on TikTok says it is restoring service for U.S. users
Did they poll AIPAC?
tartuffe78··on TikTok says it is restoring service for U.S. users
Have you used it?
tartuffe78··on Let's Quit X
Well it probably won't promote people paying for blue checkmarks into my feed.
tartuffe78··on GPT-5 is behind schedule
Wonder if OpenAI is considering building a search engine for this reason... Imagine if we get a functional search engine again from some company just trying to feeding their model generation...
tartuffe78··on ICC issues warrants for Netanyahu, Gallant, and Hamas officials
Might be because we're funding this genocide ourselves...
tartuffe78··on Twitter is the worst global social network–except for all the others
Since the election ramped up I see lots of blue checkmarks calling people fggt, anecdotally but it's part of the reason I'm spending more time on Bluesky.
tartuffe78··on Twitter is the worst global social network except for all the others
It's the only one I'm on where I see people called slurs all the time.
tartuffe78··on Learning not to trust the All-In podcast
You do have the right for better or worse.
tartuffe78··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Regular businesses didn’t either, my company got one but actually voluntarily did pay it back
tartuffe78··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Did you vote in this election?
tartuffe78··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Trump doesn’t really laugh much, it’s a bit odd when you noticed it.
tartuffe78··on Bank of America raises minimum hourly pay
...from $23
tartuffe78··on SwiftUI for Mac 2024
Agreed, every time I open AS to update my company's Android apps (infrequently) I have to spend an hour Googling odd Java memory errors and grade sync complaints before I can do the minor tweaks I need to do to the actual app.
tartuffe78··on What Happens When Ozempic Takes over Your Town
I was wondering if there really are no negative long term side effects, could this finally lead to universal healthcare in the US? It seems like a lot of our costs (aside from the obvious medical industrial complex skimming massive profits) comes from health complications related to our obesity epidemic.
tartuffe78··on Ask HN: What's the weirdest bug you ever had?
We were developing an Android multimedia application in the bad old 2.x days, and our QA person was running into a crash recording with the camera in our app.

She walked over to my desk to show me, and the crash wouldn't happen anymore. Went back to her desk and was able to reproduce it again, walked back to my desk and suddenly it wouldn't happen anymore.

After a bit of this, I finally brought my laptop over to her desk and discovered it was an out of memory error issue. She sat by the window, and with more sunlight at her desk she was getting higher frames per second from the camera, whereas in my dark corner the camera was recording way fewer frames and using less memory.

tartuffe78··on Gen AI will increase demand for software engineers
I've worked as a developer with developers for 10+ years, and I sure as hell don't always recognize when they start doing something funny... Not sure I'd be able to keep up with monitoring thousands of lines of generated code beyond simple boiler plate stuff.
tartuffe78··on Vision Pro: What we got wrong at Oculus that Apple got right
I doubt it's very common at all, most people just Facebook without putting much thought into it I imagine.
tartuffe78··on Apple Vision Pro's components cost $1,542–but that's not the full story
These comments will probably be quite amusing in 3-4 years time.
tartuffe78··on OpenAI drops ban on military tools to partner with The Pentagon
"They are not weapons, they are enhanced tools for war."
tartuffe78··on The FTC sues to break up Amazon over an economy-wide “hidden tax”
They're obligated to by the grip Amazon already has on the e-commerce market. Letting Amazon make anti-competitive moves that increase their grip will only worsen the situation.
tartuffe78··on The FTC sues to break up Amazon over an economy-wide “hidden tax”
Amazon is abusing it's monopoly power to hurt competition, when Amazon is the only place to certain things, consumer cost will go up.
tartuffe78··on The elderly are becoming homeless at a rate not seen since the Great Depression
You're assuming he has a house. Apartments, especially ones with roommates don't just let you bring in extra people.
tartuffe78··on Tech Workers Deserve a Union: An Interview with Ethan Marcotte
With a few notable outliers...
tartuffe78··on Judge tears apart Republican lawsuit alleging bias in Gmail spam filter
There is one scam that is "Donate for a chance to have dinner with Trump at Mar-a-Lago, all expenses paid!" that a family member falls for. As far as I know they've donated tens of thousands of dollars, their phone rings off the hook, must be a big fish for this type of scam.
tartuffe78··on Leave no trace: Finland removes litter bins from national parks
It's a good thing Finland isn't full of New Yorkers!
tartuffe78··on Excess Death Rates for Registered Voters in Florida and Ohio
Existing voters get older, and presumably more susceptible to misinformation and scaremongering, every year.
tartuffe78··on Remembering GitHub's Office, a Monument to Tech Culture
Working for a software company in the midwest I feel no shame. Maybe it's different on the west coast with gentrification and the bad reputation of certain FAANG companies at the moment. At the end of the day it's just a job, as long as I'm not working in the defense industry I'm not losing sleep over it.
tartuffe78··on 401(k) Hardship Withdrawals Tick Up as Inflation Stays High
Assuming your kids enjoy living this exact lifestyle, and don't end up leaving, big assumption.
