talldrinkofwhat··on Where's the shovelware? Why AI coding claims don't add up
The author of the article had an interesting solution to this. Flip a coin to see who implements the feature.

Heads you code. Tails you review.

talldrinkofwhat··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2025)
Where does one apply for a generalist role / any flexibility on Visa sponsoring if I relocate myself? (My experience is lock and key for what you've got going e.g. I founded a robotic tile laying company, and an IoT Ag-tech company)
talldrinkofwhat··on The A.I. Monarchy
A wishlist as short as it is improbable:

1. Overturn citizens united. (get money out of politics)

2. Rank-choice voting. (get extremists out of politics)

3. Remove cap on House of Representatives (washington only wanted 1 rep per 30,000 people... we're currently at 1 per 750,000...) (get lack of representation out of politics)

4. Mandatory voting / national holiday.

e.g. at its core, people are not being heard (or even worse, feel like their voice doesn't matter) and vested interests have fully taken the wheel.

talldrinkofwhat··on DOGE puts $1 spending limit on government employee credit cards
Hard to multiply without a host.
talldrinkofwhat··on US and UK refuse to sign AI safety declaration at summit
I think it's worth noting that we can't even combat the real horrors. The fox is already in the henhouse. The quote that sticks with me is:

"We've already lost our first encounter with AI" - I think Yuval Hurari.

Algorithms heavily thumbed the scales on our social contracts. Where did all of the division come from? Why is extremism blossoming everywhere? Because it gets clicks. Maybe we're just better observing what's been going on under the hood all along, but it seems like there's about 350 million little cans of gasoline dousing American eyeballs.

Make Algorithms Govern All indeed.

talldrinkofwhat··on Insomnia, Control
Genetic diversity is a damnable thing. Listen to your body. Mine gets "hot" when I drink (I suspect it's general inflammation when my liver is working overtime to break everything down), which then disallows proper sleep.

If I've been dry for ~ a week, I'll notice sleep degradation around two beers drank <4 hours before going to bed.

If I've been in a groove of going out, the limit is higher.

talldrinkofwhat··on What really happens inside a dating app
I would watch this romcom.
talldrinkofwhat··on Eggs US – Price – Chart
If you ever get the opportunity, have a chicken perch on your finger.

First thing you'll notice is much lighter they are than they look.

Second thing you'll notice is how hot their feet are.

A tangible lesson in the importance of surface area vs volume wrt mechanical, thermo, aero systems.

talldrinkofwhat··on Is the world becoming uninsurable?
Hey I'm trying to alleviate this issue from a technical standpoint and am trying to find others to join me. It's no cure-all, but the other paths would upend a century of legal precedence. Shoot me a PM if you're looking for work.
talldrinkofwhat··on Trump wins presidency for second time
"You’re supposed to make only two quarts of Kool-Aid from a package, but he always made a gallon, so his Kool-Aid was a mere shadow of its desired potency. And you’re supposed to add a cup of sugar to every package of Kool-Aid, but he never put any sugar in his Kool-Aid because there wasn’t any sugar to put in it.

He created his own Kool-Aid reality and was able to illuminate himself by it." -Brautigan

talldrinkofwhat··on Ask HN: What's the "best" book you've ever read?
Still waiting for January and my morning ritual of juicing a small grapefruit into an 8oz ice-filled mason jar.

It's a damn shame we haven't figured out how to coerce citrus like we do tomatoes.

talldrinkofwhat··on Rare Vinyl Records
When the only evidence of existence is a horrendous rip on youtube, I'm not exactly surprised they don't stock Mr. Haangala's sophomore offering:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZWftEpqRWQ
talldrinkofwhat··on Pour over Coffee Got Good
Nice things I own:

1. 1zpresso hand grinder

2. 1974 Honda CL125S

3. Black totem cam x 2

Everything else can go to the dump as far as I'm concerned.

talldrinkofwhat··on Steve Ballmer's incorrect binary search interview question
The way I read it:they inserted the manager as a litmus test AGAINST aggression / toxic culture. Kind of like when a psychology test is given, the __thing__ they're trying to measure is always one level removed / abstracted to avoid subjects gaming the system. I suppose deceptive practices in interviews don't bode well, but I could see the argument given the interviewee could be deceptive (something that this site complains about a lot with upper management / ChiefBullshittingOperatives etc.)
talldrinkofwhat··on A Mini Monitor for a Pi
Furthering the love, without the cursing, bent tweezers, and ruined retainer clips (getting the connectors out of the casings sometimes results in all of the above), you can purchase pre-crimped wires, then assemble as needed (https://www.pololu.com/category/299/ribbon-cable-with-pre-cr...).
talldrinkofwhat··on A Man with an Impossible Memory
If you haven't done yourself the favor already, read the referenced story, Borges' "Funes the Memorious". It, like most of his work, is a pearl of simplicity and haunting implications.
talldrinkofwhat··on The only two log levels you need are INFO and ERROR
This sounds extremely appealing as I either have to take the performance hit and nose through the entire debug log to get to where the error occurred, or have errors occur and not be able to reconstruct the events that drove them.

Any tips on rolling your own? My first whack would probably be treating it like a packed message, e.g.

<start_char> <n_packed_bytes> <time> <file> <line> <n_args> <arg1_type><arg1_raw_dump> ... <format_str>

with everything aside from the format string having agreed upon byte-counts, and probably have the file names getting dumped to a lookup chart. There's probably something more elegant, but I've never been good at straying too far eclectic.

talldrinkofwhat··on Daily-Driving a Blackberry in 2023
Where exactly are you accounting for wasted time? On navigation? On posting about not having a smartphone? The amount of time saved not having a smartphone (interacting with the internet using a computer [keyboards, adblockers, multiple screens, user vs owner dynamics]) outweighs any extra costs in my opinion. Navigating around town becomes second nature once you stop receiving turn by turn directions from Google-et-al. The only argument I've ever heard of that rings true is not having access to ride shares (ironicly named to boot).
talldrinkofwhat··on Yes, social media is a cause of the epidemic of teenage mental illness
There are no step-by-step guides for living your life. If there were, the only person who could write them would be you 20 years in the future. If you were to follow them, the person who wrote them would not exist, because the wisdom of knowing what to do and what not to do is borne from error embodied. Work on yourself, but do not wait for some magical moment where you say "ah, so this is what it's like to be complete". The moment does not exist. Find people who will accept you as you are, and they will help you become the person you strive to be.
talldrinkofwhat··on Banning open weight models would be a disaster
If posts with multiple paragraphs encircling a topic seems suspect, then we're all guilty. Their points are cogent. If they've dressed the arguments in robes of "purple", so be it.
talldrinkofwhat··on Post-operative cognitive dysfunction is exacerbated by high-fat diet
Isn't the real mis-step of this study that they put the rats on a HFD 3 (three!) days before testing? I thought it was common knowledge that the transitory periods of ketosis elevate blood lipids until your body adapts to its new food source / arrives at a new equilibrium. I would think their conclusion should be

"Taken together, the present data indicate that (!__consumption of__) -> <__transition onto__> a HFD prior to laparotomy prolongs the neuroinflammatory response to surgery and induces persistent memory deficits in young adult and aged rats. We demonstrated that both age groups who ate HFD for 3 days prior to surgery displayed robust cued-fear memory deficits, and aged rats additionally exhibited contextual memory deficits. These memory impairments were associated with exaggerated and prolonged (3 weeks post-surgery)"

Which is just another way to say, don't inflame your entire body with a new diet prior to undergoing surgery (which in and of itself is massively stressful).

talldrinkofwhat··on JetZero: Ultra-efficient blended wing body jet
Wow I didn't scroll down far enough.

The gang is back together (Liebeck and Rawdon) and they even threw in Kroo for good measure. This has all the heavy hitters gathered under the same roof.

talldrinkofwhat··on JetZero: Ultra-efficient blended wing body jet
They're engineers. Not fashion designers.
talldrinkofwhat··on JetZero: Ultra-efficient blended wing body jet
Not just the board. Their CTO came up with the idea (with two other legendary greybeards) years before most of us were sucking air. Mark's been at the heart of the LA aerospace scene for quite a while, is as intelligent as he is humble, and I'm genuinely happy that he's finally going to get an honest crack at this.
talldrinkofwhat··on Coin sized battery can last 50 years without recharge – coming in 2025
P=IV (power = current * voltage)

Lipos -> 3.7V nominal once you're in the meat of it. 100uW -> 27uA @3.7V, which is a __VERY__ generous current budget with modern microcontrollers and effective use of sleep modes.

AAA Cells -> 1200mAH @27uA -> 5rs

AA Cells -> 2200mAH @27uA -> 9.3yrs

C Cells -> 9000mAH @27uA -> 38yrs

Then just remember that this thing is smaller than all of those, has no self discharge which typically steals 2-3% of the battery capacity year-over-year, and that with lipo's you can't use the last chunk of nameplate capacity due to precipitous voltage drop at the end of the discharge curve.

talldrinkofwhat··on Learning bimanual mobile manipulation with low-cost whole-body teleoperation
I'm about a decade out, so I'm sure the SOTA has moved the goal-posts, but the work I did in grad(ish) school revolved around making end-effectors (fancy word for robot hands) that could both grab a styrofoam cup, and grab a wet glass (cylindrical, no pint-cheaters). Plenty of cups were crushed. Plenty of glasses were dropped. Nothing that did both happened by the time I graduated.

The amount of feedback built into your end-effectors (pedantic word for human hands) is insane. If you're not familiar, proprioception is a good google/wiki hole. Most of the signals that allow you to move your hands don't even hit the brain stem, let alone the boss upstairs.

The challenge mostly lies in how we've instrumented these things. Precision requires low tolerances. Low tolerances + unexpected environment == you've just driven your robot through the countertop/pan/coworker or broken a very nicely geared servo.

talldrinkofwhat··on New scalable, fault-tolerant, and efficient open-source MQTT broker
Does MQTT offer anything novel to the call/response problem if it's not just updates (e.g. battery controlled nodes that need to know when to wake up and act)?

I started developing a system ~a decade ago and ended up writing my own messaging protocols/queue systems. It's been an uphill battle, and if there's something a little more modern in the wings I'm all ears (I'm porting over to more modern uC's so it makes sense to re-evaluate the stack I suppose...)

talldrinkofwhat··on Tinnitus linked to undetected auditory nerve damage
The beauty of our race is it's absurd ability to accept uncomfortable situations as "normal".

the obvious exceptions being chronic pain, and the jets' imperative to steal defeat from the jaws of victory.

talldrinkofwhat··on Pythagorean Theorem found on clay tablet 1k years older than Pythagoras (2009)

talldrinkofwhat··on Oscilloscope watch ships after 10 years on Kickstarter
escape is mapped to thumb-hold + tilde. Your hand already opens up to push esc, so it's not even an inconvenience in my workflow.

The function keys are a bit more of a pain, but once again it's a thumb press + number (1->F1 etc). I'm more inconvenienced by eclipse and visual studio not having the same button for debug-step-over than actually pushing the thing.
