t0mas88··on Apple reveals new AI architecture built around Google Gemini models
Sounds like Apple PR bullshit.

Unless Apple proves otherwise I'm more inclined to believe they're either 1. Using this to try and shape the DMA in their own interest (definitely not their users' interest) or 2. Doing something with the data that would not be allowed in the EU (also not in their users' interest at all) or both.

t0mas88··on Apple reveals new AI architecture built around Google Gemini models
The public version of Gemini is ridiculous. At least half their search "answers" are just wrong. If you then start a follow up chat the answers change but usually still half wrong.

Search would be better without the added AI hallucinations above it. If I want an AI answer I'll go and ask Claude, the quality difference is huge.

t0mas88··on I design with Claude more than Figma now
I use the same approach a lot. Before AI I also did this manually. First sit down with a user and just paper and pencil, then hack together a frontend POC / demo, have them play with it and adjust until it works as they wanted.

For me building a quick (not production quality) frontend demo in code was already often faster than getting the right interaction working in Figma. And it allowed to make it fully interactive so you can catch much more edge cases on the UX side.

Now with Claude Code it's even faster to build the throw away prototype. But not a huge difference since discussing with the users and thinking about how it should work is 80% of the time. Claude maybe halves the other 20% compared to quickly doing it yourself. Faster to first version, slower to iterate if it didn't fully get it.

t0mas88··on Codex just found a "workaround" of not having sudo on my PC
Give it access to an issue tracker with cli (github works fine) and put in CLAUDE.md to use that for "should fix later" issues.

Bonus is that you can make it look at the list and pick things up without a lot of instructions.

t0mas88··on Netherlands blocks US takeover of vital digital supplier
In the Netherlands the fine is 110 euro. But they can't usually ask for your ID without cause, so the risk is quite low.
t0mas88··on Netherlands blocks US takeover of vital digital supplier
Just like Dutch military air traffic controllers, they sit in the same building as the civilians but wear a uniform and get paid less.
t0mas88··on Launch HN: Runtime (YC P26) – Sandboxed coding agents for everyone on a team
I wrote a simpler version of this for Claude Code as open source if that's useful to you: https://github.com/smithy-ai/smithy-ai

It's doing context management in the same way, but adds a learning loop based on code reviews. Currently works with Gitlab, Forgejo and Gitea but happy to accept a PR for Github support or co-write it.

t0mas88··on Twin brothers wipe 96 government databases minutes after being fired
> In the space of a single hour, Muneeb deleted around 96 databases with US government information. He downloaded 1,805 files belonging to the EEOC and stashed them on a USB drive, then grabbed federal tax information for at least 450 people.

Maybe whoever runs infosec at that place should also be fired?

t0mas88··on Googlebook
No idea. The people that have no need to run real software and want a high end device probably have an iPad with a keyboard case. Those that want a low end device have a chromebook.

This thing will be killed early 2028...

t0mas88··on If AI writes your code, why use Python?
Same here, working with a team that knows Java, so I'm letting Claude write Java.

If I compare the results to another team that uses Python with Claude I see slightly better results on the Java side. Not because Claude knows that better, but because the tools are more rigid by default which creates more of a self correcting loop for Claude. The Python side has Pydantic, but it's a bit of an afterthought, while in Java you can't skip the type checking.

In the end you can do the same things on both sides, it's 95% a team/engineering culture difference. So pick the language that the team knows best.

t0mas88··on You gave me a u32. I gave you root. (io_uring ZCRX freelist LPE)
It could work for container escape?
t0mas88··on Rumors of my death are slightly exaggerated
Undeclaring someone dead is one way to fix it, but you could also issue a new birth certificate, SSN etc and have minted an entirely new citizen :-) free of debt and ownership, uneducated and unemployed on paper but somehow quite experienced.
t0mas88··on Bankruptcies increase 11.9 percent
These people mostly contribute via transaction fees, for Amex for example more than half of revenue is from transaction fees instead of interest. Unfortunately for the credit card companies, an economic downturn also reduces spending by the financially stable people. So transaction fees are also affected.
t0mas88··on I Got Sick of Remembering Port Numbers
Some browser functions only work over https, localhost is the exception. So if you change localhost:5173 to myapp.vibe it needs a valid certificate.
t0mas88··on Spain's parliament will act against massive IP blockages by LaLiga
You would do the same in a civil law country, sue the sports league and ISP. State that an "unlawful act" happened (blocking your service) and claim damages due to loss of traffic and the extra work it caused you.
t0mas88··on Soft launch of open-source code platform for government
Yes
t0mas88··on Waymo says can't avoid bike lanes because riders want to be dropped off in them
I'm not sure how this works in the UK, but over here in the Netherlands we have cyclists everywhere and a lot less drama. Here it's OK to stop on a bike lane and to merge onto it when turning right, but not to park on it. Merging means you give way to bikes first, then drive between them. And the other way around, if the bike lane is blocked, bikes merge into the car lane and cars drive behind them.

Consider it a two lane road, where you give way when you merge into the other lane and you slow down behind slower traffic that's in your lane. Except that when both lanes are available each type of traffic prefers "their" lane due to the speed difference.

That speed difference is decreasing in the bigger cities recently. Ebikes drive 25 km/h and many shared streets are reducing from 50 to 30 km/h for cars. It probably helps that a lot of the bigger streets aren't shared, there are many separated bike lanes here.

t0mas88··on Startups brag they spend more money on AI than human employees
The example company is selling some AI thing. Feels very much like all the blockchain / crypto people using crypto.

Have you considered making it possible to share a stream/context? As an export/import function.

t0mas88··on All phones sold in the EU to have replaceable batteries from 2027
My iPhone 14 is 1081 days old, charged every night, battery capacity is reported as 81%. So in Apple's own measurements this is possible.

I guess there is some built in spare capacity, but that may still qualify for the exemption?

t0mas88··on Airline worker arrested after sharing photos of bomb damage in WhatsApp group
They got lucky to keep their 0 fatalities, could have easily been 300 if one of their significant near misses went slightly different. Their crew rest rules are dangerous, Middle Eastern crew resource management is much worse than US and EASA, and airline oversight in the region is much less independent. Sure it hasn't gone wrong yet, but with how low the number of fatalities is overall that's a bad metric.

Edit: Just to quote the official investigation on an Emirates fuckup: "The flight crew reliance on automation and lack of training in flying go-arounds from close to the runway significantly affected the flight crew performance in a critical flight situation which was different to that experienced by them during their simulated training flights."

That reflects exactly how the rest of the industry thinks about the gulf carriers and their crews. Combine that with non optimal CRM and you have a disaster waiting to happen. They already did this twice, not understanding automation and (nearly) flying a jet into the ground.

t0mas88··on Vercel April 2026 security incident
You can tell Claude to use something highly structured like Spring Boot / Java. It's a bit more verbose in code, but the documentation is very good which makes Claude use it well. And the strict nature of Java is nice in keeping Claude on track and finding bugs early.

I've heard others had similar results with .NET/C#

t0mas88··on Airline worker arrested after sharing photos of bomb damage in WhatsApp group
Indeed. And interestingly those people also believe this myth that Emirates is somehow always super luxurious. Emirates Economy is just as cattle class as all other large airlines, but with a worse safety record and having to go through Dubai. Just don't do it.
t0mas88··on Airline worker arrested after sharing photos of bomb damage in WhatsApp group
Exactly. A dictatorship with a medieval religious view on human rights related topics.

And most of those influencers aren't even rich...

t0mas88··on The electromechanical angle computer inside the B-52 bomber's star tracker
> The Angle Computer is one piece of the Astro Compass, a system that locked onto a star and produced a highly accurate heading (i.e., compass direction), accurate to a tenth of a degree.

I think it provides ground track information not just heading? Which is far more valuable for aircraft navigation, because the main issue is unpredictable wind drift.
