tamrix··on Productivity porn
It's not knowledge acquisition. It's a false sense of accomplishment. You feel like you've learnt something that will help you be more productive. So your mind justifies the time you've spent learning it by thinking you've paid it back.

So mentally, you don't feel like your wasting time. Thus you consume more and more. Which for some, can create an addictive feedback loop similar but exaggerated as porn. Which ironically is wasting time.

Everything in life is in balance.

tamrix··on [dead]
In other news, the Mars applicants list has radically reduced over 95% in one day.
tamrix··on I regret my website redesign
What's 7k? One week of work + client comms ?

You can't really imagine anything being completed and deployed in that time.

It was a death trap to begin with. They're experience should have flagged this.

But both are equally at fault. This is what happens when clients have the lowest bidder mentality.

"the cheapest price is always the best option because it's the cheapest."

tamrix··on DevOps is a failure
Agreed. It also goes back to the sys admin problem which devops optimised in that the Dev team owns there code in production.

I've seen success with a dedicated devops member on a team but having a dedicated devops team just introduces delays and latency when fixing pipelines or releasing. The very same problem we had with sys admins.

tamrix··on Ask HN: Any certification that is worth it? Legitimately helped your career?
Certificates say, I've read the manual. Solving the problem is much different.
tamrix··on Linus Torvalds: Rust for the Kernel Could Possibly Be Merged for Linux 5.20
Time to fork?

I'm going to call the new c only Linux cinux

tamrix··on Ergo – modern IRC server written in Go
And don't forget idling in your friends chat rooms so it appears higher on the list and randos would join.
tamrix··on GitHub Copilot is generally available
Maybe try property based testing instead?
tamrix··on GitHub Copilot is generally available
In my experience, most of the code snippets weren't useful and testing the less useful code snippets costs more time than it saves.
tamrix··on Ask HN: How do you cultivate social skills?
Learn to dance.
tamrix··on Despite best efforts .NET is still not an open platform
Didn't they hire the guy that made omnisharp anyway?
tamrix··on LaMDA is not sentient
It's called advertising.
tamrix··on Shortsightedness has become an epidemic
My parents would call it square eyes lol
tamrix··on Show HN: Browser extension that spoofs your location data to match your VPN
You've also got to set you locale aswell. It's easy to see if you've set your language to say Australian English.
tamrix··on Work from home and the office real estate apocalypse
Not a chance. This is completely unrealistic without major, major reconstruction. It's cheaper to deconstruct and build a new building in its place.

Imagine the amount of plumbing you would have to redo for the toilets. There all sorts of codes for apartments, there must be so many windows, you need natural light in bedrooms etc

tamrix··on How we put IPFS in Brave (2021)
There's different profiles you can select from. You might have the server profile enabled. Powers save probably consumes the least abs you can opt out of sharing altogether. But the entire point is p2p.
tamrix··on .01% of Bitcoin holders hold 27% of all Bitcoin
There's better break downs videos on YouTube which go into far more detail including over time.

The top 9/10 are exchanges so it's not too surprisingly.

tamrix··on 460M Indian Internet Users Are Now on IPv6
So that's why I had to disable ipv6 this morning.
tamrix··on Ask HN: Is DBA still a good job?
It's about as dead as the role webmaster.

Just call yourself sysops or database engineer depending on if you actually want to maintain DBMS or write sql. Or come up with dbops or sqlops lol. Everyone else is doing it.

tamrix··on Exit interviews are a trap
And always say the money wasn't enough. Your past employees will thank you. ;)
tamrix··on Britain being forced to go cashless 'against its will'
As odd as it sounds. The ones that seek safety and protection from authority would actually enjoy your suggestion and actively.

If you ask why, they'll say it's for the 'greater good' . They actually want it to happen. As it forms a new social hierarchy of obidence which may, one day, outrank the social hiarchy of evil capitalism.

In fact, they'll go as far as discrediting and attacking you for even suggesting what you said. As that's against the greater good (saving environment, war efforts, meat is bad, etc) and ironically, attacking demonstrates true obedience.

tamrix··on Ask HN: If you used to be socially awkward and shy, how did you improve?
Honestly, you're going to hate this answer by like anything it gets better with practice. Get yourself out there. There's no drug or storehouse cure or anything other then doing it.
tamrix··on Welcome to Web 3.0
Steemit.com has been around for life 5 years now and it's not a demo.
tamrix··on Web3 doesn’t care about privacy
Precisely why it needs to change.
tamrix··on Files – Single-file photo gallery and file manager
Konquer used to do this some 15 years ago. Was pretty cool back then because you could view it in konquer itself.
tamrix··on Web3 doesn’t care about privacy
Tor was for privacy.

No one cares about privacy anyway.

tamrix··on People don't work as much as they say
Almost anyone that brags to others about how many hours they work typically count checking their emails while watching TV as work.
tamrix··on Ask HN: Gmail account security
I know cloudflare uses a trick with canvas element to fingerprint the browser. If you disable it, it can be actually impossible to bypass.

It's not so much a social credit score to fear rather than privacy. Any site using cloudflare or Google knows where you're going and what your doing and if they don't then, access denied.

They know so much more than your innocent mind will want to admit.

tamrix··on Show HN: I'm building a non-profit search engine
Ironically enough tracking you is what improves the search results.
tamrix··on Closing email with “thanks” gets the most replies
Cheers
