Great to hear this.

> But it had side effects like feeling emotionally numb and lack of sexual desire Lot's of friends who are in Sertraline has this adverse effect.

> Though I haven’t ever even kissed a girl at 31 I don't know how successful you are at dating but even so I'll recommend you "The Book of Pook" and "Anti Dump's Machine". Are two funny books you can find online for free. Don't buy them because they are recollection of blog posts from sosuave. They helped me mature in that aspect and give some good advice.

> I will keep an eye for it and talk to my therapist to see if he can refer me to a clinic who can help me in a controlled environment.

Sounds great. Also be cautious, you shouldn't take MDMA while on a SSRI like Escitalopram.

> Thanks for your help.

You are welcome, no problem, it's glad to hear I helped in some way. :)

taopai··on Losing my son
I can't give medical advice, so I'll give none.

A user recommended the use of psychedelics, I wouldn't.

But try investigating recent literature regarding to MDMA and assisted therapy (with a professional) to treat and manage PTSD. If you are able to find a professional who is up to it, it could be something to consider. Is not a magic pill, but it can catalyze great results provided it's deeply integrated in therapy.

taopai··on Why I Like Obsidian
Just try it.

Also consider trying Emacs org mode.

I only had 3 experiences. All hard and profound.

They helped me appreciate sanity. Now when I get overwhelmed I smile and say "at least now I can think straight and I am not tortured by a infinity of laughing Homer Simpsons who doesn't go away of my field of vision."

Having the right mindset and believing you know how to ride drug highs without getting overwhelmed is very useful.

taopai··on The big alcohol study that didn't happen (2021)
Great comment. I agree. Dream journal can be pretty wild, after a couple of days I can remember like 5 dreams every night, until I have to stop because It's a lot and it's very intense. Pretty awesome.

I would also add hypnosis, self-hypnosis (or also known as non-deceptive mega-placebo). Can be awesome.

taopai··on The big alcohol study that didn't happen (2021)
I just did MDMA 3 times in my life with controlled dose and environment. I don't recommend drug use.

When I first tried it I just realized alcohol is not fun. In fact is a shitty drug. We think we are having a good time because everybody drinks, and that's what you do, and it's so tied to our social life. But If we hang out more, and didn't used like a social crutch we'll surely have the same or more fun.

Lately I found that coffee make's me much more fun than some beers, I am very sensitive to coffee. I have a BLAST, and also people around me, while with +4 beers I laugh a little but I become kind of numbed, lazy funny, as I say.

I hope this is not off topic. But when talking about alcohol I think that the problem is how it's seen socially.

taopai··on Inner Speech
Have you tried to change the tone in your inner voice?

Like talking more energetically and happy or using your favorite voice actor? It's pretty awesome.

If you have good imaginary you can combine it with epic music and a hall full of people cheering.

I found it in this small free epub, just 5 pages. I can't find it right now, but here it is in html.

Good old forums.

I am lucky I found one in my own language recently. We are a small community, like 250 active users. Most of it is joking, having a blast, and insulting. It's very funny.

For me forums are the best of internet. I don't consider reddit a forum because it has an opaque algorithm. Hackernews is great, but it's threads are very short lived, and it's to big to be a functional traditional forum.

taopai··on Emacs commands I got by with for years
I usually use:

C-h f runs the command describe-function (found in global-map)

If the command is bound it has "It is bound to..."

taopai··on Emacs commands I got by with for years
Yes exactly, this is the magic of Emacs, you customize it to your needs and liking.

Also witting your own elisp functions to manage buffers and have it mapped to some keys and commands opens a infinite dimension. For me it's like the holy grail of software, at least text based.

taopai··on Emacs commands I got by with for years
You don't use bookmarks?

C-x r b runs the command bookmark-jump

C-x r m runs the command bookmark-set

> I tried learning a few commands but forgot them after a while.

C-h k runs the command describe-key. You do this and after that any command, and it will give you the explanation.

I've been using emacs only a year. I played a lot with it the first months and it was heavy, but if you take it like a game the benefits are immense.

Also defining your own keys tied to elisp functions or even running python scripts or bash scripts called from eslip and tied to keys is awesome.

For example things that i did: - Open, close bluetooth to conect/disconect headphones. - Open desktop gui folder of current buffer. - Insert custom org templates and such.

I encourage you to take some time every week to play with emacs. Be cautious not to fall down the rabbit hole, but you can gain a lot by learning just the basics.

pd: when learning a new command take it REALLY slow, and push the keys deliberately, this will make you learn faster, like playing the piano.

taopai··on Think more about what to focus on
Your comment made me read the intro. Good book, I read a lot of self help books and this seems to be a quality one.

Easy to read, dynamic but not story dense. I'll keep reading it. Thank you for recommending it.

Thank you a lot.
taopai··on Writing books remains a tough way to make a living
It makes sense.

Do you have any advice to someone who would start writing fiction books?

I write a lot but only for myself. I don't care about money but I would like to persevere to some day be able to produce quality works in my own language.

taopai··on Writing books remains a tough way to make a living
I read some reddit's post regarding to this topic.

The main takeaway was that living, or higher profits came only if you were being aggressive with ads.

Something like reinvesting 50% of the profits in digital ads (google, amazon).

If your book reaches near top #1, you've done it. Now I realized that most of the books I read published on XXI century had been very popular, top of the chart books in some genre, during some years and I found them trough reddit/forums recommendations. Books that you would still find regarded as best in Amazon.

Internet it's pushing Pareto principle to an extreme. The same goes for music, digital art, cinema, teaching, etc. Small artists are sheltering themselves in services like Patreon because they beat the giants in terms of selling.

Also I think people are reading less. My friends don't read. They pay +15/30 USD a month to Netflix and other services. That's money and time "taken away" from reading, books.

> middle class white women

Sachachua enters this category. I am sure she would be glad to read your book.

pd: sacha if you read this, no offense, just joking, hahahaha

taopai··on How to forget what you read
Books are awesome. Really.

But reading is the first step. You never learn only by reading. You have to relate the ideas with your prior knowledge and practice it or apply it somewhere.

You also have to get a nice book. And have to practice reading. Reading is a skill, it's an extension of imagination. You have to practice that, and reading is an awesome way.

taopai··on How to forget what you read
I used to take endless notes on .org documents and build myself small wiki sites in django...

You know what makes the difference?

Take a walk, or catch a train and think about what you read. Find the main ideas and how the material relates to yourself. Play with it and ask yourself questions about it.

Then next day try to answer them in paper without extra material. And only after that reread the book to check or find unsolved the answers.

Learning is hard. There is nothing as easy learning. The good news is that it can be hand AND fun.

About reading:

Engage in every sentence, ask yourself what the writer is trying to tell you in every sentence, after that translate it to imagination and relate it with yourself and what you already know.

There is shallow reading and deep reading. Deep reading is a must for technical books, but also a joy for fiction. I still remember so vividly the coldness and texture of the walls of the hobbit's first mountain tunnels despite haven't been told about it.

taopai··on Things software developers should learn about learning
Dual coding.

The material should present in multiple ways.

Visually AND verbally is preferred.

taopai··on Tell HN: Merry Christmas
Sometimes I hope HN would have a forum, a real old forum, about life itself, not only tech.

It would be amazing to have such a high quality community able to contribute to everlasting threads. About life, decisions, and of course, curiosity.

P.S: Merry Christmas!

taopai··on Concept sliders: LoRA adaptors for precise control in diffusion models
Great response.

I would also add that art is also "created" when you consume it. When we consume it, we generate some interpretation, feelings or imagery. This is the last step. That's internal, but this processing of art is also art.

That explain why some people find something as art and others as BS. As you say it's about intention and context, from the artist point of view and also from the consumer.

taopai··on Google's advanced music generation model and two new AI experiments
I am not justifying this.

But that's how life works. Someone invents something. Some people love it and others hate it.

It's like forums. There ara people who hate forums and prefer good old books. There are people who hate books and love forums. There ara people who love both

Some people like watching plays. Others like cinema. And some play videogames.

But be sure this will hurt professional musicians. Not pop musicians, I mean professional musicians that earn a humble living.

taopai··on Google's advanced music generation model and two new AI experiments
Well, this could have the potential to make infinite covers of your favorite song.

But think about it, people used to watch the same movies in DVD. The movies they loved. Now people watch and infinity of short random videos (tik tok, instagram)...

Technology changes the habits of people, specially in young people. Think about it, one friend sends a song auto-generated from some text, it is "a song made by someone", at least that will be their perception...

taopai··on Google's advanced music generation model and two new AI experiments
I guess someone will make it, if not google or others will.

This is the next iteration of music. First we had only live concerts, then we had recordings, and finally auto-generated music.

I hope some old dudes with long beards will like to hang out and jam with me when I'll be old.
