t1mmen··on ChatGPT Isn't Coming for Your Coding Job
Hard agree. I’ve been at this for 22+ years now, and GPT4 by my side has made me AT MINIMUM 2x as productive; on a good day, 5x.

The separation will very clearly be “legacy devs” vs “AI-powered devs”.

I’ve spent a tremendous amount of time thinking about how the problems should be solved on my current project — big picture, and small. Once the system design became clear, about 80% remains as “just write the damn code” type work. I outsource about 70% of that to GPT, while keeping my focus on the important parts; the right abstractions, modular and self-contained functions, good naming and function signatures, making sure it all works and makes sense in harmony.

I don’t care (too much) about the inner workings of every function, so long as the abstraction and usage of it is great (and well tested). Refactoring, if ever needed, is trivial then.

My overall work has never been better.

Anybody dismissing AI for any level of programming is doing themselves a huge disservice.

t1mmen··on Call of Duty enlists AI to eavesdrop on voice chat and help ban toxic players
We agree on the principle. I’m just pointing out that much smarter people than you and me have tried and failed to solve this for decades.

My best understanding is; this is human nature, and cannot be solved, only mitigated. Smaller scale and niche games do this with human intervention (server admins) and if the community is small enough, shame can work.

At a certain scale, it breaks apart. Toxicity unpunished leads us to the “toxic gaming culture” we have today.

Like you, I am horrified of the surveillance society being built around us. I genuinely wish there were a better way. Your OP gave me the impression that maybe you had an idea for solution, hence my follow-ups.

Barring that, in the context of gaming — where kids and teens spent a significant part of their lives these days — I’d rather see a non-optimal, opt-out solution that removes the toxic elements, so we don’t grow yet another generation of casual racists and sexists.

t1mmen··on Call of Duty enlists AI to eavesdrop on voice chat and help ban toxic players
Like what? How?

In my 25+ years if gaming, I have only seen it (mostly) solved in smaller/niche games where the community is small and healthy already (usually targeting “older” gamers), and when server admins are actively doing “their job”.

… or, with a similar system as is being utilized (Battlebits Remastered)

t1mmen··on Call of Duty enlists AI to eavesdrop on voice chat and help ban toxic players
> I'm not a racist, sexist, terrible, or bad person. Why do I have to be forced to be surveilled and monitored like this […]

I am not a racist, sexist, terrible or bad person, either. Why should I be forced to listen to that shit?

While I’m a huge proponent of privacy and against surveillance at scale, the truth is, neither of us are forced to do anything here. We can both turn off VoIP in these games.

t1mmen··on Call of Duty enlists AI to eavesdrop on voice chat and help ban toxic players
Battlebit Remastered was an eye opener for me.

254 player first person shooter with cross-team proximity chat sounded like a recipe for disaster, but they made it work thanks to heavy moderation.

After 50 or so hours, I’ve heard no more than two handfuls of toxic, sexist, racist remarks. The global announcements when the banhammer swings are a glorious deterrent.

I can’t enjoy myself in toxic games anymore, so I’m glad to see this development happening in the AAA space, too!

t1mmen··on HHS Calls for Moving Marijuana to Lower-Risk US Drug Category
As far as I understand, it’s probably a bit further out for psilocybin. Compass Pathways are the furthest along I believe, with Phase 3 reads-outs expected next year for treatment resistant depression. Unless it’s fast-tracked, 2025 seems more likely.

2024 can happen for MDMA, though. MAPS has completed (I believe) Phase 3B for comparing PTSD.

It’s happening, but slowly. I fully expect these wonderful molecules to be widely available in clinical settings within 5 years, including LSD and ibogaine (which seems particularly promising for addiction treatment)

t1mmen··on Source code for Quake 2 rerelease
Ooh, thanks for mentioning that, I’m ready to re-visit!

I wonder if jungle1 and teamjungle are ported? Those were the first maps I made for any game (and I had no idea what I was doing).

I fondly remember a conversation with a random person in a bar, about a decade ago. Somehow, they brought AQ2 into the conversation, pointing to my creations as their favorite maps (without knowing I made them).

That was a good feeling :)

t1mmen··on tRPC – Build and consume typesafe APIs without schemas or code generation
I’m also singing ts-rest.com’s praise these days. Admittedly a small project with <25 endpoints atm, but holy crap, I am saving SO MUCH TIME on implementations, documentation, and bug hunting.

I have separate packages (in a monorepo) for the “contract definition” and the “API implementation” (which is currently NextJS, but likely Express in the future — and the migration path looks like very smooth sailing)

Request/response validation, OpenAPI spec, fetch & react-query clients without any additional effort. Mocks for tests auto-generate based on contract definition as MSW. It almost feels too good to be true.

t1mmen··on Repeating yourself thrice doesn’t turn you into a 3x developer
Thank you, I appreciate you sharing some code :)
t1mmen··on Repeating yourself thrice doesn’t turn you into a 3x developer
Can I ask your stack/toolkit? Sounds fantastic!

I’m on my first project that resembles your description, and I _really_ like it (so far).

Auto-documentation is also a big plus, imo. Our “truth schema” also outputs OpenAPI specs, markdown docs, etc with zero added effort (past writing inline comments). Love it.

t1mmen··on Repeating yourself thrice doesn’t turn you into a 3x developer
That’s my thinking, too. I’ve recently been using ts-rest.com for a relatively small project at work (<20 API endpoints, NextJS frontend, Postgres). Its been such a joy writing the “source of truth” as API “contracts”, and having everything else just work. With zero added effort, I get fetch/react-query clients 100% typesafe. Request & response validation on the API layer (which can easily be moved from eg NextJS API routes to Express or another framework). OpenAPI spec. Typescript and Zod types. All of that for free, without repeating myself. I like it a lot.
t1mmen··on Personal relations as a manager
I agree with your disagreement.

OP says:

> And worst of all, as is happening to the friend I mentioned, you will have to lay-off people who don’t deserve it, just because the company says so. > > Good luck doing that if everyone in your team is your buddy. I learned it the hard way, the first time I had to fire someone.

Having had to do this a few to times, my perspective remains that I want to build strong, personal bonds with my team. Doesn’t matter where I sit in the hierarchy, people that connect and communicate well just work better together.

It absolutely fucking sucks having to fire good colleagues and workplace friends, but that’s a feature, not a bug. It should feel bad! That’s part of the human experience. If you make yourself mute to these emotions, you’re doing yourself a disservice in the long run.

t1mmen··on US approves chicken made from cultivated cells
I don’t think it’s available anywhere in-stores, but (a?) restaurant serves lab grown in Singapore — https://www.bbc.com/news/business-65784505

To sibling comment on price, we’ve come a long way in a decade;

> Ever since the first lab-grown burger - which cost a mere $330,000 (£263,400) to create - was unveiled in London in 2013, dozens of companies around the world have joined the race to bring affordable cultivated meat to the market.

t1mmen··on Neuroscience confirms that to be happy, you will always need something more
I think this is peak happiness for me; giving a little of myself, making a (big or small) positive difference for someone else. I don’t “get” anything back, nor do I want that, but it makes me feel good.

Everybody wins. My favorite game.

t1mmen··on What Makes a Hobbyist?
Thanks for highlighting these parts, I wouldn’t have read it otherwise.

Wise words. Humans appear to need resistance between themselves and the achievement of a goal/wish, else we don’t seem to give it any real value.

This example has stuck with me, from https://awesci.com/the-role-of-wind-in-a-trees-life/

> The major discovery from it was something they had never expected. The most interesting thing they learnt from it was the importance of wind in a plant’s life. Who’d have thought! > > In the biosphere 2 [without wind], they had trees growing faster than they would grow in the wild. Also, they found that these trees wouldn’t completely mature. Before they could, they used to collapse. Later it was found that this was caused by the lack of wind in the biosphere. And it turns out, wind plays a major role in a trees life. The presence of wind makes a tree stronger, it is thus able to mature and not fall down due to its own weight.

Maybe all kinds of life need some sort of resistance to thrive?

t1mmen··on Migrating from Supabase
Thanks for the tip, that sounds exactly what I’m looking for (outside of node ecosystem, but I’ll take what I can get)
t1mmen··on Migrating from Supabase
I hadn’t touched SQL for almost 7 years, but dipped my toes back in to build a PoC using Supabase. Despite some initial pains around RLS, I’ve grown to love it.

Sure, Supabase has some awkward quirks and issue, and author has some good points. But when it works like it should, it’s pretty awesome. I think of it as a powerful wrapper around solid services that make for great DX, in _most_ cases.

If Supabase could provide a great way to handle migrations and RLS, that’d be the biggest improvement to most people’s workflows, I’d bet.

I really wish I could just define my scheme, tables, functions, triggers, policies etc as typescript, then have migrations generated from that.

t1mmen··on Show HN: Ask Deeply, a social game for small talk haters
This is cool, thanks for making it!

When interviewing prospective hires, I am mostly looking for good people, with good intentions, that will work well in our culture. I love asking deeper/non-standard questions that are less about work, more about the whole human. I’m borrowing some questions from your deck :)

t1mmen··on Psilocybin 'promising' for depression
Most of the tickers are traded on Canadian exchanges (NEO, TSX.V, CSE). If you’re in the US, I believe Interactive Brokers (and others) will let you buy stocks at these exchanges. You can do all this self-directed, no need to involve a processional.

If your current broker doesn’t allow Canadian venture/OTC stocks, $CMPS is the only ticker traded on NASDAQ so far. $MMED is expected to uplist to NASDAQ in the near future.

t1mmen··on Drug decriminalization in Oregon begins today
There is significant research happening in this space, though most clinical trials seem to be happening outside the US. Canada is taking major steps towards psychedelics as treatment for depression/MDD, palliative/end-of-life care, PTSD, anxiety, etc.

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-00187-9 is one of the many, many recent articles on the topic.

t1mmen··on Show HN: Time Cop – A simple, private, open-source time tracking app
WakaTime is awesome, assuming you only need to keep track of how how long you're working on code.

Shameless plug follows:

timelyapp.com is similar to WakaTime, except it keeps track of _all_ the programs you use on the desktop, and for how long (MacOS/Windows only). Timely also tracks when you leave/arrive at work/home/other locations (GPS, requires mobile app). We can't claim offline mode, but all tracked "memories" are 100% your-eyes-only.

Timely is a time tracker specifically built for people who are bad at remembering what they worked on/don't log hours frequently. Sice Timely's "memories" are recorded to-the-minute, you can easily log accurate timesheets, even if you only do so once a month.

(Disclaimer: I work on Timely)

reselect has been magnificent to us (along with moving most fetching logic to thunks)

API shapes change and evolve, and mapping raw API shapes to components (through Redux) became a major PITA, real fast.

reselect solved all of that; we transform almost all data to a “view layer friendly” format before passing it into the components, keeping them as dumb as possible. We also moved most “view business logic” to the selector level: The check might involve user permissions, subscription plan, etc, etc, but the component only receives ‘shouldThisThingBeDisplayed‘. API shape/changes very rarely impact the components.

This approach makes it much easier to test in our experience. Business logic is tested without any concern for the components themselves. Visuals are covered by Storybook and ChromaticQA.

t1mmen··on Google Assistant Can Now Translate Languages on Your Phone
This kind of feature is typically most useful in a foreign country. Roaming fees is absolutely a factor.
t1mmen··on Architecting UIs for Change
We started using ~this selector pattern for timelyapp.com almost two years ago, and have found it tremendously helpful.

Anytime we’re reading data from Redux, it’s via a selector (usually a composition of multiple selectors).

For data fetching, we use a slightly different approach, but same principle: An xhrCacheBuster string that, when changed, fires a thunk action. Query params/payload is determined via a selector in the thunk.

We use similar patterns to “sign” expensive-to-render things, then compare the renderCacheBuster string in shouldComponentUpdate. Same with virtualized lists (named virtualizationCacheBuster)

t1mmen··on Ask IH: Which Tool Do You Use for Time Tracking, Expenses and Invoices?
Should be noted that Memory data is _only visible to you_; not your boss or colleagues. We're GDPR compliant, and don't sell, share or do anything nasty with your data.

t1mmen··on Ask HN: What software/service helps you be an effective remote developer?
www.timelyapp.com is worth a look for automated time tracking too. Timely can track anything you work on (not just code), is a complete “time tracker” package.

Disclaimer: I work there.
