sztanko··on In defense of the Google Chef (2011)
First of all I find it inappropriate to discuss who deserved what.

Second of all, it is wrong to bring an example of a chef in the context of the problem of disproportionally large reward of people who joined the company early compared to someone who joined the company later but contributed more.

Early joiners get paid for the risk. They acknowledge the risk before joining the startup and have a choice. Unfortunately chefs don't have a choice and in most cases they have to accept what they are being offered, because there is no other alternative.

Third of all, paying $20M a chef can be treated as an extremely successful public relations move. This helped Google to gain that image of the "don't be evil" Robin Hood operating on the Land Of Opportunities. On the other side, rich Zynga executives paint themselves in evil tones when denying money from a poor chef.

The real question is what should be encouraged more: risk taking or professionalism. Zynga executives believe the later. Which probably reflects the fact startups are becoming more like corporations.

But this is a first world problem and has nothing to do with the poor chef who was lucky enough to win a lottery in form of Google.

sztanko··on Why the World Needs OpenStreetMap
enjoy :)
sztanko··on Why the World Needs OpenStreetMap
OpenStreetMap is unique. It is the only global and free source of cartographic data. My circular hiking route generator (walks.io) would not exist without it.

Although I believe it has the same problem Ubuntu has - it is geek driven and utterly unsexy for others. It has been acknowledged by OSM-ers themselves and a substantial amount of work is being done currently in direction of democratisation of OSM (although I don't know how successful it is going to be)

Mapbox is putting a lot of effort into it currently and I hope the situation will change within the next year.

I personally think the best thing you can do in popularisation of OSM is creating projects based on it.

sztanko··on How to Burst the "Filter Bubble" that Protects Us from Opposing Views
TL;DR version: the idea is that "content you might like" should recommend not only the relevant information of your views, but also the helpful information of opposite views from highly ranked authors. This will milden the polarisation of views and make everyone more informed of the issue.
sztanko··on Google Maps Open-Source Challenger MapBox Raises $10M From Foundry Group
Mapbox is awesome. Speaking of their tile maps, there are two things that make them less competitive compared to Google: geocoding and street view. While nominatim is fantastic, it is nearly not as good as google maps search, which has people employed full time to update company listings, etc. There are many companies that depend on search so much they are willing to stick to google maps.
sztanko··on Come to London
I wasn't an intern and I wanted to go towards Java/Hadoop. Which was not required at Lokku at that time.
sztanko··on Come to London
Several years ago I treated Lokku as the coolest place to work in London according to my criterias. It was the only one map-obsessed, small, open-source friendly, no-bullshit startup in a nice location. Unfortunately I was a Java guy and they were looking for Perl people.

I believe you cannot underestimate the impact it makes on London geo scene. Without Lokku, London will be a rather dull place from geospatial perspective.

If I were in the Uni now (I graduated in Hungary), I would definitely apply.
