taf2··on After OpenAI's blowup, it seems pretty clear that 'AI safety' isn't a real thing
I agree llms are powerful but they are not explosive - conflating the two is IMO even more dangerous
taf2··on After OpenAI's blowup, it seems pretty clear that 'AI safety' isn't a real thing
I just view the current gpt llm as a better search engine. It’s not self learning. It’s stateless when queried - so really the concern is we can create content on demand and create responses that intuitively make the llm very useful tool. Until it’s self learning I’m only concerned with how humans would use it just like any other tool in the hands of humans it can be both super useful and super destructive.

taf2··on Claude 2.1
since they don't have a share feature like some other open/er AI's it's difficult to compare. My favorite one to share as I recall was when Anthropic first released their chat UI. I asked it whether they had an API to which it told me know. After I shared the documentation for it's API to it it went into a forever denial of everything I asked it. I wish I still had the full dialog it was very funny.

noticing the same - what about with gpt-4 via api?

I had the same issue I take a new migraine medicine and side effect no hangovers anymore either. Two new drugs came out in 2018 basically allergy medicine. Tells the immune system don’t worry about certain chemicals in the brain and all is good. I get one extra day a week and bonus drinking no hangover

84% of the OpenAI team resigning? Is this true?

taf2··on OpenAI board in discussions with Sam Altman to return as CEO
It’s very hard to have too strong of an opinion here without knowing more about the actual conversations happening behind closed doors… on outside looking in this seems like a lot of drama and whatever the outcome- it looks super bad for OpenAI… if anything it’ll have the effect of a lot of us shopping for alternatives maybe that was the intention?
taf2··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
I just bumped our integration with anthropic to P1 above all other priorities - we need a backup plan. I'm also going to be putting more time and money into investigating ways of running a llama2 model on our own hardware financially viable compared to openai and anthropic.... not sure but this is definitely the motivation i needed to see openai could be gone tomorrow.
taf2··on Ask HN: How are you using LLMs or ML to improve your SWE?
I treat like google. I ask it a question , unlike google I can continue to ask it follow up questions about my previous question. I find it better for complex problems then simple questions. It’s like a second brain you can outsource things too that u can normally do but would take longer .
taf2··on Censorship in ChatGPT (Ask for Matthew Sag.)

taf2··on Ask HN: Coolest thing you learned in 2023?
Chatting with an AI is a more productive way of finding answers then googling for them.
taf2··on Major outages across ChatGPT and API
It's really not that different - customers can ask questions about conversations, phone, text, video and typically use that to better understand topics, conversions, sales ops, customer service etc...
taf2··on Major outages across ChatGPT and API
We were able to failover to Anthropic pretty quickly so limited impact. It'll be harder as we use more of the specialized API features in OpenAI like function calling or now tools...
taf2··on Verizon, AT&T customers sue to undo T-Mobile merger
It wasn’t twilio it’s driven by the monopoly organization- the campaign registry.
taf2··on Verizon, AT&T customers sue to undo T-Mobile merger
T-mobile was the main driver for all the user fees against every smb in the US though… IMO they did the most damage to text messaging as a reliable method of reaching a customer…. Telco industry is massive so yes break them all up
taf2··on Verizon, AT&T customers sue to undo T-Mobile merger
The main thing in mind that it did do is cause massive fees and restrictions for businesses to send text messages. The idea is this is to reduce spam. However it has fees and effectively was like this:

Hey smb, we see you send notifications to your customers . It’s be a real shame if those messages stopped delivering to your customer . Good thing you can pay us a brand registration fee just $50 and oh for each type of message a recurring $10 fee.

It wasn’t a price hike to consumers directly but really was mob style shake down.

taf2··on New models and developer products
Yeah I still see a chat bot being able to look for related information in a database as useful. But I see it as just one of many tools a good chat experience will require. 128k context means for me there other applications to explore and larger tasks to accomplish with fewer api requests. Better chat history and context not getting lost
taf2··on New models and developer products
ah that's really great thank you
taf2··on New models and developer products
Does this mean OpenAI tts is available via api? I saw whisper but not tts - maybe I’m missing it?
taf2··on New models and developer products
I got access to Claude 2 - it’s really good and have been chatting with their sales team. Seems they were reasonably responsive- but overall with OpenAI 128k context and price anthropic has no edge
taf2··on We are investigating reports of degraded performance

taf2··on How do you get APILayer to stop billing you?
I did this to sprint in 2002 because they refused to let me cancel my contract as I was switching to AT&T. I spent 2 hours on a call being passed from one agent to the next. I decided to just call my bank and stop payments. In 2020 or 2019 right before the t-mobile merger I decided for work I wanted a back up mifi device so I walked into a sprint store. The manager eventually came out and told me they can’t do business with me because of a bad credit issue. So at least 15 years later and I was like damn oh yeah I remember I couldn’t cancel my service … so I got myself a t mobile mifi instead as backup. Still amazing to me - I even remember a big lawsuit over their cancellation policy…
taf2··on Ask HN: If you were to build a web app today what tech stack would you choose?
I’d start with rails. It stays out of the way while providing all the core features necessary to grow.
taf2··on Google to invest up to $2B in Anthropic
I hope anthropic improves their api with this money. Having usage information from OpenAI is very nice. Their ai is really good just need to improve their features to support commercial usage

taf2··on Ask HN: Postgres vs. MySQL in 2023?
Been using MySQL for 20 years. It’s come a long way. What I most appreciate is the replication story with galera cluster, for the last 12 it’s provided us an incredibly stable core for our production system. Few years ago we did some testing with timescale extension to postgrsql and I was very impressed with the single node scalability. We had a hard time with vacuum but I’m sure enough time we’d figure it out and it could be a great solution. In this day I think you can’t go wrong with either solution. Both have an incredible community of documentation and support.
