Great, I applaud Arizona College. But anecdotes won’t move the needle on getting more men into fields where they are massively underrepresented.
ta9000··on [dead]
Just because you think it is a good idea to have more male teachers doesn’t mean there is a push to have more male teachers. If there were, we would probably have more male teachers.

> If they were to admit applicants without considering their sex, the best schools in the country would end up with incoming classes that have an even greater predominance of women than they already do. So, largely unnoticed by the public, they have started to embrace a solution to this supposed problem that is simple, effective, and manifestly unjust: affirmative action for men.

If the situation were reversed, I’m sure the author wouldn’t care. For instance, look at nursing, where there doesn’t seem to be any rush to get more men into the field.

ta9000··on DeepSeek uses banned Nvidia chips for AI model, report says
Yeah and Israel is using Microsoft technology to commit war crimes. Which is the greater evil? (Forgive the whataboutism, but the handwringing is real)
ta9000··on Solution to US debt crisis is severe austerity triggered by a fiscal calamity
Of course it is, most people like to tax others to pay for their own benefits. Almost no one in the US maxes out the cap, so for them it would make no difference.

> Get rid of the SS tax cap. You don't pay any SS tax above 180k ish, which seems silly. Get rid of the cap and let every earned dollar participate in the program. It doesn't feel like that hard of a sell.

No. Frankly getting a bit of a boost to my income at the end of the year is one of the few things I have left to look forward to. The program at best will pay out $0.75 on the dollar of benefits. How much is enough? Do more with less.

ta9000··on CATL expects oceanic electric ships in three years
If it were Elon Musk saying it, I’d agree, but this is CATL. They actually do the work.
ta9000··on Working from Home Is Harming Young Employees. They're Starting to See That
What’s really harming young employees is the completely unrealistic expectations being placed on them and the lack of hiring.
ta9000··on Apple Design Official Alan Dye Poached by Meta in Major Coup
Recruited not poached.
ta9000··on IBM CEO says there is 'no way' spending on AI data centers will pay off
“It doesn’t even have a keyboard!” energy.
ta9000··on 1GB Raspberry Pi 5, and memory-driven price rises
$5 in 2015 is worth $7 in 2025 dollars. Combine that with higher memory prices and overall increases in supply chain costs/tariffs, and I really don’t see $10 as being that bad.
ta9000··on Wealthiest 10% of Americans make up 50% of purchases and consumer spendings
I always see this for the US. Does anyone have data for other countries?
ta9000··on After my dad died, we found the love letters
> Suddenly you wake up in an aging body and your ideal life seems far away. As I get older I kind of understand the people who just flee their lives. Being saddled with responsibilities you never wanted you are forced into choosing to either strangle your own desires or be perceived as a terrible person for not fulfilling your societal obligations.
ta9000··on After my dad died, we found the love letters
And this is why society is going to shit. “Live free, no regrets” has to be one of the most narcissistic memes I’ve ever heard of. If a person commits to a partner and/or a family, they shouldn’t just hit the reset button because they’re bored or upset with how life turned out. Talk to your partner. Tell them the truth. It’s wild that this has to even be said. Obvious caveats for abuse or depression, but come on. Have some grit.
ta9000··on McDonald's is losing its low-income customers
If Dishoom would come to the US I would be so happy.
ta9000··on Microsoft's head of AI doesn't understand why people don't like AI
That of course isn’t what I meant. I make sure the code I produce isn’t inefficient or verbose.
ta9000··on Court filings allege Meta downplayed risks to children and misled the public
I mean, duh. They’re this generation’s cigarettes. Employees of Meta should be ashamed of themselves.

Edit: Meta employees, downvoting this comment won’t absolve you of your involvement in the largest child abuse organization we’ve seen yet. Look what your own company said about what it’s doing to teenage girls.

ta9000··on McDonald's is losing its low-income customers
The secret is to eat out less often and spend more when you do. Service is fantastic still at higher end restaurants.
ta9000··on Microsoft's head of AI doesn't understand why people don't like AI
Companies care about output, not code typed out by programmers. Most of the code I write now is generated, and I’m “writing” more code than ever, and better tests. Many devs I know are doing the same with generative AI. Why isn’t that a win?
ta9000··on Why top firms fire good workers
Every generation since WW2, American management gets dumber and dumber.
ta9000··on What US Tech Did to Ireland
Yes, when I think of counties lacking for revenue from tech companies, I think _Ireland_. How much is enough?
ta9000··on Microsoft executive closes replies after Windows 11 "Agentic OS" backlash
Luckily for us most modern engines allow for devs to support all three platforms. With more Linux users, game devs will have more incentive to put in the extra work.
ta9000··on Baffling Microsoft ad shows Copilot incorrectly identifying Windows 11 setting
That concentration risk is high no matter what the outcome with Microsoft stock.
ta9000··on Baffling Microsoft ad shows Copilot incorrectly identifying Windows 11 setting
Just installed Steam OS on a mini pc we use for gaming. One less windows device in the house, and the UI for desktop mode is perfectly adequate. It’s obvious how to change the text size, no AI needed.
ta9000··on Microsoft executive closes replies after Windows 11 "Agentic OS" backlash
Honestly, at this point if you’re still on Windows for your personal hardware, that’s on you. Linux gaming with proton is great. Most apps have web versions even.
ta9000··on Tehran Is at Risk of Running Out of Water Within Weeks
Oh no. Anyways.
ta9000··on Always be ready to leave (even if you never do)
I learned of stoicism in the last year and it’s been transformational for me.
ta9000··on Always be ready to leave (even if you never do)
I agree.
ta9000··on Sam Altman's pants are on fire
I don’t think they kind of comment belongs here.
ta9000··on Türkiye will not sell rare earth elements to the USA
On the contrary, I look forward to my tax dollars not going to play team America world police. Let someone else burn their young and money for a while.
