t0mas88··on New Amazon Data Center Is Set to Have the Most Polluting Power Plant in the U.S.
Luckily the Trump administration has just paid over a billion dollars for the second time to stop a renewable energy project...
t0mas88··on New Amazon Data Center Is Set to Have the Most Polluting Power Plant in the U.S.
The overall American economy is going to pay the price in the long term. And current foreign policy is reducing trust in America as a reliable and stable partner, which will make things even worse.
t0mas88··on The simple elegance of the integrated timing belt loopback fastener
This is the only reason I still want a Voron. I don't need the extra speed, I don't print that much, but building it is a great project.
t0mas88··on Waymo CEO explains why Tesla’s camera-only self-driving falls short
Usually yes. I was very surprised it also goes through confusing road works in my area without intervention. That requires driving on the wrong side of the road, without lines, over some of these metal plates. It waits for opposite traffic that has the right of way and then drives through the section like a human would do.
t0mas88··on Increasing the lifespan of a bulb makes it worse in every other way
Same here, around 40 Philips Hue lights, 8 years old. All but one are still working fine. In the broken one the electronics went bad after about 4 years, the light was still working but would occasionally turn off or change color for no reason. Got a new one for free.
t0mas88··on Teardown: The BMW / Harman IDC23H Infotainment Unit (B423)
BMW has a talent in that space. Over engineered modules with terrible software. I recently drove a Toyota rental and they seem to have hired some former BMW software people as well.

I don't need 120hz Apple-like design, but it's crazy how they can't even keep a basic 30fps UI running smooth. And they still try to throw in more and more bad running animations.

t0mas88··on A system prompt to get AI to stop pretending to be human
GPT 5.6 seems to have this more than previous versions and more than Claude. It recently said to me "As a PPL holder I would..." So I asked whether it held a PPL :-) the correction was something like "No I'm an AI but a PPL holder would..."

This is probably the result of training on human written Reddit comments that would put it like that.

t0mas88··on We made Grok 4.5, GPT-5.5, and Claude build the same apps
That number is not just a statistic, it's load bearing. ;-)
t0mas88··on How Bending Spoons built a $23B tech empire from struggling brands
Their model sounds similar to ESW Capital. The main threat would probably be some form of SaaS-pocalypse, they both own a lot of fairly simple SaaS products with high prices.
t0mas88··on President pardons 9 for Clean Air violations for 'fixing their car'
Did you read the article? This was not a case of "fixing their car" this was a 4 million dollar business selling illegal services to disable emission controls. They absolutely deserved to be prosecuted.
t0mas88··on U.S. allows Anthropic to release Mythos AI to ‘trusted’ US organizations
But do they want to start a game of chicken with Google? Doing it to Anthropic is one thing, they're much smaller and less B2C. But Google is far more powerful and likely to defend their UK/EU business because they're also fucked if they don't.
t0mas88··on OpenRA
OpenRA is great, it feels like a better version of Red Alert 2.

The one thing I'm missing is C&C Generals and Zero Hour. Those were also really fun to play over LAN.

t0mas88··on U.S. allows Anthropic to release Mythos AI to ‘trusted’ US organizations
I thought "Free market!!1!" was basic US policy. But apparently you can't do any consumer protection laws, but you can regulate AI access to only your wealthy friends / campaign sponsors.
t0mas88··on U.S. allows Anthropic to release Mythos AI to ‘trusted’ US organizations
Consider it from a European perspective: The US under this administration is more unreliable than China. If Trump decides tomorrow that he's unhappy about something he'll pull some random other thing to bully the other side. You can't do business with that.

Rebuilding trust and foreign relationships is going to take a long time after Trump is gone.

t0mas88··on U.S. allows Anthropic to release Mythos AI to ‘trusted’ US organizations
These are export restrictions, so if the model is in London (how do you determine that? The weights? The training itself?) there is no need to export it from the US. Then Google may have found gold. They can sell it to everyone that can't get the best OpenAI or Anthropic models.
t0mas88··on Founding a company in Germany: €9600, 152 days and I still can't send an invoice
Sounds like bad advice. Registering a local company in the Netherlands is super simple, tax is an online portal, everyone could do it. Setting op a foreign Delaware company means you're then dealing with international tax issues.

Unless you also personally relocate, then it probably makes sense.

t0mas88··on Founding a company in Germany: €9600, 152 days and I still can't send an invoice
That's the American viewpoint, right of the strongest, sue if they wronged you. European systems typically have a different philosophy where the counterparties are more protected.

It's expressed in stronger consumer protection laws, but also these German things where you can't start a GmbH/LLC with zero capital and wish the counterparties good luck suing you if you never pay them.

t0mas88··on Founding a company in Germany: €9600, 152 days and I still can't send an invoice
The Netherlands changed the rules 14 years ago to allow a BV (equivalent to a German GmbH or US LLC) with zero starting capital. If suppliers want to check company capital, the data is public with the companies register (KvK for locals).

There are two reasons not to go this way in NL, 1. There are tax discounts for small businesses that only apply to a sole proprietorship kind of structure and 2. Administrative costs for a BV are slightly higher because the legal entity itself needs to file taxes, instead of only the owners having to do so.

But the difference is now very small, #1 has been reduced the past few years and #2 is quite simple. It's an online portal to submit the numbers, if you know what you're doing you don't need an accountant.

And I think this is the key criticism for the German system. They don't seem to have a simple online portal for this and they still require 25k starting capital. That makes it harder for a small business to get started.

t0mas88··on All train services in Germany halted after train radio communications disruption
The railroads have their own mobile network, GSM-R, it's in the article...
t0mas88··on Dutch Railways offers unlimited off-peak train travel nationwide for €49/month
The time of tapping in at the ticket barriers counts for the whole trip. If you get in just before the start of peak-hours, you still pay the off-peak rate for the whole trip. But if you tap in before 9am, the whole trip counts as peak-rates also the part that happens after 9am.

Transfer don't change it, they're all part of the same trip. Going out of a station and then back in also doesn't interrupt your trip. As far as I know you need 60 minutes of being "out" of the train system for it to be considered a new trip.

t0mas88··on Dutch Railways offers unlimited off-peak train travel nationwide for €49/month
It started out as an idea to introduce the same concept as the Deutschlandticket in NL. But the government has a budget deficit and the national railway company expected a capacity issue during peak hours. As a result the ticket is only valid in off-peak hours and the low price is only for 2 months.
t0mas88··on US Air Force B-52 bomber crashes after takeoff, Edwards Air Force Base says
Planes don't age in the same way cars do. There is a maintenance schedule that inspects and replaces almost literally every component at some point. So the engines on these planes can be just a year old for example.

And the military has a tendency to also upgrade the avionics and capabilities at several points in the lifetime of a program. So there is a lot of tech in these planes that's much newer than 60 years old.

t0mas88··on My Homelab AI Dev Platform
There is, but it's limited. For example Forgejo does not expose CI build logs via the API so it's hard to make Claude auto-fix a build issue.

I still need to find the time to get into the Forgejo code and add that endpoint.

t0mas88··on My Homelab AI Dev Platform
Nice! I've done that with Claude Code + Forgejo but as a small separate app to run Claude in Docker: https://github.com/smithy-ai/smithy-ai
t0mas88··on Hetzner Price Adjustment
They are not raising prices for existing contracts, only new ones.
t0mas88··on I'm building a parallel internet, and it's called The Thinnernet
Adblockers. On a lot of sites a significant portion of the bloat is from third party ads and tracking.
t0mas88··on Switzerland wil have a referendum to cap population at 10M
Jup, quite common in the Netherlands. There are 10 minute trains from Utrecht to Amsterdam. And form Rotterdam and Den Haag to Schiphol. And from Utrecht to Den Bosch and Eindhoven.

Most of these are double decker trains and long platforms so they move a lot of people at once.

t0mas88··on Switzerland wil have a referendum to cap population at 10M
The Netherlands should do this as well, maybe DB will then at some point figure out how to run a train on time. The ICEs from Germany are more often late than on time, which then causes delays for other trains using the same tracks.
t0mas88··on Apple reveals new AI architecture built around Google Gemini models
And at the same time they claim it can't be rolled out in Europe because the DMA would force them to allow selection of other AI providers? Which would not even be true if this was an Apple product built on the models of Google, just like the DMA does not force them to pick a different datacenter of office cleaning provider.
t0mas88··on Apple reveals new AI architecture built around Google Gemini models
That still doesn't explain why my data can only be sent to Apple and not to another vendor of my choice.
