talldan··on The fishy ingredient in beer that bothers vegetarians
There are a lots and lots of beers that are vegan friendly as evidenced by this much better list: http://www.barnivore.com/beer?vfilter=All

I think people reading this article will come away with a view that only 5 or 6 breweries in the UK are producing vegan friendly beer, and that' clearly not the case. Lots of breweries are doing it. It's probably fairer to say 1 in 2 beers are vegan friendly

talldan··on The fishy ingredient in beer that bothers vegetarians
It's why I said that it's not a full list. It's only 'approved' beers. There's loads that I could name off the top of my head not in that list.

This is a better list, which puts the number at closer to 50% if you use the filter 'England' and then toggle between Vegan and Everything: http://www.barnivore.com/beer?vfilter=All

If I said "a handful of breweries" to you, how many would you take that to mean? Words like these can skew meaning greatly, and are inaccurate. I'm criticising because it wouldn't take much effort to indicate with more skill exactly what the state of things is. It's a careless use of words, in my opinion, which I don't expect from a writer of a factual news article. I'd be ok with it in casual usage.

It's also a shame that you and the other poster are focussing on this rather than the fact that the statement is plainly wrong. There are clearly more than a 'few' veggie-friendly brewers.

talldan··on The fishy ingredient in beer that bothers vegetarians
That's a good point. It's called the 'trub' that's left at the bottom of the fermenter. So trace amounts are still present, I'd imagine.

How is it removed? Here's some details on brewing with Isinglass: http://byo.com/malt/item/645-fining-your-beer-techniques

I've only done homebrew - but I can't see how a powder, moss or tablet can be removed again once it has mostly dissolved.

Am I not allowed to criticise language usage?

I'm making two points, it's a poor choice of word, as it is conceptually poor, even bordering on nonsense. It's also clearly the wrong word as evidenced by the long list I provided.

talldan··on The fishy ingredient in beer that bothers vegetarians
Not sure I agree with that. There's the same attitude pretty much everywhere, its not any more prevalent in the UK. Lager the whole world over has the same sort of clarity.

In fact, the UK has a stronger craft beer and real ale scene than many other countries, so I'd say there are a lot of people here willing to drink a cloudy glass.

It's much more likely that the continued use of Isinglass is due to tradition, and no great desire to change an existing product/process.

Some of the language in the article is a bit strange:

"Its stance means Marble is one of a handful of breweries to be approved by the Vegetarian Society, something that's earned it a loyal following."

'Handful' is completely meaningless in this context. How can a brewery fit into a hand? The actual list is also quite long and by no means exhaustive: http://www.vegsocapproved.com/ProductCategory/Details/126?pa...

Especially when you consider a lot of craft breweries are using vegetarian friendly techniques for clarifying their brews.

It'd be strange for it not to be an ingredient. As far as I understand it's added directly to the wort prior to fermentation.
talldan··on Plottable.js – Flexible, interactive charts for the web
It feels complicated due to not using separate getter and setter functions. By splitting it into two functions the annotations could be reduced as well. I wonder what the reason for not taking that approach was.
talldan··on Plottable.js – Flexible, interactive charts for the web
My guess is that if you call it with a boolean argument, it returns `this` for chaining purposes. Otherwise it returns the current value of `_connectorsEnabled`. There are two declarations for the different usages, and then the actual implementation can return `any`. It is a bit strange.

edit - see also line 24, for the declaration of the usage without an argument: https://github.com/palantir/plottable/blob/develop/src/plots...

didn't know about that one, so thanks for the link! There's also a pcg subreddit, which might be of interest:

talldan··on Can a single car break a traffic jam?
When driving I've also noticed another phenomenon. When reaching the crest of a hill there's an optical illusion that cars are bunched together. From this viewpoint the driver can see more of the road and vehicles ahead. My theory is that this causes a momentary shock or panic, and it often causes drivers to slam on the brakes, causing ripples of braking behind them.

perhaps report them on github issues? https://github.com/facebook/draft-js/issues
talldan··on Apple’s declining software quality
The biggest annoyances for me are quite minor, but common occurrences.

Multiple password prompts, having to login twice after a restore, terrible multi-monitor support, lack of window management, unclear system prefs (or things have moved again since the last update), hidden options (holding the option key is so unintuitive) and shortcuts, networking tools are poor, weird update process, notifications blocking the UI of apps, strange finder UI.

There are a lot of UX issues that make it a frustrating experience.

I was a fairly late converter to OS X having used Windows and Linux before. I used to hear people berate Windows similar issues to those above, and I'm surprised on switching to OS X that things aren't all that different/better.

talldan··on Apple’s declining software quality
Rock solid for me on my OnePlus One, too. I've used it for some fairly long driving trips as well, where it's been running for a few hours.

Much of the persistent world-state in Minecraft consists of blocks laid out on a 3D grid, which are probably fairly easy to optimise. Compare this to other 3D games where there are lots of entities with dynamic physics that can move to just about any world position, and I think Minecraft would be the easier of the two.
talldan··on Setting up iOS continuous delivery with Jenkins and Fastlane
Setting up a Jenkins Slave is pretty easy as well, if it needs to run alongside an already existing Jenkins installation somewhere else:

talldan··on Flutter – Cross-platform mobile framework from Google
I gather you're already compiling it to JavaScript, though? Otherwise your audience would be very limited.

The decision to use Dart for this project seems to me like an attempt to find a lifeline for it. That's fair enough, but it could ultimately be a highly limiting factor and the reason it doesn't go anywhere. That would be a shame as cross-platform frameworks need to keep evolving to be more useable and performant.

talldan··on Flutter – Cross-platform mobile framework from Google
It's definitely saner to use something that has a community and traction. You definitely can't argue that Dart is a saner choice of language than JavaScript. After all if they'd chosen JavaScript, Dart could be useable via compilation. So would a whole bunch of other more commonly known and probably saner languages.
talldan··on Show HN: Rune.js – Graphic design systems with SVG in the browser or Node.js
It's a shame React Art isn't mentioned more (https://github.com/reactjs/react-art). I'm pretty happy with the results from it, and it's a bonus that it works on iOS as well as drawing to Canvas, SVG, or VML on the web.

It doesn't support some of the more advanced features of SVG, but that's the trade-off for wider support.

This worked pretty well, and good to see an API is available. I work for a company called Kahoot!, and we have a very similar approach for our learning games (https://getkahoot.com/).

I've noticed the company behind this is called n-dream - it looks like there's no relation to the games company nDreams, though a very similar name.

talldan··on React JS Best Practices
I'm intrigued as to why you think this approach is better than using a key? The 'shouldComponentUpdate' way of doing things means any changes to props or state on the component have to be handled manually, which can introduce a lot of non-trivial and overly complex code.
talldan··on React JS Best Practices
Do you have the 'key' prop specified on these components? React uses the key to keep track of a particular element. If you specify your own unique key, react will know that the dom representation of a component matches your react instance, and thus not replace the dom element when changes happen in a parent component (apart from if the component or parents are completely unmounted).

Without the implicitly set key, react creates its own index, so if a change happens in the hierarchy above your component, a new key might be given by react, causing the dom element to potentially be replaced when rendering.

talldan··on Tatsu: Standup Meetings in Slack
We use a bot - there's a standup channel and every morning an automated @channel message is posted, which everyone answers.

Not really sure what this product offers over that. The way each question is asked to each participant one-by-one makes it harder to parse if you're having a quick scan through.

talldan··on New Paypal gateway UI susceptible to spoofing
that's a good option - hadn't considered that approach.
talldan··on New Paypal gateway UI susceptible to spoofing
yes - as I mentioned above, it's impossible to do this in one step, though. It requires getting the url from a server-side call, and then rendering the link to that url. Since the pressure is on to reduce friction in the process, you can see why this has been reduced to using an iframe (which can launch seamlessly in a single button press).
talldan··on New Paypal gateway UI susceptible to spoofing
This isn't a new thing, it's been possible for a number of years to integrate paypal using an iframe.

Hands-up - I'm guilty of doing this. I hadn't really considered the issue before, but I agree it is a security concern.

One of the reasons developers switch to using an iframe rather than a separate window is due to popup blocking. Retrieving the url for a payment system usually requires making a server side call, so it's impossible to then launch a popup directly from the user action. The solution would be to require a second user action after having retrieved the url.

A complete redirect isn't always the best case for single page web apps, either. Thankfully, we're a bit smarter about deep-linking these days, so that should no longer be an issue.
