tallon··on Home ownership is the West’s biggest economic-policy mistake
I guess it's something you don't understand if you don't want/have kids.
tallon··on Mark in the Middle
>If everyone has a gun, we aren't all safer

If everyone who is responsible has a gun, we are all safer.

tallon··on Mark in the Middle
The ACLU was founded to protect the rights of Communists after World War I to say what they want. The ACLU fought to defend the free speech of KKK members and Nazis. The phrase "I disagree with you but I defend to the death your right to say it" is unique to America and was actually something fought for until recently when even the ACLU caved.

>spreading blatant viral lies on social media

You even admit this is arguable. You're assuming people are morons who need big brother to help them out - you don't really believe in democratic principles if this is your stance. The enforcement of punishing such lies is inconsistent as well. One needs only to look at the blatant left wing bias of Twitter and Facebook, where conservatives are banned for expressing opinions whereas lies told by media outlets (with small corrections added days later) are left up and not punished at all.

tallon··on Executive order expected to suspend H-1B, other visas until end of year
You can take the high approach and give up your job for someone else, then. Are you going to welcome strangers into your family and your home as well? Resources are limited, that is a fact. If you've never experienced that, consider yourself very lucky and privileged, and work to deserve that good fortune and privilege.
tallon··on POTUS: 75 Year old appearing to scan communications in order to black out eqpmnt
Let what happen?
tallon··on US officials knew of Wuhan health crisis in November, a second report claims
Maybe the Chinese government shouldn't have been hiding information and silencing doctors, or the Taiwanese, or the WHO providing bad guidance even back in January.
tallon··on Show HN: Firefox addon that hides news articles about Covid-19
You just made me spit out my coffee, thanks!
tallon··on Caffeine boosts problem-solving ability but not creativity, study indicates
Balzac, you're breaking my heart. How dare you...

I love coffee. Thanks for sharing.

tallon··on Ask HN: Which charities do you donate to?
How do you find your local food shelf?
tallon··on Common Parasite Linked to Personality Changes Making You More Outgoing
This is weird, for the longest time I thought that T. Gondii had the exact opposite effect - making someone more introverted. Apparently that was/is true only for males, whereas it's supposed to make women more extraverted.

tallon··on U of Chicago projected to be the first U.S. university to cost $100k per year
Half of all college students don't finish their 4-year degree in 5 years, and it's not due to cost. Even countries like France, Netherlands, etc which have lower costs for college, place you in a track when you're in your freshman year of high school. This track determines if you're going to college, a trade, or somewhere in between, and it's hard to switch from lower to higher tracks. College should not be a goal for 100% of the population like we have now, there should be a greater push for trades like chefs, electricians, HVAC technicians, plumbers, woodworking, metal working, glass blowing. You're an apprentice, you get paid a livable wage, and you have 0 student loans.
tallon··on The stockmarket is now run by computers, algorithms and passive managers
It's actually the last person who walked the final path, because they made the decision to implement the code that way.
tallon··on Reddit has quarantined /r/The_Donald
Right, and r/politics, which is the left leaning version of T_D, doesn’t have any reprimands despite having frequent calls of violence against cops. It’s a double standard.
tallon··on Principles and Techniques of Data Science
Hey, thanks for sharing this!
tallon··on Twitter Exec Is Questioned About “Learn to Code”
Interesting, because I felt anger and annoyance listen to the exec talk without emotion, who ended up trying to dodge the questions with claims of "context" or that she, the lead of the legal team, doesn't know what he is talking about.
tallon··on How I Erased Facebook Comments and Likes
Not if you have a natural flow for all the random visits.
tallon··on Ex-Facebook insider says covert data harvesting was routine
Oh please. Aaron Schwartz never said anything like that at his age. Mark Zuckerberg is not a baby, not even at 19.
tallon··on Peter Thiel to serve as Trump delegate
This just shows how little you know about Trump's policies.
tallon··on Venture capitalist says a $28 minimum wage would create a more robust economy
There's no basis to do any of the three things you suggested, nor is it legal.
tallon··on Diet that mimics fasting appears to slow aging
"V.D.L. and T.E.M. have equity interest in L-Nutra, a company that develops medical food. 100% of the L-Nutra equity belonging to V.D.L. will be donated to non-profit organizations. Neither author had any role in data analysis."

from the paper.

VDL is the PI though.

tallon··on There exists a classical model of the photon after all
I disagree with the suggestion of Griffith's QM. Somehow, Griffiths made an excellent EM book, but terrible QM. I find Shankar's Principles of Quantum Mechanics to be much more comprehensive and easy to follow.
tallon··on Facebook is Getting Old
I feel the same way - lighter, unencumbered. I left Facebook almost a year ago and haven't been back. My main reason was privacy concerns, but I also felt empty after checking it many times a day. It was a great decision, and more people in my social circle have left since.
tallon··on Show HN: Automatic weekly meal planner, also plans your leftovers
This is amazing.
tallon··on Will That Be Trash or Credit?
I'm pretty sure the advice given was sarcasm.
