taosx··on An answer to: why is Nvidia making GPUs bigger when games don't need them?
Here is a video from Linus that poses that question. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OX31kZbAXsA
taosx··on Web Scraping with Python
Just don't forget to optimize it for writes (WAL-mode...etc) when having lots of sources.
taosx··on Web Scraping with Python
Agreed (especially on the devops overhead), some options to lower the bandwidth usage using request blocking: - block ads - blocks videos, images - css stylesheets

In the past I've built scraper infrastructure (headless pools, credential stores, proxy managers, agent profiles) and managed to get a pretty efficient service by tracking cpu, memory, network usage per each job and writing specialized versions. I got pretty far trying to automatically generate specialized scrapers from previous requests but I moved to other projects.

Scraping becomes boring really fast if you don't use the data in meaningful ways.

taosx··on You can create a great looking website while sucking at design
Don't sell yourself short. The only reason that should keep you back from designing something great is that it doesn't make sense as you haven't optimised for that.

I can create great designs, I can write great code and I can solve difficult problems in any domain, the issue is that some of those things would take more time that someone who specifically trained be able to do that thing in a reasonable amount of time.

taosx··on A single memory is stored across many connected brain regions
The value and information of @IIAOPSW comment is just gold when you compare it to the primary one. The delivery brings additional value corresponding to the absurdity of the post.
taosx··on How Intelligent Are Cats? (2004)
I don't know about Intelligent but I had a cat that was bringing me mice every so often in the morning and was knocking the door for like 10 minutes with her back leg!

The first time I got scared cause I didn't want the mouse to get in the house and I didn't know who was knocking on the door but I think it was half-dead...oh yeah I forgot to mention that all the mice were still alive.

I'll never understand that behavior..she was well fed.

taosx··on Ask HN: How to improve as a struggling junior software engineer?
This post and all the comments made me realize that in the past I was a bit too hard on juniors, I was always helping and reaching to them but I gave them tasks that may have taken some after-hour work for research.

I think it's because I've also had a rough start and no help from the toxic senior on the team (until that guy left) and now me a junior with ~6 months experience was leading the project but I was overworked and underpaid for some time.

The most important thing that I want from anyone is transparency, I would totally make that one of the pillars of any big organization.

taosx··on Ask HN: How to improve as a struggling junior software engineer?
And of course the manager or whoever is replacing him. But as people have said I don't know how a junior could delay the project by a month in any sane company, isn't the code reviewed? Don't they have some kind of process for changes?
taosx··on The next Google
I too like many others feel that Google results have gone really bad in the last year which may be partially due to web pollution but the main issue is that I feel like google's search totally ignores my requests, a lot of times it even ignores exact matches using quotes.

If only we could get some sql-like powers in that simple input box. Maybe I'm not their target audience...who knows.

taosx··on Show HN: Warp, a Rust-based terminal
I believe that they can turn this around with more transparency going forward. I also see value in how it can help a tech company, being able to onboard people into specific workflows (dev,ops..etc) using a combination of docs and team capabilities.

I'm sure some people wouldn't like what I'm about to propose as it again "phones home" but I encourage the team to take a look at GPT models for converting text to commands, I have a simple fine-tuned model that does wonders when I'm in the terminal.

As for me at home, all I need are those sweet blocks with text-editing mode in any open source terminal.

taosx··on Nix: An idea whose time has come
I really like the idea of nix, especially for my servers in order to do provisioning and configuration..

Problems 1. Not working by default 2. Documentation is ...not ready 3. There are some versioning issues

[1] A week ago I tried to install the nix (the package manager) on my arch box using the recommended multi-user script and it screw up with permissions and ended up not working.

taosx··on A proposal for adding a pipe operator to JavaScript
IMO pipe operators wouldn't bring a big improvement from looking at the examples, some are becoming harder to read for me and I think temp vars would clean them more, in any case I would probably use them as they make code fun in some places.

It would be nice to see more functional features, similar to async/await, template literals and lambdas. Some things that I think would be interesting are optional type hinting (native), exhaustive pattern matching.

taosx··on Fastly Outage
I̶n̶ ̶r̶o̶m̶a̶n̶i̶a̶ ̶e̶v̶e̶r̶y̶t̶h̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶s̶e̶e̶m̶s̶ ̶b̶a̶c̶k̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶n̶o̶r̶m̶a̶l̶.̶.̶.̶?̶

Edit: nope, just worked for 2-3 requests (10 secs)

taosx··on Do you really want Linux phones
I don't own a linux phone yet but from the last reviews I would buy one immediately if it had last generation hardware + hardware acceleration. (don't even need a camera or other gizmos).
taosx··on Developer progression as a function of navigating complexity
The one with the most domain knowledge and technical excellence leads? thus Lead Senior Developer.
taosx··on From Rust to TypeScript
I resonated with the post as I'm in a similar position but I'm really sad that typescript chose just to be a thin layer on top of javascript.

The sentiment mostly comes from having the JS ecosystem mostly being untyped and having to interact with it.

That being said I tried io-ts but found it undocumented, missing examples and hard to write. For future libraries/projects I'm looking to try again ReasonML, tried in the past but had to write too many bindings.

taosx··on Understanding OAuth2 and OpenID Connect
I'm building a suite of services around automotive. Due to legislation and types of consumers they're separate (different domain/branding), so SSO.

Just dropped my job in order to catch up with everything I wanted to learn and what better way than to build a business.

Currently I'm a bit (1 month) behind the schedule cause I complicated everything in order to learn k8s, rust, web assembly, svelte/sapper...so much fun, on the other side I burned through my finances a little too fast so I might need a job soon.

taosx··on Understanding OAuth2 and OpenID Connect
Even through Keycloak is more mature than ORY ecosystem I went with the latter as I have more experience with Go than Java. I'm only writing integration, dashboard. When those thing are ready I'm going to open source and offer a free option until I add billing, at that point you can either go on-premise or just continue with us.

Ory will probably offer a cloud service in the near future but I'm just scratching an itch for now.

taosx··on Understanding OAuth2 and OpenID Connect
Open core..wouldn't that mean the core product being open source..from what I'm seeing on github only some components are open source. By that example I would also call auth0 open core.

Anyways, seems interesting.

taosx··on Understanding OAuth2 and OpenID Connect
I have wasted so much time on oAuth2 and OIDC the past month that I'm building a SaaS around it. (not wasted but took away time from the business)

I would have really liked to use auth0 or other authn services but not a fan of lock-in platforms, I want to export my db without enterprise plans.

The pricing model I'm thinking of is a pay per usage + a commission of the total usage per month.

Thank you @sjroot

taosx··on Ghost.org deleted my website
I can't say I agree with the actions of both the Author and the CEO. It wasn't the nicest thing to go on twitter bad-mouthing when you're using the service and still planning to do so, 7 days notice was enough (google, amazon cloud offering bite you instantly). It wasn't right to delete your account but from a business perspective I would also prefer to end it (not this way) with a bad customer early so I can focus on other things. I both provide and I'm a customer of different online services...so I get both perspectives but some customers are impossible (they want everything for free and are still not satisfied)
taosx··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
Building a custom engine for my blog/playground with hyped technologies (svelte, rust[api]/graphql, k8s).
taosx··on Moonjit – Fork of LuaJIT to Continue Development

taosx··on How Dark Deploys Code in 50ms
Marketing piece with grand plans...not really

I would argue with you that this is not such a priority for a software development organization, there are more important things to do.

You got so excited...so fast, I think this community may be doing more bad for me than good lately.

taosx··on Please don’t theme our apps
As an end user I never had any of the mentioned users. On some rare occasions when the state of my distro was probably too unique, I had some problems, but that's why I use linux.
taosx··on Kong raises $43M Series C for its API Gateway
I didn't know that, seems interesting. I will try it the first chance I get. Thank you
taosx··on Kong raises $43M Series C for its API Gateway
Happy for them. I know that Kong uses openResty with which I have worked and I hope some of that money goes into it.

On another topic, why would I use Kong instead of it's competitors built on envoy and with higher integration with kubernetes? Maturity?

taosx··on Show HN: Darkwire.io – instant encrypted web chat (Socket.io and Web Crypto API)
You could give the option to the owner of the room to set a password for anyone wanting to join. And maybe you could use the password to encrypt further communication.

I don't know why I don't have nautil.us bookmarked.
