t1o5··on Amazon announces candidate cities for HQ2
I second that about Montreal. The language laws are absurd. Getting a temporary work permit to work in Quebec is even weirder. The permanent residents of any other provinces cannot get health care in Quebec without Quebec's CSQ certificate which will take ages to get after you apply. The infrastructure is in ruins. Amazon will have a hard time getting skilled workers in Quebec than the rest of Canada.
t1o5··on Tea if by sea, cha if by land: Why the world only has two words for tea
Fellow Keralite here. I can relate to this. Chaaya in Kerala is tea made with tea leaves and milk. Black Tea is called "Kattan Chaaya", literally translates to "strong black tea".
t1o5··on MoneyGram Signs Deal to Work with Currency Startup Ripple
There are many remittance companies in UAE, Saudi & Oman where migrant workers send their salary back home to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal & Philippines. UAE Exchange being the major player there. Many of these companies might want to signup for Ripple because they can avoid the middlemen (what if Ripple becomes the middlemen ?) , thus more profits while keeping the fees low for customers and have rapid money transfer rather than waiting days for bank clearance.

The problem in implementing this is the origin & destination country should have legal mechanisms in place to operate this. Many low income migrant workers use schemes called "Hawala" , "Hundi" to avoid the fees charged by the remittance companies.

Maybe RippleNet can work in favor for both consumers and providers. Do keep in mind that RippleNet is not the same as XRP. The remittance houses will have to maintain Nostro and Vostro accounts for funding which I believe is currently maintained in USD. They can switch this to XRP to avoid those transaction fees and overhead.

t1o5··on Why a ‘paperless world’ still hasn’t happened
Whenever I fill up PDFs for my work visa to the US, I saw paperwork reduction act or something written on the PDFs. I thought it was to reduce paper usage or was it paperwork ?. But in the end, there is always a pile of paper. I would say in the last mile of the process paper is used. I applied for Canadian immigration fully online. But in the end they asked "signed certified photocopies", statements, declarations, consents, affidavits everything in paper with notary's ink seal and sign.

Maybe the laws has to change too. Many laws & processes still needs ink seal and signatures. A digital signature or a digital photo is not enough.

t1o5··on I’m Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Hi Peter,

I was into 3 years of my H1B and quit that job, left US. Can I recoup my other 3 years of H1B without going through a lottery in the future ?

t1o5··on Facebook’s New Captcha Test: 'Upload a Clear Photo of Your Face'
Yes all the currency exchanges around the world (at least the reputed ones) do this as a part of their operating country's AML policy. The exchanges are required to report the transactions which raises a flag to the operating country's central banking system too.

AML rules can be complex, but it also has trivial rules like if the occupation of a person and the amount of the money he exchanges do not make sense, the transaction will be flagged and reported to the central bank. The transaction will go through, but will be reported to the central bank using a webservice or as a monthly report. Its upto the central bank to investigate it further.

t1o5··on Joplin – A note-taking and to-do app with builds for desktop, mobile, terminal
I refuse to install any more Electron apps on my desktop.
t1o5··on AWS Fargate – Run Containers Without Managing Infrastructure
Is it the "AWS Day" or something ? I see 5 AWS related news in the top !
t1o5··on Radio Attack Lets Hackers Steal Cars with Just $20 Worth of Gear
Maybe the car can be driven away for once. The engine immobilizer requires the keyfob to be present inside the car for it be driven away. If the spoofed fob can trick the immobilizer, yes it can be driven away for once because the immobilizer check is not always "on". Its checked before the engine starts.

If it was, I could throw my keyfob out of the window on a highway and the car would come to a stop.

t1o5··on U.S. Bribery Case Sheds Light on Mysterious Chinese Company
How does this gratify one's intellectual curiosity ?

As per the guidelines:

On-Topic: Anything that good hackers would find interesting. That includes more than hacking and startups. If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity.

Off-Topic: Most stories about politics, or crime, or sports, unless they're evidence of some interesting new phenomenon. Ideological or political battle or talking points. Videos of pratfalls or disasters, or cute animal pictures. If they'd cover it on TV news, it's probably off-topic.

t1o5··on Who Filters Your News? Why We Built Gobo.social
If I understand it right, gobo uses twitter's and facebook's APIs using user's access token to fetch the results and applies filter to it.

What if the feeds from the APIs are already conditioned/personalized for the user ? I didn't sign up for gobo because I don't have a twitter or facebook anymore. I left these social medias for the very reasons that Gobo is trying to solve.

t1o5··on Lyft's first expansion outside the USA in Toronto next month
I would use Lyft or Uber in Toronto, whichever is convenient at that point of time. If you start to boycott companies which are not ethical in doing their business, well almost all companies are. Lets start with Amazon with their sweat shop warehouses, Garment manufacturing outsourced to workers in Bangladesh working in deadly conditions. No corporations are saints.
t1o5··on H1-B Administrators Are Challenging an Unusually Large Number of Applications
There are also cases of applying "future green cards". That is, applying for green cards when the beneficiary is residing in India, or working with another employer in the US.

These kind of body shops which are setup solely for applying future greencards are prevalent in New Jersey. They have their back offices in Hyderabad India.

t1o5··on USCIS is challenging an unusually large number of H-1B applications
ex H1B here. I left US because of this broken system. There are many bad apples than good ones utilizing the H1B system. Indian bodyshops, one room consultancies all over New Jersey. Even companies like Sprint,Walmart,TR,Garmin,BOFA,Chase,Visa,AMEX, they all game the system and exploit H1B employees because of their situation. There are a lot of fake payroll running firms too which keeps the fake H1B employee's status valid. There are firms which apply for "future greencards" while the beneficiary is not even physically present in the US.

Even many non CS graduates faking their resumes as CS ones and applying for "specialized" positions in IT. I had enough of this and left US and immigrated to Canada for good because I am pretty sure that my future will be affected by these bad apples gaming the system. I do not like Trump personally, but he is right about the H1B immigration system.

If H1B system is a lottery, then why is it called a "skilled visa" ? H1B should be merit based so as to weed out the bad apples and body shops gaming the system.

Probably I should write a book on "How to game the H1B system and get away with it". The book will be an eye opener for this broken skilled visa system and its loopholes.

t1o5··on India's Nuclear Scientists Keep Dying Mysteriously (2013)
This one pretty much sums it up

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15572321

t1o5··on India's Nuclear Scientists Keep Dying Mysteriously (2013)
The so called first world countries, its media, and its people, with good encouragement from certain sectors in the west, often confuse themselves with the world. US fears and dislikes loss of power and being irrelevant in Asia Pacific. The public digests news from these media houses and resonate the same elsewhere.

Among the state and non state actors, China is deeply disliked by global journalists too. It is also deeply disliked by Human Right Propagandists/Upholders, and the so called "global civil society on the internet". The problem is that these people have an ultra large impact on the perception because these are the people who control media, and a general person's access to information. They have abject monopoly over access to knowledge, and are deeply ideological. So much so that, these people are often found lobbying the United States and on the internet forums for policies that may harm the world. But they have huge power in Western discourse, and if they get pissed, they will start a whole ideological parade against their perceived nuisance. For US, it is simply their loss of influence that they are worried about.

The biggest people, and the most vocal, which leads to this perception, are the Global Civil Western Society, who just can't tolerate a state like China's to succeed. It is against their almost fanatically religious form of worship for some ideas, systems, and ideologies most of them tend to be under the guise of pro humanitarian but in reality is borderline jealousy and the fear of losing out. This also should be read in tandem with the fact that this is the very same society which supports the NRA, African American suffrage etc.

A similar phenomenon happened in the 1980s and 90s with Japan. The United States, not the world, was desperately concerned that Japan would not just pass over them in the future, but had already done so economically and culturally. The American mindset is extremely fickle, superficial, paranoid, and shortsighted when it comes to the possibility of foreign rivals. They just cant stand the very thought of competing in a global economy.

t1o5··on India's Nuclear Scientists Keep Dying Mysteriously (2013)
Just watch/read non western news I guess ?
t1o5··on India's Nuclear Scientists Keep Dying Mysteriously (2013)
The very mention of it irked the hornet's nest.
t1o5··on India's Nuclear Scientists Keep Dying Mysteriously (2013)
Though this does not appeal to the pro west crowd. If you have noticed, recently there is this anti China sentiment floating around on the internet and even on hackernews as well. This IMO is purposefully engineering to make China look bad, because they have had huge progress lately. China has effectively blocked all these social conditioning tactics from their population by wielding a greater control over the internet. It is effective and it is right for their progress as a nation.

If India starts to make progress, India will also be targeted. In a country divided by many languages and cultures, India is very vulnerable for social conditioning. The case of missing nuclear scientists is one of them.

t1o5··on India's Nuclear Scientists Keep Dying Mysteriously (2013)
Not only India's. Any developing country's nuclear scientists are either missing, given citizenship in a first world country or "went abroad" for research. There are many actors who do not want developing countries to progress in anyway. Be it nuclear, social or economic.

China is a good example in resisting these warfares/sabotages by foreign actors. They have effectively controlled foreign actors in meddling with their social & economic aspects (controlling fake news, social engineering by controlling the internet). Supporting homegrown technology companies than foreign ones. India should follow the same.

t1o5··on Ask HN: How do you measure performance of your client-side application?
Oh no Taleo, the corporate ATS blackhole where resumes go to die. I rather not apply with companies that use Taleo for various past bad experiences. The first being the resume and all the details that I type in Taleo goes into HR oblivion. The problem of job applicant tracking & recruitment is not yet solved.
t1o5··on Consul 1.0 Released
We are a Java shop and use Consul (as a docker container) for our service discovery. Spring Cloud Consul plays well with Consul. The REST APIs are what makes Consul stand out. We have an in-house monitoring service querying consul apis for service removals & healthy service counts and send an alert if there are no more healthy services, so that our docker can spin up one just in time.

Another feature that we use is the KV configuration dynamic reloading. So all your yml configurations are in Consul and can be updated and propagated to all of your services on the fly.

Now the problem we face is Spring Cloud Consul project is maintained by a very few people, so if there is an issue, we have to workaround than waiting for a fix.

t1o5··on Ask HN: Are Glassdoor reviews a reliable indicator of a company's culture?
I do think reviews are reliable source of current situation of a company, I trust negatives ones more than the positives. Its not just for glassdoor but for any reviews that you see on yelp, google or fb. I sift through the negative reviews and try to find a common factor in the reviews, that would be a way to validate the review.

I trust negative reviews more because if I had a good experience, I don't have any incentive at all to login to a webpage, create credentials if its needed and then go through the myriad of steps to post a positive review. But on the other hand, if I had a bad experience, the only way to vent it out is by giving them a bad review. I am willing to go through the hoops of signups and surveys so that I post that one bad review about the service. There is an incentive for me there.

Tailpiece: There are many services that you can purchase to write positive reviews for your company/service. The trend to identify this is that whenever there is a negative review, it gets buried by a bunch of near 5 star positive reviews, mostly with a one liner review text.

t1o5··on Ask HN: What non-work task have you automated?
Yes. SINP in short.
t1o5··on Securing Microservices
Like a revocation list of JTIs in an in-memory distributed cache to be checked by the edge service, yes not a bad idea, though there is a cost involved there.
t1o5··on Securing Microservices
The article has pretty much summarized security, but did not talk about JWT revocation techniques. Some may argue that short lived JWTs do not need revocation and will expire and the refresh of the token can be blocked by authorization server. But what about long lived JWTs ? For mobile apps which logins once and keeps the login unless explicit logout. In cases such as those, how do we revoke a rogue JWT ?
t1o5··on Ask HN: What non-work task have you automated?
Which gives me this idea to train my loud music playing neighbor to behave. A sensor listens for his music to go beyond a certain level and triggers my Pi to play loud music back to him. Then stop and check if he has lowered his volume, else rinse and repeat. I know its evil, but apartments in Montreal are so bad.
t1o5··on Ask HN: What non-work task have you automated?
Pretty concise. I needed a loud phonecall, so used twilio free developer account for that.
t1o5··on Ask HN: What non-work task have you automated?
It’s express entry after provincial nomination. Once PR is given and landed, you are free to move and work anywhere in Canada.
