tambourine_man··on Leaving Linux
Another shout-out for MacVim.

My favorite editor for years, I use it in conjunction with Vim in the terminal. I’ve been trying to move to NeoVim but can never find the time. And regular MacVim/Vim is already awesome.

I used to visit it daily.

tambourine_man··on M-DISC – DVD/Blu-ray compatible discs that may last up to 1000 years
Every few years or so I flirt with the idea of backing up to M-Disks. Then I remember how slow and low density they are.

For recording and forgetting, I recently played with LTO, again.

But I always end up at local HDD + remote AWS Glacier.

tambourine_man··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
> …high speed jogging - not something that you typically do very often on a music player.

That’s exactly what you often do on them, when they are good at it. How would you rather browse a large library: one by one, slowly, or use a non-linear accelerator to quickly get close to where you want to be and then precisely pick your choice?

The click wheel was brilliant software and hardware, simultaneously, which is why I call it “Apple at its best”.

It could have been good software with unreliable, wobbly hardware, or robust hardware with a slight rendering delay, which would break the illusion. Instead it was sturdy, responsive and just a joy to use. Much like Apple’s trackpads, which remain surprisingly unmatched.

But I guess we have different tastes on music players.

tambourine_man··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
The iPod's click wheel was amazing. Grab one if you have the chance and play a bit with it. I imagine a lot of people don't remember or have never used. Such a great feel and UX, Apple at its best.

iTunes was also unrivaled in its first versions, before it became an everything app. And syncing was pretty great before ubiquitous internet was a thing.

tambourine_man··on Xiaomi: New CPU matches Apple cores single threaded, much faster multithreaded
“…of course, Apple may soon announce their next processor”

I’m pretty sure they will, as they have, like clockwork, in the same month, for over a decade.

tambourine_man··on Show HN: iPhone app takes simultaneous images from 2 lenses, fuses into 1 photo
Nice idea.

On my phone, at least, I had to pintch-to-zoom to 2-3X to see the difference.

And at that size, the “synthesized” version looks much sharper.

You might need more cropping for the mobile version. At 1X I couldn’t tell them apart.

Haven’t checked the desktop version yet

Did Tippett enjoy working on the Dinosaur Input Device as much as he did with his go-motion technique?

I see employability being discussed far more often than joy.

If your motivation was selling as many clothes as possible, then the industrial textile revolution was miraculous.

If you enjoyed knitting threads together, it was the crushing victory of mediocrity.

> why do you keep assigning Dye God-like powers?

He was VP of Design. That's as close to being design-god at Apple as you can get.

> Somehow we are led to believe that all of them were against this direction, and Dye single-handedly forced all the changes through.

I don't think that's a widely held belief. What's puzzling and scary to me is how so many people either stayed silent, failed to disagree or quit. How a deeply entrenched design culture can so easily crumble.

On your first point, I don't know if Lemay merely agreed to keep his job or was an enthusiast of the vision. But it is a bit worrisome, if Bloomberg is to be believed.

On your second, Liquid Glass is merely the culmination of years of bad direction. Hiding essential feature on hover (notification's close icon, elapsed time on Apple Music, proxy icon, etc), poor contrast, legibility, background/foreground differentiation, was a long running process.

On your third point, I think it's possible and, if that's the case, deeply troubling.

tambourine_man··on Free the Icons
I am very, very curious how he reached, stayed that long at the top of the org chart and convinced so many people that this was a good direction to take.

If I were at Apple's leadership I'd consider that a major blindspot and focus deeply on fixing it.

Gruber does not have a monopoly on disliking Alan Dye’s work. On the contrary, I never met anyone who knew UI design was a thing that liked what he did.

When you’re using a tool for 40 years and someone who really has no clue gets in charge, starts breaking basic functionality for no good reason and affecting your day to day work, it’s not hard to get infuriated.

tambourine_man··on Free the Icons
Early on, when UI/UX was emerging as a discipline, user reaction times and accuracy were measured across a large number of participants. There are many stories during the development of the Lisa and Mac of unexpected user behavior and results.

We shouldn’t be guessing if uniformity helps distinguish between apps or not. We could very easily test it.

But UI/UX has long distanced itself from science, for whatever reason. Maybe because users are so proficient these days that almost anything works. We used to required training on how to use a mouse, menus and windows.

It’s been probably a decade since I’ve heard anyone mention Fitt’s law, for instance, and Liquid Glass atrocities are direct a consequence of disregarding all that was learned in this field.

tambourine_man··on Gmail thinks I'm stupid, so I left
I only ever use Gmail's backend. I've been using it for years with Mail.app on both Mac and iOS. Every time I load the web interface I'm appalled.

Not that Mail.app is amazing. It sometimes corrupts its sqlite db (I have 300k+ emails dating back to the late 90s). But it's still way better than the dreadful web interface that only seems to get worse and slower.

tambourine_man··on AI has a multiplying effect on existing technical skills
> After a thorough independent code audit with cross-verification from three AI systems (Claude, Codex/GPT-5.2, Gemini), we confirm that this project is a non-functional facade.

So, a nonfunctional project is created by AI and AI is used to attests its nonfunctionality.

What a brave new world.

tambourine_man··on Apple, Intel have reached preliminary chip-making deal
Intel has been deemed a national security asset. Essential infrastructure.

The government (both current and previous administrations) is doing everything it can to make sure they do keep up, at the very least. And with enough money being thrown at it, they probably will.

tambourine_man··on New mechanical panoramic film camera from Jeff Bridges
I was trying to understand what’s new in this version compared to the old one. From the site:

What Has Changed

  - Modern precision
  - Serviceable parts
  - Modern glass
  - Improved rewind
  - Custom finishes
Which is a bit too vague for my taste.

tambourine_man··on Rebasing in Magit
Depends on where you’re coming from.

If you have a decades old .vimrc like I do, that meant a few conditionals to load niceties such as LSP when running on nvim. I got that mostly working but there are still a few things missing.

If you’re starting from scratch, that’s much easier.

tambourine_man··on Rebasing in Magit
Yes, I use fugitive everyday and it’s a very clever plugin. But when I see magit I know what I’m missing.
