tacotime··on I tried out-training my diet for 18 months
The wiki article has some more info. This sentence does seem to indicate that the smaller glucose chains reassemble into larger starches in a crystallization process. "The glucose chains can reassociate into short crystalline structures, which typically involves rapid recrystallization of amylose molecules followed by a slow recrystallization of amylopectin molecules in a process called retrogradation."

tacotime··on I tried out-training my diet for 18 months
Likely referring to resistant starch- "Resistant starches are carbohydrates that resist digestion in the small intestine and move to the large intestine where they get fermented. Meaning, the fibers from resistant starches when broken down via fermentation can provide gut benefits in the large intestine."

If I was in incredible pain and wanted to end my own life but was not capable on my own I might ask a close friend to help me with that. If that friend had enough empathy to help me fulfil my hypothetical wish then they would be a murderer, but a kind and helpful one.

edit: maybe we want to define murder as killing someone who does not want to be killed. I would ask what you have to say about the "trolley problem". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trolley_problem

Reverse Osmosis water filter. It's turned me into a water snob and I never want to go back. It improves the quality of a lot of things that I cook including like coffee and pasta and it automatically/effortlessly improved my hydration because water just tastes good now. I've used Brita filters and the like and they just do not compare.
tacotime··on Our Chrome Extension Is Safe
If this is not in the MDN refs anywhere yet, it really should be. I’ve been battling with web-ext for a week now after something mysterious broke that I’ve not yet been able to fix. I’m so glad you posted!

Exercise + socialize

Meetup.come and facebook groups can be a great resource. Try something that freaks you out a little bit.

I <3 acro yoga, group and solo mountain biking, and group and solo rock climbing. Maybe one more of those would work for you. Maybe you should find something else. Ultimate frisbee, geocaching, group fitness classes, group hiking. There are a lot of exercise + socialize options out there if you go looking for them. Do it and I bet you’ll thank yourself for it later on down the road. If you feel uncomfortable putting yourself out there and trying something new than just try to remember how uncomfortable you are with the thought that there might be something more out there for you. I bet that there is.

Very interesting! My immediate reaction/name for the feeling I had would be frustration. Your comment made me think about the possible connection between those two feeling and low and behold I quickly found this-

tacotime··on Mistakes to Avoid When Buying a MicroSD Card (2018)
I think a more likely reason is so that they can charge $150-200 for an internal storage upgrade of 200-250GB and push their iCloud service. This wouldn’t work so well for a manufacturer like Samsung who is not as differentiated from it’s competitors.
tacotime··on Google Plans to Deprecate FTP URL Support in Chrome
Whaaat? They came for the RSS feeds and I said nothing...

Bugzilla.mozilla.org is offline, here's a mirror: https://web.archive.org/web/20190520010425/http://bugzilla.m...

and relevant quotes posted there (a year ago!): "I think we should mark this bug as WONTFIX. We have a vague plans of deprecating FTP completely in Firefox, there is no point in adding more code in this area." "Since we (sooner or later) would like to deprecate FTP completely, we should not add more code in that area to our codebase."

tacotime··on Hedonometer
I think the effect you're describing is real, but... I turned off all of the days except for Saturday and Monday and it was interesting to see that with few exceptions (and those exceptions laying mostly around holidays), Saturdays were rated as having a higher "happiness" than Mondays.
tacotime··on Bamboolib – A GUI for Pandas
I was going to post and ask about an estimated release date, little did I know it would be an artificially imposed one. I was sign up number 900 something. What happens if you guys never hit 10k signups? Is it just never going to be released? The github repo has 200 stars but it’s just a few stub files... this looks like a marketing campaign for a fantasy product and now I’m wishing that I’d used a throw away email. Am I missing something? Is the code for this actually available somewhere?

tacotime··on Lawsuit: Autopilot didn't prevent Model 3 from driving under semi at 68 MPH
If an overpass is falsely identified as the broadside of a truck, even a very small percentage of the time, then sudden breaking in the middle of the road would be very dangerous. Also, from a PR standpoint, I think there would be many articles about how AP caused a fatal accident rather than merely failing to prevent it...

Oh, good point about pain in dreams! I have also experienced this. I used to have a lot of lucid dreams, where I was often aware of being in a dream. I somehow hurt my left shoulder and was suddenly in excruciating pain. I woke up and my shoulder felt just the same as in the dream, very bad. I quickly examined myself for injury and finding nothing, the pain very quickly went away. I guess I cannot say for sure that it was not physical pain leaking into imagination land but that is certainly not how it felt.

This is already a widespread problem for prisons, so you are correct.

https://youtu.be/BezZxQF2pRw

“There’s not a prison not fighting this issue in the country,” says Sean Ferguson, New Technology Project Manager at Georgia State Department of Corrections. “If they say they’re not facing it, they’re just not admitting to it. So it is an issue.”

"The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I'm saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin. And then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did."

I just bought one... What did you use as a variable speed switch? Something like a Lutron Credenza Plug-In Dimmer? I don't know if the buffer is 2 or 3 prong and I'm having trouble finding a 3 prong dimmer that is not remote controlled.
tacotime··on Animals are no less emotional than we are
My daughter killed a small rabbit when she was 4 year old. I was not there but the story is that mom tried to take it away from her and she got overly violent trying to snatch it back out of mom's hands. Clearly she did not have the bunny's welfare in mind in this moment or she would have been more gentle. I don't see a difference between her actions/motivations and that of an overly rambunctious puppy. In general, my daughter is a very kind, compassionate, caring person.
tacotime··on Animals are no less emotional than we are
I've put a road kill deer in my trunk, brought it home, strung it up under my deck and butchered it by myself in the night. I will tell you that was far more emotional for me than any shot I've ever taken with a rifle or shotgun.

The butchering can certainly be more emotional that the killing... it might 10 seconds to grab an axe and swing and then at least 30 minutes to cut the skin and pull it off of the body, to cut the body cavity open and to slice out the internal organs. It feels different than say preforming an autopsy in biology lab... you might have this moment as I have where you realize that the story you tell yourself, that you're a killer with a higher purpose, is just that -- a story. It doesn't make the animal you murdered feel any better about the fate it met at your hand. I would guess it is a significantly different feeling in cultures where a large portion of the population kill what they eat. Even here where I live, in rural Pennsylvania, people will often look at you like you're a sociopath if you tell them you killed and skinned and ate any animal other than a deer, and yet, the first day of hunting season there were often many empty chairs in school because dad wanted to take his kid out to celebrate a time honored tradition. Those kids don't often cry when they kill their deer, they often feel an overwhelming sense of pride. And then they pay a processor $50 so that they don't have to do the hard dirty work themselves.

tacotime··on Mammalian Near-IR Vision Through Injectable, Self-Powered Retinal Nanoantennae
This is caused by a tech called Second harmonic generation, or frequency doubling.

"A process in which two photons with the same frequency interact with a nonlinear material, are "combined", and generate a new photon with twice the energy of the initial photons. In some cases, almost 100% of the light energy can be converted to the second harmonic frequency. These cases typically involving intense pulsed laser beams passing through large crystals, and careful alignment to obtain phase matching. In other cases, like second harmonic imaging microscopy, only a tiny fraction of the light energy is converted to the second harmonic."

tacotime··on Show HN: REDasm Disassembler 2.0
Does anyone know why this disassembler might be a good choice over another open source option like Medusa or Radare?

I’m very interested in this stuff. I tried getting into IDA before I had a good understanding of programming and it was a struggle. I have been thinking about trying my hand at it again lately.

tacotime··on Learn Service Workers inside and Out with a New PWA Mastery Game
It is a "preview" and currently does not contain any information about service workers. I did not realize that until I created an account, invested some time clicking through a bunch (too many) dialogue boxes, and was presented with a message that part 2 would be emailed to me. I do not currently feel enticed, I feel a bit annoyed. Nice flash animation but the title promises to teach something and that is misleading and should be changed.
