tacticus··on Windows for Linux Nerds
When did this change? as my home machine required me to move to insiders for WSL just on the weekend. (also the volume of spam they are sending to me now :|)
tacticus··on Texas Uses More Energy Than Any Other State
Where i grew up i knew someone who built a safari roof over their house. (the name comes from the vented double top that was an option on land rovers) They stuck whirlybird vents at the apex with a controllable iris. Adjustable Louvres with seals were placed around the edges of the second roof.

These allowed the venting air to be shut off in winter and opened in summer. giving you great insulation or ventilation. Combined with the many other things they did (vines in front of walls for summer heat blockages, A well populated garden of low water plants, good insulation everywhere, a white painted roof and double glazed windows) meant that for most of the year no active cooling or heating was required.

And this was a place that commonly sees winters with lows of -10 and summers with periods of +35 as the nightly low (daily maxes are +40 for 2 to 3 weeks at a time (Air drying clothes in summer generally took less time than hanging them out. :| ))

Much nicer than the typical house in central Australia.

tacticus··on South Australia teams with Tesla, Neoen to build world's biggest Li-ion battery
So what were the causes of the queensland outages with their coal?

It was transmission tower failures that took out the network for the significant outage.

Really hot days only need a very short time of power to cover the 4 to 6 PM sort of time before the temps drop.

Not a factory. This is a battery stored peaking power plant.
tacticus··on Paul Allen's new rocket-launching plane
Landing weights are usually a bit lower than take off weights due to the extra shock on landing.

for example the a340-600 has a MTOW of 380 tons but a Max landing weight of 265 tons. Just a bit of a difference.

Could always dump fuel on the way back.

It's probably a new variant of civil forfeiture for the TSA. They just claim you never checked it when grabbing it.
tacticus··on Site Reliability Engineering
Mine has most of that. before i started it was 6 months between alerts. 1 day off and 1.5 to 2 times the alert period and recovery period with good mins and good people.

the only downside is a small rotation (3 people 1 week each) and some serious scaling issues which have made the pervious few months much worse than earlier ones. though we also have management buy in to fix the less than good parts.

The current chief of the Australian army has a great line on this.

"The standard you walk past is the standard you accept. that goes for all of us, but especially those, who by their rank, have a leadership role."

Except all the miners driving around in the "tiny" toyotas.
tacticus··on Scalable and secure access with SSH
You have a panic room/war room or etc. Somewhere with significant physical security and dedicated ports that skips the bastion entirely. You might have to go for the axe method in getting into the room during an incident but you can if need be.

That doesn't seem very simple to me.

Don't forget the comment after the newer patch

"New test patch up with improved protection against irrelevant infosec anklebiters"

from their now protected twitter account.

tacticus··on Mosh: the mobile shell
Juicessh has implemented mosh but stops just a bit too soon.

it would be great if they could support suspending a mosh connection so that you can have a resumable connection without having to have the radio on all the time.

It's not really about stopping piracy though. it's about making sure they can sell licenses to manufacturers.

it's 428 days to ship 50TB of stuff on a 10Mb/s pipe. 5 days if you have 1Gb/s

This assumes you get perfect utilisation of the connection (which never happens) so i would probably round up to 450 to 500 days on a 10Mb/s pipe

tacticus··on Early Impacts of Let's Encrypt
I've been thinking about grabbing the last release of ngrok and some internal setup of lets encrypt or just wildcard to run something like that.
tacticus··on Go 1.6 is Released
Doesn't tools like goconvey solve the automated testing side of stuff (at least for running locally)

iirc the workflow with that is change a file and process will rebuild and test it.

I'm doing much the same as you. command line tools for linux, windows and os x and really like go for that use case. the incredibly easy distribution of the final tools make life awesomely easy.
tacticus··on Nest Thermostat Glitch Leaves Users in the Cold
Why not (and i realise that this is a dirty horrible hack) isolate those devices to their own dedicated virtual ap and isolated network. that way you get to restrict what they can talk to, what can talk to them and the keys that everyone else uses.

this also allows you to finally get around to rolling out eap so the scourge of shared wifi keys can die out :)

tacticus··on Go 1.5.3 released to address security vulnerability
Thankfully it's rather trivial to do.
