tanseydavid··on I Owe My Life to the Commodore 64
I am curious how many of you other C64 greybeards got exposed to a language called COMAL (not a typo) on the C64 back in the day?
tanseydavid··on Evidence of inconsistencies in evaluation process and selection of winners
> making strategic decisions after snorting a long line of social-media-psychosis and TED talks

I would give you +100 for that if I could.

Very well-played (and worded). I think I'm going to steal that one.

tanseydavid··on I Owe My Life to the Commodore 64
I wanted an Apple II so badly and thought I was getting the short-end-of-the-stick with a C64 but I am so happy (to this day) that my first machine at home was C64.

I still have my tattered C64 Programmer's Reference Guide on my shelf (as well as Programming the 6502 by Rodnay Zaks).

tanseydavid··on Why is healthcare so much slower than IT?
Because if healthcare makes a big mistake, they cannot ship a hotfix update to bring a person back to life?
tanseydavid··on The Last Picture Show: A Conversation with George Lucas
Starring a very young and beautiful Cybill Shepherd as well as Timothy Bottoms, Jeff Bridges, Ellen Burstyn, Ben Johnson, Cloris Leachman, Eileen Brennan, and Randy Quaid.
tanseydavid··on California authorizes its DMV to join a national ID database
Well I guess that's the end of getting a warning instead of ticket when driving a rental car in another US state from the one I live in.
tanseydavid··on NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook
Wow that very long series of pivots in the same messaging space is eye-opening and disheartening. It is hard to believe. Thank you for sharing that.
tanseydavid··on NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook
Got burned by this when I was wanting to uninstall MS Office from my laptop recently.

Filtering with string "office" turned up nothing in the list of installed programs but it was clear that "MS Office Click-to-Run SxS" was regularly grinding away chewing lots of CPU. So I was not crazy -- Office was installed.

The names of the "installed program" for MS Office is now Microsoft 365. Brilliant value add on that one </sarc>

tanseydavid··on DEA to Temporarily Schedule 7-Oh and Related Substances to Protect Public Safety
I will guess that you are not in SF where the War on Drugs is on a cease-fire.
tanseydavid··on Richard Feynman and the Connection Machine (1989)
Feynman is my notion of what a "Chad" really is.
tanseydavid··on Codex Micro
How long before someone shows a hobby project with a robotic arm and computer vision controlling one of these?

I am only half-joking.

tanseydavid··on What did SFFA vs. Harvard reveal about admissions?
> Where else in our society do we justify imposing a moral wrong on a specific individual

> If you help someone, you are punishing the entire world?

You are missing (or maybe even ignoring) the huge difference between these two viewpoints.

tanseydavid··on Sam Neill has died
Emphatic "SECOND" to this recommendation. This is a very enjoyable and touching film.
tanseydavid··on Death of the Status Update: Why 55% of Americans Stopped Posting on Social Media
>> but not everything ought to be an always on chatterbox

Nothing deserves to an "always-on-chatterbox" unless the end-user truly chooses it because that is what they want or need.

This is part of the larger problem. How many "always-on-chatterboxes" competing for one's attention before it becomes close-to-impossible to concentrate on anything that requires some actual thinking.

tanseydavid··on Death of the Status Update: Why 55% of Americans Stopped Posting on Social Media
> No one cares about the actual choice, only that it is made.

If the actual choice requires me to install an app then I care quite a lot and will probably decline to join in.

I don't think that I am the only one who feels this way.

tanseydavid··on Mystery behind Moana: After 1,700 years, why did Polynesians suddenly sail east?
> Some people obviously just got really into the idea of sailing to the islands.

Not to be argumentative, but why would we think that the Polynesians knew that Hawaii (as one example) was out there in the middle of the vast Pacific.

Whereas we know Mars exists and we know how to find it if we want to try to go there.

Perhaps they just were willing to gamble that surely there must be other islands out there like the ones they were inhabiting.

tanseydavid··on Apple sues OpenAI, accuses ex-employees of stealing trade secrets
If you leave your house unlocked and someone steals your stuff AND is never caught, you're SOL.
tanseydavid··on Ask HN: Do we need a support group for developers alienated by LLMs?
Thanks for stopping by to leave 4 separate, scathing, contempt-filled comments.

So I guess it is safe to assume that you would not be interested in a "a support group for developers alienated by LLMs?"

Yes, that is a rhetorical question.

tanseydavid··on Ask HN: Do we need a support group for developers alienated by LLMs?
Can you find one? Can you hire them? It is basically a "snipe-hunt".
tanseydavid··on Bonnie Tyler has died
The heads on 8-track players would move physically to access the 4 pairs of stereo and inevitably would mis-track as they aged.

This was more awful than just the marginal fidelity of a perfectly aligned 8-track machine.

tanseydavid··on OpenAI faked inability to search training data, hid billions of logs, NYT says
SAMA will Sam.
tanseydavid··on EU Parliament greenlights Chat Control 1.0
> Honestly where do you even go if you want to get out from under this?

Mars is nice this time of year.

tanseydavid··on I think I have LLM burnout
> He who brings the slop cannon shall be drowned by slop rain.

If this approach gets widely adopted, then I think you should probably start building an ARK.

Make it big enough to hold two of every animal species. /s

tanseydavid··on Alleged Operators of HiAnime Piracy Ring Arrested in Vietnam with U.S. Support
Your comment could be interpreted different ways but I have to assume you meant: * Lower 90% gets prosecuted * Upper 10% gets a free-pass
tanseydavid··on Anthropic wants to develop its own drugs
Scope creep. No thanks. Get a partner that is already in Pharma.
tanseydavid··on Vaclav Havel, the Power of the Powerless (1978)
In landscape on an iPhone it is very readable. In portrait, not so much as you have pointed out.
tanseydavid··on U.S. officials believed Israel was plotting to kill Iranian negotiators
Every time I see a photo of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran, Abbas Araghchi, I instantly think I am looking at a picture of author Nicholas Nassim Talib (Black Swan, Fooled by Randomness).

Am I the only one?
