tamalesfan··on Experiments find higher social class more likely to have inflated sense of skill
And then there is Trudeau... pure charisma, arrogantly certain of his establishment group-think and almost entirely incompetent.
tamalesfan··on Homeless Population Jumps by Thousands Across the San Francisco Bay Area
> I get the sense that this kind of right-shifting after a few years in SF is not uncommon.

I'll believe it when it shows up in voting behavior. Nothing is going to improve until you change who you elect. Nothing at all.

FYI; someone camps out on my doorstep they're gone with one call; no debate. Your "homeless" problem is not a nation wide phenomena. This is you; the government you chose, the policies you voted for. No one else is at fault for this. It's you. Look around at what you made.

tamalesfan··on Third fatal Tesla Autopilot crash renews questions about system
Literal whataboutism.

Automated systems are held to a higher standard. Telsa's Autopilot apparently has trouble spotting trailers and decapitates the occupants. Cite all the accident figures you want; it won't stop the reporting about Autopilot wrecks.

tamalesfan··on VW’s Former CEO Charged in Germany Over Diesel Rigging
> So, if someone falls for a pyramid scheme they should be ashamed of themselves?

A little, yes.

Detecting 'too good to be true' is an important aspect of judgement. Blithely inculcating every claim when it aligns with self interest is at the root of many evils.

You can see it in the post; the test drive sold it. This isn't an anomaly. VW buyers cite that same observation over and over. They liked the performance; they were buying performance.

When some yob brings a gas powered V8 pony car home from the dealer we're all granted permission to sneer at the selfish fool. Yet somehow the millions of VW buyers that learned about the kick in the pants product with the respectable badge are all mysteriously exempt and entitled to absolution.

Not from me.

tamalesfan··on VW’s Former CEO Charged in Germany Over Diesel Rigging
> As a former owner of 2 TDI dirty diesels

Sounds like you enjoyed your diesel hot rods for a good long while. You really should consider foregoing your martyrdom at some point; the well of sympathy for you isn't bottomless. Some of us can recall the years of self righteous VW owners lecturing the world about their little miracle cars.

You bought into a fraud. An honorable person finds a little shame in that, even when they can claim innocence.

tamalesfan··on EU Agencies Falsely Report More Than 550 Archive.org URLs as Terrorist Content
You don't. The indirection designed into the EU to isolate the government from the governed is deliberate and there is no recourse.
tamalesfan··on People Who Eat the Same Meal Every Day
1800 word exercise in navel gazing, and it attract 200+ comments and growing.

If you read this wall of text and then spent a good chunk of Friday writing one or more lengthy comments about it you should know something; you're living in paradise. Actual paradise. You have nothing to complain about because you've been entirely liberated from any significant burdens or risks. You've won.

Congratulations.

tamalesfan··on Austin Is Building a Mini Silicon Valley
The SALT deduction cap removes an important incentive for perusing (using mortgage leverage) high value residential properties. Now we just need to cap mortgage interest deduction to a much lower level.

It's going to be a lot less appealing for high income people to pile into a few coastal areas when they can no longer deduct away most of their Federal tax liabilities by borrowing a $700K house.

tamalesfan··on Austin Is Building a Mini Silicon Valley
I believe the last time anyone outside of Austin heard anything about transportation in Austin -- public or otherwise -- it was that they had banned Uber for some reason. What's the latest on that?
tamalesfan··on RIP Culture War Thread
>> anyone can get a website and domain name.

Except they can't. The outrage brigades come after the registrars and the hosting services and the payment processors and anyone else they can coerce into compliance. A few platforms have survived this process (...so far...) and are thriving, but joe schmoe will get disappeared in no time at all.

tamalesfan··on When India Kicked Out Coca-Cola, Local Sodas Thrived
> Normal economic theory says protectionism makes the pie smaller for everyone

And when those theories are discussed by serious minded people they are frequently forced to qualify the discussion with "except for those left behind," mostly because of the unavoidably obvious destruction all around them.

"Those left behind" being a euphemism for the working class of otherwise extremely wealthy countries.

When you've heard enough of this for enough decades it eventually dawns on you that it's just about cheap, exploitable labor. The rest is the professional class b.s. spin used to rationalize it.

tamalesfan··on Many Americans Feel Cheated by Their Student Loans
"Colleges already provide an entire department or two of professionals"

I don't think we've actually run out that string however; you have to go a long, long way before academe recognizes the futility of throwing more 'guidance' at the problem.

tamalesfan··on Many Americans Feel Cheated by Their Student Loans
No. Never. Graduated high school in '88. All I heard from infancy was the 'Education!' chant. It was understood that 'Education!' was the answer and the rest would fall into place. Every degree is equally valid and damn anyone that dares claim otherwise.

No thought given to the fact that a large fraction of people aren't really capable of intellectually challenging tasks and professional class behavior, and I mean from the womb.

Just 'Education! Education!'

tamalesfan··on Many Americans Feel Cheated by Their Student Loans
Interesting phrase: “the retributive view”

Apparently criticizing poor decision making is a bad thing and so here we're provided a convenient pejorative with which to dismiss it.

Recently we've seen many notables dismiss uneducated white Trump supporters as poor decision makers; their outcomes being entirely their own fault and so we need consider their views no further. I wonder if they'll be permitted to demean such behavior as “retributive.”

I don't actually wonder that. The answer is as certain as a physical law.

These kids were sold a bill of goods. One might hope they've learned that good paying jobs will not magically appear simply by chanting 'Education!' We can't actually evacuate most of our industrial base to Asia and force the remaining employers into ever greater oligopolies through regulatory pressure and still have a middle class.

But I think that's a false hope. Instead they'll do precisely as they've been trained and vote for the promises of the political class; the very people that taught them to mindlessly chant 'Education!' in the first place.

tamalesfan··on PostgreSQL used fsync incorrectly for 20 years
"Multiple people" were left with nothing better to which to attribute maintainer decisions. See the dysfunction there? Don't address the problem, or the proposed solution; just leave it to fester and create discontent.

That's not how well run projects function.

tamalesfan··on PostgreSQL used fsync incorrectly for 20 years
> Do you really expect us to integrate patches without thinking about that?

Whoa! You made huge leap there. At what point was it suggested that patches be recklessly applied?

That didn't happen. Your quote actually suggests a reasonable progression and at no point is there any suggestion, implied or otherwise, that changes be integrated without due consideration.

Not irrationally dismissing criticism != abandoning sound design and development.

tamalesfan··on NHTSA’s Implausible Safety Claim for Tesla’s Autosteer Driver Assistance System [pdf]
"You don't have to sue"

There is literally an App[1] to track the progress of the hundreds of FOIA lawsuits outstanding at any given moment. The federal Government routinely denies FOIA requests and forces applicants to pursue them in court. If attributing this to Trump would help you inculcate this reality then have a look at this[2]. Agencies are deliberately not investing in IT systems that would serve to facilitate FOIA, according to MIT[3].

1. http://foiaproject.org/lawsuit/ 2. http://foiaproject.org/2018/01/16/lawsuits-trump-first-year/ 3. https://www.pcworld.com/article/3097047/software/the-fbi-is-...

Now that your objection to a key premise of this story has been comprehensively discredited, perhaps you might make the necessary world view adjustment and reconsider your conclusion.

BTW, the foiaproject links above are concerned only with Federal FOIA; similar state laws exist and the number of FOIA lawsuits at the state level are legion. Your governments are actively thwarting FOIA at every level.

tamalesfan··on Effectiveness of Photodynamic Therapy in Elimination of HPV in Mexican Women [pdf]
> The drug violence is fueled by the USA's demand for drugs.

So goes the conventional group think. Thing is Mexico isn't the only nation that shares a long border with the US. Yet somehow Canada isn't yet another murder capital of the world, busily feeding the relentless US appetite for drugs.

But analyzing the difference between Mexico and Canada isn't something you're allow to do; it rapidly produces extremely uncomfortable results that contemporary good-thinkers don't ever dare entertain.

tamalesfan··on Effectiveness of Photodynamic Therapy in Elimination of HPV in Mexican Women [pdf]
The 91 people killed in January while stealing gasoline from a deliberately ruptured pipeline burned to death 320 miles South of the US border. When 43 students were rounded up by the police and handed over to a cartel for execution and disposal in 2014 they were 532 miles south of the US; halfway to Guatemala. The 2011 Monterrey casino arson attack that killed 52 people was 90 miles from the US.

I know it's the fashion to Blame America First in all things, but Mexico has enormous problems well beyond its border with the US.
