taligent··on Don't be mean, it's stupid
No we shouldn't be personal. Period.

What I've always thought set HN above other sites like Reddit is the quality of the arguments. At the end of the day we all learn and grow by putting forward our positions on various topics and issues and seeing what comes out of it. And those positions can and should be aggressively defended as need be. If you take it personally then clearly that is your problem and no one else's.

When we start attacking the person everyone loses.

Firefox supports H.264 on Mac via the QuickTime plugin.

Give us all a break. I am just as 'invested' in this as anyone else is.

I am critical of VP8 because I believe in companies like Google, Apple, Microsoft etc working together to define standards in the common interest of the consumer. Google's entire behaviour with VP8/H.264 as well as their FRAND abuse goes entirely against this.

Standards are good for everyone.

I have a higher karma than you in a much shorter time. So logically that means I comment on a range of topics.

I continually comment on Linode because I don't believe that companies that deliberately hide security incidents should be praised.

I don't have an anti-Google agenda. I just don't see why Google is actively trying to make life more difficult for consumers by promoting an inferior codec (in every way possible). I include Mozilla into that list as well.

I unfortunately am cynical and don't believe that in the presence of so many commercial interests that free and open is going to reign supreme. The odds are simply too stacked against it.

Instead I would much prefer to see standards made available under low royalty, FRAND terms. This has worked to great effect for WiFi, USB, Bluetooth etc.

But of course that is looking harder to achieve with FRAND abusers like Google around.

taligent··on Linode Nextgen: The Network
No with Linode its:

"Your instance may have been rooted. But we won't tell you what happened, whether it is fixed or whether it will happen again."

taligent··on Google licenses VP8 patents from MPEG-LA
Patents were never the reason for a lack of VP8 adoption. When you have the likes of Adobe, Apple, Canon, Microsoft and Sony firmly against it was always going to be a dead on arrival.

I honestly don't know why Google bothered to buy the company in the first place. Seems an odd place to assert a competing position.

taligent··on Google licenses VP8 patents from MPEG-LA
Pretty sure the handful of people who use VP8 aren't going to cause a PR problem for MPEG LA or its members.
taligent··on Google licenses VP8 patents from MPEG-LA
Well this is an interesting way to look at it.

Litigation is rarely a smart move for a licensing organisation. During the years wasted going back/forth during appeals etc the competitor has a price margin advantage which they can use to increase market share. It's not that easy to quantity that if damages are awarded.

And seriously you either need to put up or STFU. If you have some prior art that invalidates specific patents then speak up. Plenty of companies would be very, very interested. But I'm going to take a guess that you don't.

taligent··on Linode Nextgen: The Network
Err. Linode has pretty average performance compared to the SSD providers.

And during my time as a customer Linode was the worst out of all the VPS I had ever tried up until that point. Constant outages at Fremont and heard about the same at London DC as well.

taligent··on Linode Nextgen: The Network
Linode is great during stable periods but when there is an outage or DDOS they are completely absent. I was sick to death of waiting whilst my Fremont instances were down due to power issues and receiving no response from support tickets.

And based on their security incidents Linode is absolutely in the hobby box category as well. At least Amazon is PCI DSS compliant.

taligent··on Linode Nextgen: The Network
Please. Major upgrades happen every single day among the various VPS providers. And whilst it is notable it isn't particularly useful to most Linode customers. In fact 99% won't see any difference at all.

Had they actually decided to offer SSD based instances to compete with the likes of DigitalOcean then we would have something interesting.

Also this is a terrible way for a company to earn trust. It should be earned based on their behaviour during the bad times. And we know how appalling Linode handles those.

taligent··on I’m a Google Glass skeptic and think it’ll be the next Apple Newton
I've not once ever seen a person wearing a GoPro and I consider myself pretty active. And I can't fathom why anybody would be wearing one in an office, cafe, social or non-outdoor environment. And sorry but you wouldn't have a deeply personal or business conversation with someone who had a GoPro strapped to their head, right ?
taligent··on I’m a Google Glass skeptic and think it’ll be the next Apple Newton
The Pixel is nothing more than a featureless MacBook with a fixed web browser. If you think that is the future then you're in for a rude shock.

And you seem to be obsessed with the future and less concerned with reality. People don't need to check email, weather, time, ask questions so frequently that they need a fixed device on their head.

taligent··on I’m a Google Glass skeptic and think it’ll be the next Apple Newton
No. You just have to point a video camera at someone and potentially record their conversation. Do people have such poor social skills and lack of empathy to understand why Google Glass will make many people really uncomfortable ?
taligent··on An Embarrassing Bug in Mac App Sandboxing
Yes. You can report bugs to Apple:

http://bugreporter.apple.com

It is a web interface for Radar and all bugs are triaged by the dev teams pretty quickly. Unfortunately you can't see outstanding bugs or track their progress.

taligent··on Are Tokyo's Coffin Apartments the New Model For Founder Nests?
I have to say this really is gold-plated, A-grade blog spam.
taligent··on Namecheap now officially accepts Bitcoin
Well since we are living in a fantasy land why not McDondalds, Ferrari, Apple and Starbucks as well.
taligent··on Namecheap now officially accepts Bitcoin
> if it increases the cost of their goods/services in a meaningful way.

You do realise that credit cards aren't some new invention ?

The merchant costs have been factored into people's purchases for decades and there is no evidence it has caused any impact on sales. If anything the huge array of reward programs and partnerships e.g. with airlines has reinvigorated the huge of credit cards.

I just don't see anyone migrating away from credit/debit cards apart from fringe elements of society. Seems like proponents of Bitcoin live in their own world sometimes and treat the existing financial system as some competitor.

taligent··on Namecheap now officially accepts Bitcoin
Your logic is completely faulty.

Paying bills over the internet was easier and simpler than paying by check. Paying by credit and debit cards are easier, safer and simpler than using say Bitcoin.

There is zero chance that those cards are going anywhere. If anything the popularity of PayWave and other NFC technologies should see their use increase.

taligent··on Why I Don't Like Pair Programming (and Why I Left Pivotal) (2009)
I have to agree pair programming is generally a pretty awful way to do software programming. Inevitably the most extroverted, loudest person will dominate and it is these people that are often design the worst code.

Far better off having a design session with a team of other developers to agree on a preferred approach and then individually develop.

taligent··on Canon develops 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor for video capture
I have one of these and they are quite popular amongst amateur videographers.

They definitely give a cinematic quality to captured video.

taligent··on (Presumably) Apple engineer comment on Lightning AV adapter design
Why wouldn't they use H.264 and their existing hardware ?

Do you really think it makes more sense to decode H.264 on the device then re-encode it in another format and then decode that on the adapter ? Sounds slow, illogical and bound to introduce more artifacts.

taligent··on (Presumably) Apple engineer comment on Lightning AV adapter design
a) This is a connector from a mobile device to a TV. That is the primary use case here. I doubt anybody is hooking up an iPhone to any other type of display.

b) Why is there a second pass compression/decompression stage ? Isn't iOS outputting the compressed H.264 stream and the adapter decoding it i.e. one stage ?

c) Given that Retina displays by definition are the best resolution we will need and it is far less than 4K it is questionable whether there will be a use for 4K on mobile devices. Other than using your iOS device as a media player for your TV (very small use case).

taligent··on (Presumably) Apple engineer comment on Lightning AV adapter design
You know you can buy Lightning cables off eBay for $5.

And that the original dock connector first appeared in the iPod 3G nearly a decade ago. So yes today's devices will be in a museum. But the connector could still be in use in 2023 and beyond. Worth keeping in mind.

taligent··on (Presumably) Apple engineer comment on Lightning AV adapter design
Sorry but are you talking about the right connector here ? Lightning is for the iPod, iPhone and iPad.

Of course dual link DVI et al can do more than 1080p. They are all huge. Apple's needs to support not just today's thin devices but those for the next decade (iWatch ?).

taligent··on (Presumably) Apple engineer comment on Lightning AV adapter design
I might be really confused but why is Apple going to be in deeper trouble ?

Surely the future will be H.265 content which will have better quality for the same bandwidth. And it's unlikely that people are going to be demanding a higher output resolution than 1080p from their mobile device for anytime soon.

taligent··on Among Servers, Apple’s Mac Mini Quietly Gains Ground
Which country do you live in that doesn't have Apple retailers ?

Because it sounds like an amazing business opportunity.

taligent··on Among Servers, Apple’s Mac Mini Quietly Gains Ground
What is a "server" operating system exactly ?

Because there is nothing inherently different between CentOS on the desktop and on the server for example.
