tanjtanjtanj··on The weekend is 100 years old
That's not quite right (other than the electronic part obviously). There were traveling coach shows, dance and performance halls, and at a minimum week-long performance events (religious ones too) before anyone here on earth was alive.
tanjtanjtanj··on Microsoft builds MacBook Pro rival with NVIDIA-powered Surface Laptop Ultra
The last time I called Apple the phone service employee hit me with “I understand your issue as I am also a student” when I replied that I wasn’t a student he then followed it up with “Oh, neither am I”

A couple anecdotes from me:

A (quite large) company that I worked for stopped offering surfaces to employees after the average lifetime over the 3 years they offered them was under 1 year. We even had a terrible batch of Dells at the same time that still handily outlived the surfaces.

Small sample size (N=3) but, nobody I know that works at Microsoft uses a surface or any other Microsoft branded laptop.

tanjtanjtanj··on Intuit to lay off over 3k employees to refocus on AI
Your experience is way different from mine.

I had some very basic "double check" type questions about my very straightforward taxes I threw at the bot because it was handy and it didn't seem to know that it was even related to taxes or tax software and literally directed me to seek out someone who might know about taxes. I then asked it about the weather and it was able to talk freely about that, just seems like they're reselling another model with a different prompt up front or a RAG.

Ah, I have I guess an old version of the CR downloaded from when I was a judge and TO where rule section 722 is "Controlling Another Player," weird reorganization there.

Are you active in judge forums or social media at all? Huge threads on prepared with these arguments (I didn't come up with the idea as I now longer play or judge).

Regardless of whether you think this one example is confusing, WOTC came out a few years back and said they were sacrificing clarity for more natural language as a development goal and it's clearly noticeable in the cards.

Sorry, throwing out a text because its reminder text is a cop-out, that's the only way 99%+ of players are going to interact with the rules. The rule makes sense when demonstrated but from a logical step-by-step when following what it says on the actual cards it does not actually function in a way that conforms to the way it is supposed to work.

Well there was a huge discussion on what it means amongst judges. On plain reading it does not do what it states it does. Start just with the phrase "its spell" - those words are entirely undefined until getting into the rulings, and don't mean what they mean in other contexts. It makes no mention of the prior rules that it sort of hacks into this either.

I have no idea what rule 722 has to do with prepared.

tanjtanjtanj··on United Wizards of the Coast
There was an era about 10-15 years long where that was true but modern cards often fall back on very loose language that they tighten up with rulings prior or sometimes after release. See the language behind the "Prepared" key word in the newest set for a striking example.
tanjtanjtanj··on Not buying another Kindle
The kobo store has problems with DRM but Kobo devices do not. they’ll open whatever you put on the file system (and it’s treated as a first class citizen along with anything you’ve bought from them). They also are extremely easy to install custom firmware on.
tanjtanjtanj··on We haven't seen the worst of what gambling and prediction markets will do
Really? Because he invented the gambling part of MTG - booster packs and then introduced drafting to get people to crack even more.

He’s not full time (or even part time) on MTG these days but he is often called in as a consultant.

tanjtanjtanj··on Woman who never stopped updating her lost dog's chip reunites with him after 11y
The reason they have the “nanny dog reputation” is because a breeder made it up in the 1970s and then it caught on through shares and likes through Facebook in the late 2010s.

There is no historical basis for the contents of what was basically a chain letter.

tanjtanjtanj··on Woman who never stopped updating her lost dog's chip reunites with him after 11y
The nanny-dog thing is a myth made up by a breeder and shared through basically Facebook chain letters. There is no historical basis that pits ever were recommended to watch babies.
tanjtanjtanj··on A Japanese glossary of chopsticks faux pas (2022)
The dish was not emulating anything like that, it just required a second set of chopsticks.
tanjtanjtanj··on Five years of running a systems reading group at Microsoft
I’m actually curious here, not trying to question your experience but does other people’s food regularly contaminate your food when you eat at the same table as them?

I’ve lived with a celiac sufferer before and I’ve never heard of something that extreme, but everyone’s different.

tanjtanjtanj··on A Japanese glossary of chopsticks faux pas (2022)
I ate at a very nice restaurant (think The Menu) in Kagaonsen last week and the main course was served with lacquered chopsticks but another course was served with disposable chopsticks and the waiter actually broke them and rubbed them together for me. I think the social faux pas is making a show of doing it.
tanjtanjtanj··on Elon Musk pushes out more xAI founders as AI coding effort falters
How recent? As recently as last weekend I was seeing blue check marks replying with AI generated only-technically-related replies on top of the majority of the posts I looked at.
tanjtanjtanj··on The L in "LLM" Stands for Lying
While there are many Roguelikes with procedural generation, I think the most popular ones do not. Slay the Spire, Risk of Rain 2, Hades 1/2, BoE etc are all handmade stages with a random order with randomized player powers rather than procedurally generated.
tanjtanjtanj··on Across the US, people are dismantling and destroying Flock surveillance cameras
Destroying speed cameras, especially the tire method, in the UK far predates ULEZ.
tanjtanjtanj··on Attention Media ≠ Social Networks
I've used my Facebook account once in the last decade, still keep it open as I have no reason to delete it and give up my parked identity (I share a name with a nationally recognizeable politician).
tanjtanjtanj··on Privilege is bad grammar
I don’t think parent implied that that are the only options, they just gave examples that can fit into categories.

Did you mean to add where your expensive polyester blend clothing lands on the spectrum they were illustrating?

tanjtanjtanj··on Apple testing new App Store design that blurs the line between ads and results
I was shocked by the App Store yesterday. I was searching for a well known app made by a huge f500 company. Now, this app is by some distance the most used app in its category but they had CHANGED the name of the app to the name of the second largest app of that kind. That’s crazy!

A near fraud from the company and real failure of curation from Apple.

tanjtanjtanj··on Allow me to introduce, the Citroen C15
Mine did until recently, which is the only state relevant to my comment.
tanjtanjtanj··on 50% of U.S. vinyl buyers don't own a record player
Absolutely the right move, I buy as much physical media as makes sense (hence using Apple Music so I can merge the two listening types)
tanjtanjtanj··on Allow me to introduce, the Citroen C15
I see SO many illegally modified trucks and I've never seen or heard of someone getting in trouble or failing inspection for them. It boggles my mind every time I see a car with tires extending half a foot on either side of the cabin veering here and there, making their presence everyone else's problem.
tanjtanjtanj··on Allow me to introduce, the Citroen C15
That seems unlikely as I literally left and did not buy a car with more options and stayed in contact afterwards but I have seen that technique before where they suddenly "find" one in inventory after they realize you aren't going to take the option that gives them more comission.
tanjtanjtanj··on Allow me to introduce, the Citroen C15
Just as an anecdote - When I was buying my last car I went in and asked for just the base model with nothing added onto it, ie not even the "eXtra Special" designations, and the dealership said they probably won't have any for a long time and if I'd like to pay 50% more for one with some features added on.

I declined and kept looking at the inventory of the 4-5 dealerships nearest to me. For six months they never had a single base model.

I started looking at another maker and they seemed to have base models that just wouldn't sell, stuck on lots for that same time period.

tanjtanjtanj··on Allow me to introduce, the Citroen C15
The best part about the F-150 is that it isn't even toddlers at that point. The most common F-150 variant I see in my area's hood goes up to my shoulder and I'm 2 meters tall.

You often see the very important people driving these working their way through crowded parking lots and places that are primarily foot traffic with a "Wtach out for ME!" driving style.

tanjtanjtanj··on A4 Paper Stories
Well I've never seen one move!
tanjtanjtanj··on A4 Paper Stories
I don’t know what specialty stores you’re talking about but A4 is readily available at most stationary stores, or anything related to letter writing, pens, or paper. I got the A5 notebook I’m currently using at Barnes and Noble, they also have A4.

Heck, I’m pretty sure you could get a sheaf of it at any number of office supply stores right now if you wanted.

tanjtanjtanj··on 50% of U.S. vinyl buyers don't own a record player
I don't think it requires an additional subscription. Apple music started as solely an "upload your music to play anywhere" service. I use apple music over the other offerings solely for this feature and for a large portion of it I didn't even have any apple devices and so didn't have iCloud+.
tanjtanjtanj··on AWS raises GPU prices 15% on a Saturday, hopes you weren't paying attention
I don’t know about Amazon but having migrated to/from both Spotify and Apple Music they are both ludicrously easy to export playlists/libraries from.
