takeda··on GitHub cuts AI deals with Google, Anthropic
So maybe that's the issue I'm having.

I spent may entire career trying to eliminate such code as much as I can, so then having copilot write code that I have to fix on almost every step. I frequently have to look for subtle issues and few times they sneaked through, when it produces correct code it frequently is often more verbose than my code.

takeda··on Upgrading Uber's MySQL Fleet
AFAIK the 8.0 release is one where Oracle breaks compatibility. So anyone considering MariaDB needs to switch before going to 8.0, otherwise switching will be much more painful.
takeda··on Rewrite cname uncloaking code to account for new ipaddress= option
I'm confused, isn't the Manifest V3 essentially just API spec?
takeda··on Redis users considering alternatives after licensing move
Can redis essentially be replaced with postgresql with unlogged tables or memcached (if you really wanted pure caching)?
takeda··on Is Tor still safe to use?
There is S/MIME, but probably biggest thing that stopped its adoption was popularity of web mail (so yes, Google and others).
takeda··on Is Tor still safe to use?
As someone who used Internet in the 90s I don't follow. There was almost nothing encrypted.

SSL/TLS was introduced for POP3/IMAP, but I don't think that was bad.

takeda··on DOJ claims Google has "trifecta of monopolies" on Day 1 of ad tech trial
> and in a handful of examples like the Soviet Union or South Africa, deregulation lead to outright collapse of essential sectors in banking

That sounds more like due to corruption. Also we are talking about breakups not deregulation.

takeda··on Nix 2.24 is vulnerable to (remote) privilege escalation
What's the difference between Nix and Lix? The website is still not entirely clear.

I mean as an user, why would I want to use it (besides avoiding this vulnerability)

takeda··on Learn Nix the Fun Way
Looks cool, great way to demonstrate what nix can do to a new person.
takeda··on Ask HN: What is the best code base you ever worked on?
I used month or two, because that's what OP used and that seemed ridiculous. Almost like OP tried to make a meme that s/he didn't experience themselves.

But anyway, I recently found code that I wrote 15 years ago. And when looking at it actually makes me feel depressed. It looks like something I would write today so I don't think I got much better.

But yes, I do have to look over it again to understand how it works as I forgot everything.

takeda··on Ask HN: What is the best code base you ever worked on?
This is the weird thing. I heard it a lot and I don't know if people just over-exaggerate or maybe I'm just forgetting things quicker, but I don't have that. I come to the code after month or two and it is the same as if I came a week or two. I also don't feel ashamed of it.

I also got compliments of my code in the past.

I do try to make my code readable and avoid being clever. Basically my rule of thumb is that if I need to write a comment about block of code what it does, then that code is too complex.

takeda··on Julian Assange has reached a plea deal with the U.S., allowing him to go free
This is the thing though. The cables were extremely embarrassing to the US and damaged international relationships, but they didn't really disclose any new crime that was committed.
takeda··on Secure Randomness in Go 1.22
I also noticed when I tried to search for "secure password generation golang" nearly all examples use math/rand. And to make things worse all of them initialize seed with current time just before generating the password.

This was discovered after I found in our code someone used math rand and was curious where they copied it from :)

takeda··on Superfest – The almost unbreakable East German Glass (2021)
Communism problem is that it goes together with authoritarianism and corruption.

Yes, you can get both of those things with capitalism, just look at Russia, but looks like they are more likely to happen with communism.

Authoritarianism is responsible for many people's deaths, while corruption is why things were so bad that it pushed for invention of this.

The reason why the glass is not popular right now is because we as consumers are perfectly fine with this. We let companies get away with it instead of voting with our wallets. Nearly all of us are guilty purchasing smart phones that won't last longer than 2 years, pre-paying for games when companies frequently stiffed us that way. Almost no one puts time to research which companies produce quality product so such manufacturers frequently go out of business.

takeda··on Superfest – The almost unbreakable East German Glass (2021)
More accurate title would be "How Germans invented unbreakable glass due to shortages caused by Communism"
takeda··on A leadership crisis in the Nix community
Right now they are not only attached to NixCon but Nix itself. People who hadn't heard about Nix now hear about Anduril.

Before this drama started I had no idea they even existed. Now I know they are a big Nix shop.

Those people who are creating the drama (and looks like they are a small minority) are trying to turn a tech tool into a social movement. This will kill the project.

takeda··on YouTube's Legal Team sent me a letter [video]
For the user, yes, the experience is largely the same, Vanced also has nearly the same UI, but YouTube/Vanced is very likely using a proprietary API, which makes it much easier to argue that TOS was violated, and that's what we are discussing in this thread.
takeda··on YouTube's Legal Team sent me a letter [video]
Their app is more comparable to NewPipe, they both were written from scratch.

Vanced is a hacked original YouTube app and made to be more user friendly.

So I was able to set up a machine with configuration management (saltstack) + barman[1] + repmgr[2] and the maintenance was comparable with RDS.

This was in 2017 and I would expect better tools available. This was on premises though, there were also Wal-E and later Wal-G that were more cloud oriented, although looks like barman also can now use S3 and equivalent.

takeda··on Tesla failing to deliver Semi-trucks on time to PepsiCo, Sysco, UPS, and Walmart
> Musk needs to come back to earth. OTR (over the road, long hauls of 1800 miles) is a non-starter and will never work with current technology. professional drivers can not lose 30 minutes every 400 miles on these routes to charge, they will miss all their drop times.

Would it help if instead of charging, do what you do with a toy car - replace the batteries?

They could then charge and be ready for the next truck.

takeda··on FCC fines largest wireless carriers for sharing location data
I don't know how it works in that particular situation, but usually government has its own auditors who can verify other auditor's work just in case they made mistakes.
takeda··on FCC fines largest wireless carriers for sharing location data
It should be set to 10x of all the profits they made from it to create a dilemma for the next time.
takeda··on 30% of Children Ages 5-7 Are on TikTok
As a parent, that's crazy to me. I'm hoping to keep mine away from social media for as long as possible. It seems to create all kinds of mental issues.
takeda··on A leadership crisis in the Nix community
So what?

The nature of Open Source is that Abduril can use it anyway and it is more whether Nix can get funding to help it become mainstream.

takeda··on A leadership crisis in the Nix community
The whole idea behind Open Source is that one does not discriminate.

As a Nix user I feel like those people who started this whole drama are actually negative to this project. They are trying to use Nix as a tool for their political goals.

I think the best for Nix would be to just move forward and ignore them.

takeda··on Businesses Are Getting People Killed
I was getting driver's license in Europe as well as US and both did not include freeway driving.

I think this is because actually driving on freeway is actually easier that on streets, the major difference is that if you get into an accident likely much more severe. And you're much more likely to get into accident during a test than after passing it.

What one needs on freeway is to have a greater confidence in their driving to not do sudden changes and drive around the same speed as the rest of the traffic. That confidence you get after you pass your exam and drive for a bit.
