For sure, because copy pasting from stackoverflow was already to difficult. Everyone loves writing business logic in computer understandable words. Name it LLM, programming language, calculator, there is still parser and interpreter. The only switch is attempt to replace deterministic machines with not deterministic machines by reducing machine error rate to acceptable percentage.

You can and should safely assume people can do anything that's possible to do. Weather something is bad or good is a term of historical debate.

szczepano··on FOSS infrastructure is under attack by AI companies
they respect robots.txt at least major ones like meta, claude, google, openai, based on my infra observations robots.txt is enough in 90%, 10% is just banning ip ranges for couple of days but those are no AI companies
szczepano··on FOSS infrastructure is under attack by AI companies
there is simple solution for gentlemens:

robots.txt should allow to exclude all AI crawlers and AI crawlers should be forced to add "AI" to their crawl user agent headers and also respect robots.txt saying they can't crawl this website

right now we need to do this:

User-agent: *

Disallow: /

szczepano··on LLMs and the End of Programming – CS50 Tech Talk with Dr. Matt Welsh [video]
Yeah let's put one computer / server room as a keeper of all knowledge. Let's make it cheap and powerfull so people instead of looking for knowledge in different places go to one place. In the meanwhile start couple of conflicts and spread fake news to make people hostile to each other so they don't like arguing. People decide to instead of arguing between each other let's just listen to computer to solve problems. Failure is painfull so just ask computer and our work is done. As more and more people would start asking powerfull computer for solution, other knowledge places will disappear due to lack of investments so powerfull computer will buy out everything that's left to eliminate competition. At some point computer gives another brillant idea to reduce our carbon footprint. Just stop printing books, selling computers with hard drives. Instead of that make lightweight terminals that stream knowledge from one place directly into human mind. What could go wrong if we eliminate that computer ?
szczepano··on A paradigm for developer productivity (2022)
Looks like people once again are trying to make very complicated measurements that micromanage workers instead of using classical approaches like "The iron triangle of project management" - good, fast and cheap.

Why is there no tool that shows a triangle with features, bugs and support quality. Because it would obviously show that there are no new features, terrible support and tons of bugs. Everyone is doing everything except the job that needs to be done. They do it to meet the requirements of newly created 20 indicators. And who is to blame for this ? Obviously not management, they just sit and watch indicators waiting to send those who are underperforming on the bar charts to the HR department for a little talk.

Splendid

szczepano··on Working quickly is more important than it seems (2015)
When I read about speed of doing things this always reminds me a tale of two programmers https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=677655, archive link https://web.archive.org/web/20121226223216/http://mail.linux...

I'm not against or in favour of speed. History showed us many times that most people don't care about truth and correct solutions, people care about efficiency and moving things fast. Just look at gaming industry and preordering. Agile project management. This is what is called taking risks and making a jump into abbyss before we look what is underneeth. Taking risk is always praised. Question is which jump will be last one and will kill us all?

szczepano··on Ask HN: When did 7 interviews become “normal”?
Hiring today is like meeting your wife after a wedding and just before you go to bed. And there are bigger questions, why we even need resumes if those are disconnected from hiring process and mean nothing except passing trough ATS algorithms. Hiring got broken exactly at the same time when it became separate profession not strictly connected with demand from people who need help with their work. I never fully understood why developer who need help can't hire people directly to help him. Those people would spend together 8 hours a day for at least couple of months if not couple of years and they often meet at the very end. If there's no chemistry between them why hire ? There's lots of talks about scaling and toxicity, but this is result of hiring people who don't talk with each other cause they didn't know they would work together before they got into this big brother show on company island called agile team. What was wrong with this idea of helping each other that worked 15 years ago that established this whole industry ?
szczepano··on The phones of Ukrainian president Zelensky

szczepano··on My own phone number is now spam texting me
The problem with data protection acts is that they try to protect data and it won't work cause the data they try to protect is outside people houses. Everything that is outside house is public and we just need to assume you need to provide data about it so we can verify your identity like with public key. Just to give example, when you live the house anyone can ask you anything ex. ask your neighbour about your name, anyone can read your house number, can see you or take photo of you legally or illegally that's different topic but we should protect peoples privacy inside their houses instead of trying to protect something we can't cause everyone see us how we are when we leave the house. It's basic public / private key problem. Everything outside house is public key and everything inside is private key.

So with phone we shouldn't protect people identity, address and/or company name but protect people from disruption with calls they don't want to answer and give them ability to verify who was calling, by even seeing their photo cause yes if I'm your neighbour I can see you and if I move next to you next year I can see you too. Wow.

There should be 2 call indexes one for contacts that should behave same as it's behaving now and second index for anything else that you shouldn't receive notifications but you can check this spam missed calls index and verify anyone that called you and add them to contacts - just how the old good paper phone book worked.

This empowers people to be able to make decision if I want those people to call me or not, cause you can always call back and it should be widespread when you call someone first time expect they might won't answer your call same as if you email someone they might not answer cause your mail is in spam.

Probably cause there is not much possible technology set in future oriented IP around so demand is bigger than media coverage. Decent movies you can count using hands, same with manga / anime. Books are a little better but book authors are mostly the same and not writing anything right now. RPG I know around 3 - maybe. Games are not many. Whole genere is very exploitable cause it's near future but hard to imagine and describe.

Now compare it with series about police / gangsters or war.

szczepano··on CD Projekt Red is under investigation
People mostly buy things they don't need. That's how corporate capitalism works. Most of things people buy, they drop second day and forget about it. To give a prosaic example - if people use phone for calling they don't have to buy new phone every year.

People are also conformists so they believe new is better. Most of them don't want to wait for this better to arrive, if they wait, they imagine things how this new stuff will look like and create false dreams.

They didn't invested time, they wanted to have things they imagined to be good - nobody imagine bad stuff for themselves. They lived in this imaginary world for long time and created pyramids and flying cars and as always at the end reality hit them hard. The bigger your imaginary world grow the bigger slap you get at the end - that's simply called life.

The real problem is people don't have much freedom these days besides internet and games due to how other things outside looks like. And world looks like this cause of the same people who think they live in the world they imagined not in the real world. The insanity grows bigger and bigger and sometimes blows. When it blows people are angry and fight. After that there is peace cause they go back to their imaginary world full of borders they already created.

I'm saying you can skip it and not buy it and if you bought it you can refund it, it's not a shame to not like something. We're not robots, we're people and each of us have different demands. Unless you're one of those junkies who want to play it now despite you don't like it. Nobody forces you to not wait a year. Fortunately we're not living in totalitarian society yet.

Now Morgan Stanley appeared that they already bought over 5% of CDP stocks and I'm waiting for hostile takeover and gamers to cry again - or maybe not cause they are already blinded by their nice beloved corporations - and say goodbye to another independent studio. Well we'll see. Everyone believed that CDP is big studio yet if you see on CP2077 credits most of graphics / QA work was outsourced, 3-4 people were working on AI and only 1 on R&D software. They managed to make game on their own engine and launch it on 5 platforms at the same time that's impressive to me based on number of developers I saw in credits.

At the end it's always people fault. I don't say it's all ok with CP2077 game but people were so much depressed at the end of 2020 that even if this game worked they would be angry cause everyone demanded different things, probably 90% of people who bought the game are happy cause the story is solid and you can go trough story without problems - all major main story related problems were fixed before Christmas. If you focus on dialogues and don't try to destroy city like in GTA the game is great. I see that most of those who are angry wanted GTA in future and are now pissed that they can't play it like GTA and they're trying to make it GTA using various mods. You can just go and see what mods are most popular - those are mods that mimics GTA game. They're probably even not target group of this game and shouldn't play it but they're like junkies and even if you tell them that they don't have to play this game and they can refund they're be angry about it cause they want to play this game how they like it and they want to play it like GTA. That's insanity.

szczepano··on Tensorflow on edge, or – Building a “smart” security camera with a Raspberry Pi
You mean esp-who ? It uses mobilenetv2 so it's quite possible to train it to detect person instead of face. Didn't tried myself, just started playing with it.
szczepano··on Tensorflow on edge, or – Building a “smart” security camera with a Raspberry Pi
esp32-cam microcontroller costs around $6 and you have face detection build in. It have bluetooth and wifi and most of it's drivers code if not everything is on github. Only problem is you need to program it using arduino or other microcontroller hardware.

szczepano··on Are Ideas Getting Harder to Find?
What's your point because if it will start mutate too fast at this point you need to produce vaccine for every mutation that is deadly. For example flu vaccine is produced twice a year and not for every strain only for those that are most dangerous. Maybe there is need to develop new protection techniques instead of injecting dead virus into human body. Over the years it might become true that only way for human to survive on this planet is gene editing like CRISPR. There are already first trials to edit genes of adult human that you can read about here: https://ir.editasmedicine.com/news-releases/news-release-det...
szczepano··on Are Ideas Getting Harder to Find?
The funny thing about inventions is that nobody needs them until they have it. So throwing more and more researchers at one topic won't change anything as long as there won't be adaptation of this research. In my opinion there are too many inventions and not much products around them that people want to use. Adaptation is often correlated with business need. So adaptation is the biggest problem right now cause as soon as people start using invention they will tell if this is improving their lives or it's stupid idea. We don't need more researchers we need more testers and producers and here comes availability. When researcher put patent on his research availability is near zero so invention is stopped in time. Also don't forget about : Great Inventions Are Often Overlooked.
szczepano··on Nasty macOS flaw is bricking MacBooks: Don't install this update
They're earning billions yet can't afford to keep 5 mac books of each type in different configurations in one room and person or computer who will launch update before release and report green light. As always whatever size of company testing is a bottleneck because having roughly 25 computers and testing room is a problem. What a wonderful world.
