tartoran··on Oil companies report sky-high profits thanks to wartime crude prices
People will not elect them but they will nonetheless win the elections. This is disheartening indeed..
tartoran··on Oil companies report sky-high profits thanks to wartime crude prices
I doubt they'll do any time at all.
tartoran··on Gemini Robotics 2 brings whole body intelligence to robots
You think robots can't malfunction or be hacked to do some nefarious things in the household?
tartoran··on Gemini Robotics 2 brings whole body intelligence to robots
We'll probably get there in some shape or from but I agree, we're absolutely not there yet. I don't see humanoid robots normalized in households anytime soon but at the same time they'll probably be a thing outside the home.
tartoran··on The lost civic life of movie rental stores
> more romanticizing of the bygone era. late fees (due at midnight!), restocking fees, etc; some of these fees to the tune of a new dvd/vhs; good riddance

Well, they were a business after all. And what's being romanticised is the civic experience of that bygone era. The modern experience sucks. It is devoid of any real human interaction. That is highly missing part in the modern landscape and it will only get worse.

tartoran··on The lost civic life of movie rental stores
I think it's great for kids to grow up amongst books. As for the homeless, it's fine if they don't stink and use the library for what it is, a place to read books or possibly go online. Any other behavior should not be tolerated.
tartoran··on Why DNA damage from smoking and UV rays cause cancer in some but not others
Yes, genetics play a big part but my understanding that cancer is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. It's possible to have similar habits in the family with respect to sun exposure, alcohol consumtion, diets etc..
tartoran··on Why DNA damage from smoking and UV rays cause cancer in some but not others
That's only if you don't have a lot of time out. If you're planning to be out for a while I'd avoid being too exposed during the 12-3 window.
tartoran··on Apple's hostile App Store rating system
The platform does have skin in the game and it's also making a lot of money off the app store. Just saying...
tartoran··on The Three-Second Theft: Why AI Voice Fraud Outruns Every Defence
Why not fine vendors instead? They'll quickly change the tune..
tartoran··on Why I Left Google DeepMind
Not only that but an AI could follow any orders it is given (whether it hallucinates that's a different story) whereas humans may oppose. The friction of orders having to go through a chain of command through its completion is a feature not a bug and that adds responsibility. AI can take no responsibility by itself and with 'moving fast break things smart weapons' that responsibility can be further shoved under the rug.
tartoran··on My midlife crisis Corolla is fast, furious, and modded
The drivers of such cars want to draw attention to themselves. But I wish your solution would psychologically trick some of them at least. I sometimes catch myself holding my breath when one of these passes by and it is still very distressing even if I temporarily plug my years with my fingers.
tartoran··on Turn your singing voice into printable notes (in the browser)
Please do. My kid has been messing with it but seems to be getting some notes wrong. Im sure some tweaking will make it behave correctly and I'd appreciate it.
tartoran··on AI-generated videos to maximally drive a target brain region
I suspect OP was referring to not only working for these platforms but also creating content or even consuming it.
tartoran··on Star Just Ate a Planet, and It's Not Done Yet
Things can be meaningless on a cosmic timescale and still matter a great deal on a human one. Most of us will never influence the universe, but we'll influence our families, friends, coworkers and even future generations, that's enough...
tartoran··on EU Parliament greenlights Chat Control 1.0
But the populism doesn't address the issues either and and their incoherent points will make things worse. Just look at the US for example.
tartoran··on EU Parliament greenlights Chat Control 1.0
Right wing populism is growing in EU as well. That is also sponsored by Russia but also by Trump/Vance etc..
tartoran··on Solid and Clean Code never felt solid or clean to me
I tend to agree with this take. If you do something wrong at least doing it consistently will be more valuable than not. Unfortunately dogma is not easy to avoid. Even it wasn't for Bob's Clean Code, some other guy would distill some patterns, market another book with a catchy title that'd be inevitably somewhat misunderstood and misused.
tartoran··on Sony Deletes 551 Movies PlayStation Owners Paid For
Why would anyone call you a luddite for advocating for MicroSDs? Of course the reason SD were pushed away (at least for Apple) was to offer cloud backup as the only option with no alternatives.

tartoran··on One million passports leaked online
> Note what happened. A high-value credential—a passport—was used in an ancillary low-value authentication system: ID verification for cannabis dispensaries. And it’s the low-value system that got hacked, putting the high-value credential at risk.

Why do these systems hold onto user's data post verification?

tartoran··on Texas man sentenced to 30 years for transporting pamphlets
I don't think they're necessarily afraid of what's in those pamphlets. I think they're trying to make people afraid to dissent, and I have to say they're having some success at it.
tartoran··on Texas man sentenced to 30 years for transporting pamphlets
What difference does it make? The point being that nobody should be sentenced for transporting pamphlets, regardless of what's in them. And the 30 year sentence? This is absurd.
tartoran··on Cyberdecks, going analog, and convivial technology
I got a ClockworkPi uConsole and am not really using it much, and that’s because it’s become very hard for me to read on the high dpi small screen for too long.
tartoran··on Help I accidentally a wigglegram
Thanks. I missed that meme
tartoran··on Help I accidentally a wigglegram
Yeah, that irked me a bit but maybe it was intentional?
tartoran··on Codex logging bug may write TBs to local SSDs
Yes, it’s very characteristic of gen-AI era.
tartoran··on Codex logging bug may write TBs to local SSDs
If they respected their users they’d at least pin some versions that are more stable.
tartoran··on Identity verification on Claude
You risk being silenly flagged and get nerfed responses. Somehting like shadow dumbed down.
