t3rabytes··on Apple HomePod 2nd Generation
I love my OG HomePods that I got on close-out at Best Buy, but both of them have given me near constant connection issues over the last few months -- excited to have something to replace them with. I much prefer the appearance of the Big HomePod over the (not-really) equivalent Sonos One.
t3rabytes··on New Mac Mini
No Man's Sky and a Resident Evil reissue are the two big ones currently that Apple is touting.
t3rabytes··on Apple Lightning (2020)
Agree, I do enjoy the feeling of plugging in a Lightning cable more than a USB C cable, but the spring-loaded mechanism wears over time and eventually there’s no snap at all.

Tencent has a minority stake, Tim Sweeney is still majority shareholder.
t3rabytes··on Driving Amazon’s electric delivery vehicle: Rivian EDV [video]
The same could be asked about the USPS designs custom vehicles, or why UPS has special package cars with changes from a default box van.

The other piece that I think is important and not regarded high enough is that delivering for Amazon is all-in-all a rough job physically and mentally (considering that Amazon is at the height of metrics-driven companies and will shit on you for missing your number by 1), so there is an incredibly high chance that they will use these to boost morale (and already are -- Amazon has different tiers of vans internally that drivers work through as they progress at the company [with the new Rivian vehicles being at the top of the tier list], so surely it's being used as some incentive -- "hey check out this new electric van that we want you to drive, it has heated seats and steering wheel ;)".

Plus, this is the type of company who cares about 1-2% optimization long-term because of scale. Maybe the lower step of the Rivian van causes a 3% decrease in hip-originated workers compensation claims, idk.

Also EVs are so much cheaper to run than gasoline delivery vehicles, especially if your routes are stop and go -- that's worse-case for a gas engine, but EVs love it because of regenerative braking.

t3rabytes··on Update on Supply of iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max
Did you read the part of the PR that says there are none to buy because they can’t make them?
t3rabytes··on How to build software like an SRE
I think they’re getting at something closer to feature flags?
t3rabytes··on Ask HN: Real-world anecdotes of MySQL at scale?
A ton of pain without a DBA team dedicated to it.
t3rabytes··on Tesla ordered to recall more than a million US cars
"Ordered" is a strong word, more like Tesla noticed a fault even though no customers had reported issues, and is going to force a software update to fix it.

Here's the actual Part 573 doc: https://docs.google.com/viewerng/viewer?url=https://static.n...

t3rabytes··on Ask HN: 2FA for Credit Cards?
US credit cards don't typically have pins associated with them anyway unfortunately.
t3rabytes··on Ask HN: 2FA for Credit Cards?
I get this occasionally with purchases via my US American Express card, but it requires merchant participation: https://www.americanexpress.com/us/security-center/safekey/
t3rabytes··on Collapse of emergency healthcare in England may be costing 500 lives every week
(Not) Luckily the US healthcare system is already collapsing without social medicine, so it’s not a great talking point. Staffing and supply shortages paint a bleak picture over the next few years.
t3rabytes··on Ford CEO Had Enough: Dealers Raising Prices Need to Stop or Else [video]
Dealer franchise agreements with the manufacturer also frequently include provisions that prevent the manufacturers from selling direct to consumer IIRC.
t3rabytes··on How Kubernetes Broke Git
I feel the title is incorrect. This isn’t so much a critique of Git, it’s a critique of the way Kubernetes-the-project uses it.
t3rabytes··on Show HN: Doxx Me – See how doxxable your phone number is
NC requires just a name to search the voter registry online, I think that’s state-to-state
t3rabytes··on New MacBook Air with M2
I’m quite in love with this machine. If my corporate IT group offered them over our top spec MacBook Pro options, I would take it in a heartbeat — I don’t care about the loss of compute power.
t3rabytes··on Google’s Android Automotive OS is coming to BMW cars next year
Yes, but Volvo/Polestar have just started the OTAs to add CarPlay support.

t3rabytes··on Bolt announces layoffs
lol the throwaway is 100% a troll, and had it not been for the "i'm a troll" description that was removed from their profile, this is what proves it
t3rabytes··on Milk alternatives produce up to 4.5x less greenhouse gas emissions as milk
Oatly and Califa have barista blends that get close. I've been using Minor Figures for a few weeks and have been enjoying it.
t3rabytes··on Milk alternatives produce up to 4.5x less greenhouse gas emissions as milk
The markup makes sense for lattes -- 12 ounces of whole milk may be $.36 at retail milk prices, but 12oz of oat milk is closer to $1.50 (see my other comment for the price comparison).
t3rabytes··on Milk alternatives produce up to 4.5x less greenhouse gas emissions as milk
There's still a rather significant cost difference between the two. In my local market, a one gallon container of whole milk is $3.89 retail, while the barista-blend of Califa Oat Milk is $4.39 for a one quart container (or $4.99 for a half gal of Oatly).
t3rabytes··on Anatomy of the Presidential Motorcade (2016)
Interesting timing on this post, I got stuck on the highway in Greensboro NC behind a police blockade on Thursday for what I can only assume was the presidential motorcade making its way from downtown back to the airport!
t3rabytes··on Update on StoreKit External Entitlement for dating apps
You can't initiate them from Android devices though. :(
t3rabytes··on Update on StoreKit External Entitlement for dating apps
I’m more or less tied to the Apple ecosystem because all of my family and friends use iOS (I’m in the US), which means breaking out of that bubble and being the person turning the group chats green (or saying “can we move to telegram/WhatsApp/signal instead?”) or saying “sorry, I can’t FaceTime. Duo instead?” is not worth the bullshit that comes along with it. The stickiness factor of these services is far greater than zero.
t3rabytes··on Replacing the scroll tracker on GOV.UK
usa.gov has gotten quite good thanks to work that USDS has done to standardize design language across the government (and help support agencies that want to adopt it), but getting other agencies to use it has been a slowwwwwwwwwwww process.
t3rabytes··on Omega Swatch Speedmaster
Sounds like these are in-store only :(
t3rabytes··on USPS Service Standards Maps
I use PirateShip all the time if I do want something shipped UPS, it's great.
t3rabytes··on USPS Service Standards Maps
One interesting thing I've noticed is that for my zip (central NC), originating and destinating first-class letters show different areas -- for example, for mail I send, none of it is scheduled for 2-day to Virginia even though I'm very close to the border (50 miles?), but for mail I receive, half of Virginia is in the 2-day zone.

I'm a huge fan of the USPS and really want them to succeed. For my personal stuff, it's really hard to beat Priority (typically I use the flat-rate packaging) for packages that need to cross the country in a reasonable time compared to the Big 2's "ground" services.
