tantalum··on What are your plans for when Software Engineering is no longer a viable career?
To evolve with the industry. I don't think Software Engineering will disappear, I think it will evolve. An engineers day-to-day job will be different, the job requirements will change, the skillset that is needed to be successful will change, but we will still need to develop software and we will need engineers to do it.
tantalum··on Our approach to advertising
Not to long and we are going to start seeing LTO (LLM Training Optimization) become the new SEO.
tantalum··on Where are engineers looking for jobs?
Generally when I am seriously looking for a jobs, I look in multiple places not just one.

I look within my direct network: Do I know any companies that are heiring that I have contacts at? Are any of my associates/friends/former colleagues posting job openings?

I look at places I would love to work: Make a list of companies that you would like to work for, then go to their job boards and see if there is anything that interests you. Make a list of fields you would like to work in (Security, bio infromatics, whatever), get a list of companies in that field, and scour their job boards.

Finally, the usual job-posting aggregators like Indeed and friends.

I will say that with my last job search I also worked with a recruiter. This was a very positive experience. I got lucky with my recruiter and she was very helpful finding positions and getting me an edge when applying.

tantalum··on Ask HN: What VPN service are you currently using?
I don't know what your needs are, but for me I needed a VPN for when I was using public networks at conferences and airports.

I've simply setup OpenVPN on a little server I have sitting in my house. It's been very reliable and simple to manage and has covered my needs.

tantalum··on Small Introduction to Markov Chains
Thanks for pointing that out. I'll update the stylesheets.
tantalum··on Small Introduction to Markov Chains
Yes there are more complex probabilities that you can calculate. For example you can calculate the probability of reaching some state that is one or more transitions away given a starting state. You can find more info on some of other calculations you can do on Wikipedia.

Abnormal really means that it has a probability less than some threshold. So you might have a transition that has a probability of less then 0.1, depending on your situation, you might consider that abnormal even thought that transition does exist. Also a non existent transition would be considered "abnormal" because the probability is 0 in your model.

I've been thinking about doing a part 2 with text analysis and a cool use case would be to detect "abnormal" text from an author because he/she uses strings of words that have a low probability in the rest of their text.

Hope this helps and I'm glad you like the post.
