taligent··on Among Servers, Apple’s Mac Mini Quietly Gains Ground
As someone who uses Mac Minis for servers the biggest reason is value.

I can fit 2 Mac Minis in a 1RU. And that is a Core i7, 16GB, 2xSSD which is about 20-30x faster than what Amazon, Rackspace offers for the same price. Now throw in the fact that you can (a) send it back to Apple if it breaks or (b) sell it on eBay for nearly the same price it all becomes very compelling.

Given that I use a Java/Hazelcast/Cassandra stack I can simply add more Mac Minis to linearly scale with no single point of failure.

taligent··on Google is getting better at what Apple does best faster than Apple
Firstly, the car companies have been shipping for the last few years many of the key systems of an autonomous car. Even some of the cheapest cars can self park and auto brake in the event of an impending collision. Adding more sensors and better control systems builds on this.

Secondly, nobody knows who is leading the industry. But we know it's not Google since all of the car manufacturers have their own programs in fairly advanced stages. And due to the consolidated nature of the industry key technologies are shared within the groups. So if Google has no one interested in their technologies and they don't make cars then how will they ever lead anything ?

taligent··on Google is getting better at what Apple does best faster than Apple
Sure but you can just defer to the OS for the bulk of those services e.g. CoreGraphics, DirectWrite etc.
taligent··on Google is getting better at what Apple does best faster than Apple
No. Apple should take every competitor seriously no matter how insignificant. The rest of us however shouldn't.

And we are talking about hardware here. They have consistent failures in shipping hardware.

taligent··on Google is getting better at what Apple does best faster than Apple
You do realise that Google didn't invent self driving cars and that they aren't even leading the industry.

Mercedes Benz demoed the technology nearly 20 years ago and will be shipping cars along with Audi, Volvo etc en masse over the coming years. In fact every single notable car manufacturer has had their own program in place for decades.

Don't forget that they acquired YouTube, Maps, Picasa, Android and Chrome is a wrapper around WebKit.
taligent··on Google is getting better at what Apple does best faster than Apple
I think Apple should take every competitor seriously and I am sure they do.

My point is that Google has a history of being unable to ship anything properly. And until we see them do so and with a sizable profit margin then they shouldn't be considered in the same league as Apple. And the important skill is not making the laptop it's in the supply chain management.

taligent··on Google is getting better at what Apple does best faster than Apple
The premise is pretty stupid.

Firstly Apple does do services. They run the world's biggest media store, the world's biggest syncing platform and a semi popular email service. Sure they aren't perfect but they can be considered successes for the most part.

And the point about hardware is completely misguided. Apple's true strength has never been their ability to build a well designed machine. It is the fact that they can do it consistently and ship it on a scale unmatched in the industry. All whilst maintaining a huge profit margin.

Until Google can demonstrate that they can actually ship a product and do so profitably then nobody will or should take them seriously.

taligent··on This Is Why You Can’t Have Nice Things, Yahoos
Anecdote is not the plural of data.

If you don't have some correlation coefficient between working from home and lack of productivity then your entire argument is moot. My point with open source software is that there are plenty of facts on the ground that working from home does not necessarily equate to a lack of innovation. I was proving the negative.

If you disagree. Then provide some numbers.

taligent··on This Is Why You Can’t Have Nice Things, Yahoos
Sorry but have you EVER worked at a large company before ?

Because none of what you said makes any sense. There is no evidence that people at Yahoo are more or less "checked out" than any company. And it is ridiculous to think she can magically weed out those select few who are not committed to the company's mission.

And this underlying assumption that there is a relationship between working remotely and productivity/innovation is simply unproven. Especially when you realise that much of the innovation in our industry comes from open source projects where everyone is disconnected.

The MacBook Pro also has:

- Thunderbolt

- USB 3.0

- Bluetooth 4.0

- Optical In/Out

- MagSafe

- Better Trackpad

Not to mention a company with a history of great support. There really isn't any good reason to buy a Pixel.

taligent··on Chromebook: Ubuntu alongside stock Chrome OS
Why don't you just run Ubuntu in VirtualBox/Parallels ?
taligent··on Nginx vs. Apache in AWS
Optimized for serving HTTP requests at a high throughput.

What possible reason is there for Apache deliberately slowing that down ?

taligent··on Nginx vs. Apache in AWS
Call me stupid.

But maybe Apache shouldn't ship defaults that have poor performance ?

WebObjects never took off because of pricing.

And by the time they ported it to Java there were plenty of open source alternatives.

>Their store for physical goods goes down every time they make a significant change to the product offerings.

Many years ago it used to go down for technical reasons.

Now it is purely PR/Marketing. They get massive traffic spikes whenever it goes up and it instantly results in thousands of web pages going up with free PR. Why would you give that up ?

taligent··on Apple’s Deleting iCloud Emails That Contain The Phrase 'Barely Legal Teens'
Which is an example of a web service. Are you sure you're on the right web site ?
taligent··on Apple’s Deleting iCloud Emails That Contain The Phrase 'Barely Legal Teens'
Sorry but do you understand technology at all ?

iTunes Music Store is a web service. Whether it delivers HTML or XML to a thick client is irrelevant. It still needs to deliver a tremendous volume of them in addition to managing the downloads. And by and large it has worked tremendously well.

iTools/.Mac etc are all the same thing just rebranding. Ping was a product failure not a technological one. And GameCenter/iMessage use iCloud so not sure why you listed them.

taligent··on Apple’s Deleting iCloud Emails That Contain The Phrase 'Barely Legal Teens'
It really doesn't.

It is illogical to block just this phrase and not the many others that would be far worse.

taligent··on Apple’s Deleting iCloud Emails That Contain The Phrase 'Barely Legal Teens'
It depends what email account he sent it to. It seems like at least Apple and Google are both using F-Secure.

So it could be a bug in their definitions files.

taligent··on Apple’s Deleting iCloud Emails That Contain The Phrase 'Barely Legal Teens'
Apple does actually know how to run web services.

They run the world's largest media store and one of the world's busiest online stores in addition to iCloud. Just because MobileMe was a piece of junk doesn't mean they are completely clueless.

taligent··on Nginx vs. Apache in AWS
What do you mean what is the point ?

The obvious assumption with all software is that it is optimised out of the box.

taligent··on Apple’s Deleting iCloud Emails That Contain The Phrase 'Barely Legal Teens'
That's the thing though. Apple has never filtered emails before or even hinted that they would.

I'm going to take a guess that this is just a misconfiguration in the spam filters.

taligent··on Redshift Performance and Cost
SAP HANA would be one but it is basically in memory so very, vey expensive.
taligent··on Redshift Performance and Cost
Seriously can you and your ilk just please stop.

It's so exhausting to hear how much smarter you are and if we just educated ourselves we would realise the error of our ways. People who choose the technologies aren't stupid or masochistic. They understand their use case and the fact is that there are plenty of situations where SQL is suboptimal.

If it's too early for a NYT review then it's too early for anyone.

Scandinavian countries are also quiet small in size so you aren't likely to be too far from a charger in the event something does go wrong.
taligent··on Tesla says it lost “hundreds” of orders after New York Times controversy
He wasn't trying to find a gas station. He was trying to find one of the Tesla superchargers. And as we can see from the video below they are very, very hard to find (that giant structure is NOT the charger).

Musk deserves all that he gets. He overplayed his position.

taligent··on Why Yahoo's Decision Might Not Be So Wrong
I am confused why Brennen spent so much time to say so little.

Of course we don't know the exact reasoning behind the decision nor whether they have metrics to back it up. That is obvious and is the always present caveat whenever there is a discussion about a decision that people weren't directly involved in making. So we are always left to make judgements from outside the box.

So unless Brennen knows something specific he isn't sharing I am going to continue believing that either (a) this is a dumb decision which shows a lack of understanding about how software development works or (b) this is a smart way to reduce headcount without reducing morale.
