talldatethrow··on Apple's requirements are about to hit creators and fans on Patreon
The government and medical establishment has watched as cancer rates have risen over the last few generations. They're getting better at treating the things yes, as they help us get more over it.

Take mammograms for example. Some European countries have stopped using them all together because even the US admits it raises the likelihood of getting breast cancer. But the US medical system will tell you it's worth increasing your chances of breast cancer from mammograms, because they help you catch breast cancer you may have gotten in other ways earlier, thus making it more treatable.

Not a bet I would take personally. But women are rarely told that. Every women I've told that to is shocked.

talldatethrow··on Susan Wojcicki has died
On both sides probably. One side exaggerates statistics to make their point, and the other wishfully accepts unproven statements to feel better.

I've taken basically all vaccines ever recommended while growing up and traveling, but to say that the covid vaccine was "safe and effective" a year after coming out was a crazy stretch. Why couldn't they just say "we didn't have time to do long term studies, but we think it's fine and worth the risks"? But to say it's safe was a lie IMO and lost the vaccine side a lot of credibility.

talldatethrow··on Susan Wojcicki has died
Rumble and X posts are gloating that she blocked/delisted anti covid vaccine videos on YouTube, and then gets cancer, something the videos tried to warn people of related to vaccines.

I'm not sure what to say about that anymore.

talldatethrow··on Show HN: Turn any website into a knowledge base for LLMs
I think a website owner can decide. They can take the site down, or they can put it behind some kind of user wall.
talldatethrow··on One-man SaaS, 9 Years In
Not really, Id open myself up to countless nerds testing and poking.
talldatethrow··on One-man SaaS, 9 Years In
I also have a one man show Saas with 34 companies paying that pays my bills.

It runs on namecheap shared hosting.

If it goes down, I trust namecheap to fix it asap. If it goes down and someone called me, I don't really know what I would do anyway....

In 6 years it has never been a problem.

PHP and jQuery. I use phpmyadmin via cpanel to manage the database.

talldatethrow··on Every company should be owned by its employees
Countless reasons. Office is near my home, and maybe Im not hiring material at those better companies. But I might be bright enough to see that they are doing better than my company.
talldatethrow··on Unconditional Cash Study: first findings available
The 3k was per month... Just using the common phrase of working all week with only weekends off to show the comparison.
talldatethrow··on Every company should be owned by its employees
Apparently there are more people with money than there are houses. So don't tell me people cant afford houses. Tell me that there are so few houses that they are overpriced or something, and only the top 25% can buy them.
talldatethrow··on Every company should be owned by its employees
People can absolutely afford houses. They can so easily afford houses that they buy them quickly, often for over asking.

If people couldn't afford houses, they would sit unsold until sellers lowered the price to a price someone could afford. Luckily so many people can afford houses in most areas they don't have to do that.

talldatethrow··on Every company should be owned by its employees
The company I work for sucks. I rather take more cash and just by stocks in companies I believe in more.
talldatethrow··on Unconditional Cash Study: first findings available
It makes you work shy because unless you have a high paying job, it doesn't make sense to work.

$3k with tons of free time all week.

Or add working for $3k extra money by giving up all your free time? Not worth it.

Unless of course apartments become $5k a month since that's about the money that a person on UBI plus a bad job has..

talldatethrow··on Unconditional Cash Study: first findings available
I think why people work at the jobs they do is a lot more complicated than that.

Many people do work to avoid starvation PLUS maintain whatever level of standards they've become comfortable with.

But the reason IMO people work non basic jobs is because if they are already forced to work their entire lives to avoid starvation, they might as well optimize. If I have to commute, and maintain a car, and be there for 40+ hours a week, I might as well invest in getting the most out of that as possible.

But once people have enough money to maintain their comfortable lifestyle for the rest of their life, many do retire.

talldatethrow··on Unconditional Cash Study: first findings available
That's probably because the second order effects of UBI are obvious to anyone that's ever had a job. So you have the people that know the obvious, and the people that want to hide the obvious from the few that don't get it.

The covid handouts and raised unemployment benefits gave a sneak peak to anyone else that was blind.

Even things on the user market were on shirt supply and with high prices. In California the effective unemployment rate was something like $23+.. why would anyone sell their old lawn mower for $50 if you're getting $4000 to stay home? Why work painting houses for $4k a month when you got $4k to sit home. Magically everything cost double or more instantly... I wonder why.

So this certificate thing was the insurrection?

And that is an exceptional example. For most modern wars or major conflicts it's nowhere near as bad as 1 in 3.
talldatethrow··on Joe Biden stands down as Democratic candidate
Do you really think it was an insurrection? Trump supporters are definitely in the gun owning demographics. Yet basically zero guns were present in the whole event, especially inside the capital.

To me that screams not an insurrection.

talldatethrow··on Do not factory reset your Pixel until at least 15 minutes after a system update
My Google pixel 4xl was working, doing some backup at 1:30am a few months ago.

At ~2am the massive ATT outtage occured that lasted several hours.

By 7am when I woke up the phone had zero sign of life, can't get it to charge or indicate anything.

Weird, I know phones break. But it broke while being untouched, during a rare long term outage. Still makes me wonder.

talldatethrow··on Heavy resistance training at retirement age induces lasting beneficial effects
Super slow is not static. It's about 8-10 seconds per rep.

Yes, it makes you look better and get stronger and healthier. It wouldn't work for a competitive lifter I suppose since that takes a lot of practice managing those weights, even if someone is strong technically.

Idk what regular person, especially approaching retirement age really cares about putting up big numbers. they exist sure like everything else, but I'm giving general advice not body builder or competitive weightlifter advice.

talldatethrow··on Heavy resistance training at retirement age induces lasting beneficial effects
I think active people should look into Super Slow one set training to complete failure.

Basically, pick the weight that you can do super slow, for about 60-90 seconds max. You should be at total failure at the end, but since the weight will be MUCH lower than 1rm, it's very safe.

I think this is a LOT more effective than doing exercises for sustained periods of time.

Someone once told me any exercise you can do for several minutes is just dancing. Not strength training. And from trying many methods over the years, I agree.

I've had friends that can squat impressive numbers try super slow body weight squats. They can do more squats with 225+ lbs at their usual pace than they can body weight super slow. Considering how much safer super slow body weight squats are (basically no risk) compared to 225+, I don't know why more people don't do it.

talldatethrow··on Why is Chile so long?
My gf is a trained educator too with two masters somehow related to education. She teaches 8th grade English but has also taught highschool.

She can't write or communicate at any level beyond typical hairdresser. Considering it's very hard to fail out of most upper level education unless you simply don't do the work at all, we really should stop giving people so much credit for just getting degrees.

It's what you do with it that matters and how you devote yourself on your own time that makes people great. And that's what the previous commenter was doing. Trying to give credit to some education system someone went through is taking away from the person that actually made something of themselves, almost always by themselves.

Side note, I graduated with a MechE degree from UC Berkeley. Decent grades. I can honestly say I learned almost nothing. I just did a ton of work they wanted. If I made something of myself in the engineering field, I promise it wasn't because of UC Berkeley.

talldatethrow··on How electronic ignition works and also how to make a spark plug play music
Most of my social circle is people that do custom crazy stuff with things with engines. 1000hp off-road trucks, jetskiis that do backflips, cars into the 9 second quarter mile, basically all installation and repair work done by the enthusiast themselves.

I know several people that have lost fingers. Two that have lost teeth. Two that have died along crashes.

Getting shocked by ignition systems is on par with stubbing your toe.

talldatethrow··on Ask HN: Those of you who've left the SWE world, what did you transition into?
I'd say that car sales is definitely one of the ones that don't require long term relationship building to be successful. Enough customers are putting in leads and walking through the door that you can make good money just working those.

But drama does and will catch up with you just the same.

talldatethrow··on Ask HN: Those of you who've left the SWE world, what did you transition into?
I was in car sales for a decade and quickly became top 1% (more like 0.2% really) in the country at it. I only did that after first wasting 6 months being a bit slimy first.

You can't really succeed in sales when you're dealing with all the drama you created by being slimy in the first place.

Eventually I realized I had to be as good as possible, and as responsive as possible, so customers would work with me for sure and not accidentally land with a bad salesperson elsewhere.

talldatethrow··on Ask HN: Those of you who've left the SWE world, what did you transition into?
Whether deals close or not is always technically outside your control.

What's not outside your control is how many deals you currently have working, so that you aren't reliant on one particular deal closing so that you have income in the immediate next few months.

Obviously the hard part is what happens when things happen to go your way and 3 deals close at the same time. But if you can figure out how to deal with that, most problems with the ups and downs of sales are taken care of.

talldatethrow··on Internet Archive forced to remove 500k books after publishers' court win
Sure they can, just like you could have your house taken from you and you could build another one. Why do your kids expect to get your house when they could build one too?
talldatethrow··on Internet Archive forced to remove 500k books after publishers' court win
People don't just write books to profit while they are alive. They write books so their families have something to pay the bills once they die as well. Books are hard enough to write and sell successfully. The few that make it are special for the families of the writers, and you want to take them.

You're free to give away your work. Stop telling others what to do with their work and that you want to take it because they died.

talldatethrow··on Booking.com ignores twofactor, lets everyone email-login without a password
You basically listed pretty trivial things, that like I said, let the construction industry operate on lowest bidder model in general.

As an example, I see bidding stats in my PM tool. On average my customers have a win rate of about 15%. One of the bigger companies doing $1.5 million a month of work has a 10% win rate. They are very good at what they do.. you can't half as your way into 15+ million of work a year, year after year. But they still win only about 10%. Because even though they are very qualified and liked, jobs go to the most competitive bid.
