szasamasa··on Apple blocks PC emulator in iOS App Store and third-party app stores
if you have to distribute via website or alternative app store, everybody can always have a known person to be responsible for piracy, in addition, it is just as easy to block as apps in apple's app store

sony is not yet a gatekeeper, might be in the future... apple does not have to sell in Europe, if it does, and big enough (no need to be monopoly) to be a gatekeeper, law and rules say they operate a critical infrastructure/platform in the EU economy and hence they cannot tax developers (a country has such powers)

the question is not whether Apple has to change but a question might be why? this is the field of monopolistic power and competition law... monopoly profit is not inherently bad, can help innovation but along the way we figured out it is probably best to curb this power in the long run

Apple had its time of their life and to be honest, I see little meaningful innovation in the last 5+ years, however, they suppress competition and innovation in the economy, controlling a gateway between innovative developers and users

another aspect is consumer prices... should consumers get lower prices or let apple take monopolistic tax from them? of course lower prices seems to be better nd it is one goal... however, we should and we do allow success and monopolistic profit by each and every big innovation, in the beginning and Apple has already had that

it is a bit like an economy supports patent law and competition law at the same time

most people are motivated by financial success and most company pay research and innovation for potential monopolistic profit and this works and it is protected! however, competition law or new forms of it like DMA kicks in later on

it is like you innovate, use patents, get big money but if you grow big you are not allowed to become like all companies become if not controlled: shifting from competitive innovative power to a country like taxing power

I think it is correct that we need competition law too, if we really think about our past, economics, history, and what motivates people

I think it is non-obtrusive and the first time you have to learn it (on the site you first want to use standalone or googleing or somebody tells you who already knows)

after the first time, you just know it... I would bet 1m dollars if we made consumer group tests..

that is intuitive and easy to remember, I did not say easy to guess :)

I agree that web is currently 99% terrible

But I blame web "designers" not web tech because it has become so powerful on so many levels

my favourite examples are: - V8 performance (but gecko and webkit engineers are great too) - webassembly - modular modern js - offline websites with service worker caching (I mean I see practically 0 websites making use of it... you download an asset, you cache it, even offline available... how many news sites let you read offline?) - web crypto - 100s of others https://developer.chrome.com/docs/capabilities/fugu-showcase

I do not use these but I find windows after linux bloated so it may have something to do with microsoft engineers? (teams)

spotify can choose its strategy, you can choose apple music native app (I guess there is something like this? I rarely listen to music but on youtube)

Idont know about teams but my partner has ipad and iphone and I hear often how teams and microsoft products behave bad on iHardware... it may have to do with the love these two big corps show towards each other :) maybe you have to buy a windows laptop for teams too, that is the walled garden philosophy you actually seem to protect :)

my partner now uses my laptop where I have a windows which I did not totally purged because I need this OS for testing :) hell there were chinese text the other day on the front page, you need to scan your finger twice (even if first was a success) sometimes, it cannot find the timezone from time to time :)

I am not linux fanboy, the first ubuntu I purged 20 years ago or so I tried, but in the last 5-10 years linux is just great and getting glimpses how windows works by free family IT care, pff... that is the world we live in :)

I added outlook as a web app for my partner and it has some apparent problems without testing it, but in the last 3 months I see it getting used and no problems I hear :)

I guess the web designers are not web app programmers and it takes time until a new breed of programmers takes over the web...

if I were spotify, I would keep the iOS app and you could choose 30% cheaper web or native... are they killing the native version?

and: maybe these companies are not self-respecting in the way I meant it :)

but every change is difficult... and again, it may turn out that the web just finds its use cases not totally taking over OR: Apple drops the fee to 3% and the change will not be so dramatic

maybe there are still no great web apps because Apple is still crippling web capabilities on a major platform and the status quo is still hiring mobile app developers because not technical managers copy each other to stay safe and users are used to native apps

nobody said that you have to allow possible great standalone UX on major platforms like iOS because tons of managers made the mistake to invest in web strategy because they trusted Apple to be nice and hence they have these great products already

first step is open all major platforms so that managers and developers see the web as a potential alternative to native app stores, then we will see much more great web apps in 1-2-3-5-10 years... I think microsoft made outlook a web app to have one code base, it is a very big step that capital strong companies make first because it is reimplementing same functionality first...

we want great web apps in the future, the web capabilities are already there, we need investment and good app programmers instead of web designers to see great web apps that build on the great web capabilities

the web capabilities are already there, you should study them... the great web apps not yet because Apple has been crippling them for over 10 years now and they have sole power over one of the major platforms

accepting the moderation, in my defense: I just saw I added a smiley at the end of the problematic sentence, which I actually probably did to remove sharpness but still being able to formulate myy strong conclusion/opinion

of course it is also possible to just argue against somebody with less emotions and being more polite, without saying such things which I will 100% try in the future! my personal style is also harsh but I never intend to be offensive and surely have zero joy in attacking, insulting or making other people small

harsh honesty is difficult to separate from attacks so it is legit to ban this style altogether

I rarely use mobile and social networking and I actually rarely come back to my comments, so much time

but here I am, the reply is: hover is a minimalistic usability example, I will not show my website yet, but I know it is totally possible for good or very-good programmers to write in application style, using web tech

try this one: https://web.telegram.org/k/

the writers are mathematicians I guess, russian minimalists... I remember I checked their site and it did not seem to use bloated stuff

compiled native UX code may be less kb than minimized js but actually I have never seen comparisons and I do not know much about UX programming in java, c++, android-java or swift or the like

however, a website can dynamically load (can, 99% do not make use of it) just in time what you need (or as a compromise, preload the next possible steps)... UX code, app code anything

you can make the client download always the very necessary code on its user journey... even UX code, app code...

what I find better in native is the built in bot protection :)

szasamasa··on It’s Official, Apple Kills Web Apps in the EU
thanks for the analysis :)

I do not use and know good web apps in the application sense, in plenty of comments I argued it is the tech of the future because web designers are mainly not real programmers and hence bad in app programming.

I mentioned hover (I did not write it) as an example that was in my mind that they asked us years back whether we needed a mobile app or is it enough to have responsive website.

I am the opposite of power user of mobiles, I do everything on linux desktop, I hate 99% of websites. So now I "installed" hover again on my phone because I already de-installed it. It was 5 sec, I got a button, I pressed it, and signed in with my pass manager, having an authenticator app activated it was still a breeze. Most websites would have already lost me...

There I have a feeling of a website but I see everything clearly and I can use it effectively, change things, pay things etc. One thing that was annoying in the 2 minute test of mine is that a seemingly button like thing did not work, you had to click on the text which I smiled at.

For usability it was 8/10 for me which is great because most sites are 0-4...

This site demonstrates not that it is a web app in the greatness sense but that there are so many things you do not need a native mobile app for, thanks to the web which can deliver usable standalone UX even from traditional web designers (hover engineers seem to be clever minimalistic web designers, not really modern web app programmers).

What I can tell you, that good web programming is totally possible, it is a question of modern js, modern web api (so that you do not have to write things in js just call c++ or rust code that is implemented by very capable native app engineers), V8 optimization, most importantly good future web programmers vs. bad current web designers.

Yes, hover makes 70 requests, 5 mb on first load, it is an old school website but still works for me, even on mobile. It is not a bombastic app but capable to become a standalone UX on mobile (aka app) where I can easily use it for the use cases there are in the web domain management domain of services :)

Sorry but I do not really know actually what your point is. In a year or so you can take a look at my site, it will be the best web app you have ever seen. It is totally possible. If you wish I write you a c++ app that you want to die after using it and it will so bloated importing 10 million libraries that I actually never use that the compiler needs over a minute :) Still great performant c++ apps are possible.

Tell me your angle. Are you a native app developer for mobile and you fear learning new things? Even if you invested a lot in coding in a language, I think 95% what your actual market value or knowledge is not the concrete language skill but years of programming experience.

In addition, you can use webassembly for c++ code, on the backend you can use normal strongly typed native languages, the web is beautiful, complex but beautiful. What you see on current websites is a horror. In a way on hover.com too but usability is ok.

well in a sense the right word may be oligarch...

US companies control all OSs but linux... they are surely working together with NSa and the US government which in turn let them become extremely powerful monopolies... what are oligarchs? people who play together with strong governments... Ithink the upper management of these US companies not just become oligarch-rich from soaring stock prices but the actual thing oligarch enjoy is power which is not 1 to 1 money

in the economical sense stock companies have shareholders, simple employees and management and the goal is to maximize profit... totally legit and apple is seemingly doing this by crippling the web because using apps from taxed app store and using browsers to browse simple websites is what fits their thinking and current(!) sales model

but you are right, why do people argue for apple I really dont understand... all you have to do if you want to stay simple and apple-safe to follow their suggestions, use safari, never download other browsers, do not use other app stores etc... a choice will not make their system worse

and what I want to add, I am not sure Apple actually on the profit max way with these decisions... not because I never buy iphones ever again because most people who buy apple rather tend to beleive them and accept and follow which is an understandable strategy when there is so much information around

but they missed making Safari THE browser where they now could distribute Apple products on all OS which may have lead to doubling the great profits we see nowadays... they could have bought tesla or porsche which fits this individualistic walled garden system they are so good at...they missed the cloud business, missed ai and who knows what else

and sometimes it is better long term if you lose some money but you let your developers experience some real competition which leads to actually better present value of long term future profits even if you lose some monopolistic profit

is it not apple have become? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3NASGb5m8s

and they do not have to disappear to fail, we never know the relative path, what could have happened... maybe being the biggest market cap company of the world is still failing relative to following a path with more competition, innovation etc...

szasamasa··on It’s Official, Apple Kills Web Apps in the EU
thanks for the details, you are probably right, then change linux to unix and chromium to blink in my comment, however, browser engines are all open source and they are the exact pitch perfect level to introduce competition

I am not so sure that chromium "kernel" or linux "kernel" ever become irrelevant... gecko or webkit maybe

even if only chromium engine stays, it is open source, if something goes wrong, you can fork or get back to gecko, webkit... we are all carbon based lifeforms, still there is great diversity I guess

why would we need to make so much effort to compete on browser engine level if it is so great that you cannot differentiate native to browser run programs?

I really do not understand what the point of your comments actually are... it is simply not true the browsers are not good for competition and I do not see what alternatives you suggest instead?

szasamasa··on It’s Official, Apple Kills Web Apps in the EU
why is a browser more overbloated than windows?

it was meant to run applications, that is why V8 is developed and optimized like hell, that is why we have webassembly to port c++ programs (try stockfish on lichess, it is webassembly)

originally, the browser was not meant to run applications, modern browsers are... strong indicator for this is chromium V8 performance and webassembly and the evolving js language with modules and node.js on server side

jvm introduced a competition to c++ and java is still top language, a browser is a kind of a jvm... you can use kotlin and other languages to compile to jvm and you can use js and webassembly to write apps on browsers

my point is, this is the best platform to introduce competition to native apps on walled gardens

the walled garden is not the os or browser but the company behind a closed os platform or closed single browser

on iOS, you had both: closed OS and closed single webkit browser engine

on every other os platforms you have true browser choice... since chromium is open source, you can create not just your toy browser but one of the most powerful ones... you can download the source code and if it goes in a restrictive direction, everybody can fork the web standard friendly versions

it is open and powerful, that is why most companies give a shit about browsers but it is not difficult for the EU for example to hire great browser engineers and create a beautiful stron free browser from an appropriate chromium version if things turned bad

whereas there are only 2 mobile operating systems that really work, from 2 giant US companies

where it is much more difficult to introduce competition is creating alternative mobile OSs... and then what, developers should create apps for this additional one two with another codebase?

browsers are the perfect level to introduce competition, in a way blink, webkit and gecko are all open source and chromium has a stron focus on improving web capabilities, pushed by 2 giants too (Google, Microsoft)

szasamasa··on EU to hit Apple with first ever fine in €500M penalty over music streaming
99% agree

but it is not oligarch who get the taxes, apple stock owners I guess

it is somehow the job of Apple management to maximize profit, they are doing this

question is whether they really optimizing future profits with this behaviour, they could have moved on already

I wanted to buy my mum an iphone, I am all linux and android, my partner has iphone and ipad and even if I dont like apple and microsoft logic, they are good products

I thought with face id it is easier to be safe and she will not really see that I forced a pass manager on her :)

and I was sure now apple abandons this behaviour and they were put on the right track, apple was somehow an option for me... until this happened

no way I ever buy an iphone anytime in the future for anybody

but I am probably a minority... I think this kind of behaviour is disgusting that apple does

however, if app store revenue is 100B dollar, every year, logically understandable, 500 million fines are noting

still, the world is governed by emotions too, and I will never forgive Apple

szasamasa··on EU to hit Apple with first ever fine in €500M penalty over music streaming
well if you think that you are a proud US citizen who somehow has Apple/Google, I think they actually pay their taxes in Ireland?

"When a customer buys an Apple product outside the United States, the profit is first taxed in the country where the sale takes place. Then Apple pays taxes to Ireland, where Apple sales and distribution activity is executed by some of the 6,000 employees working there. Additional tax is then also due in the US when the earnings are repatriated."

of course as means of power like NSA-level information you have them :)

and in the end, third party cookies are banned (cookie banners is not required actually if you do not have tracking)

you should read dma to understand the matter more :) https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/PDF/?uri=CELE...

dictatorship has of course its advantages too, you do not have to think or choose

szasamasa··on Apple broke iPhone web apps in the EU for anticompetitive reasons – Tim Sweeney
no, because they are gatekeepers and they operate within countries that have laws and regulations

Apple is not above the law... you cannot host pedofile stuff on YOUR platform because there are laws against it

heck I use a private rail company that travels on the rails built by the other state rail company thanks to EU law

they are better, have self check-in, bought double decker trains and the other train company laughed at them because these trains were designed originally for smaller distances

it is of course much more economical and this state rail company just ordered the same trains

the device and OS of Apple is like the rail tracks, people use them not Apple, and as long as they have that big marketshare they own the rails that developers MUST use

Apple would have just said no, double decker trains are not secure, everybody has to use our secure design on our rails because we protect our customers

monopoly hinders not just competitive prices but innovation too

szasamasa··on Apple broke iPhone web apps in the EU for anticompetitive reasons – Tim Sweeney
sure :)
szasamasa··on Apple broke iPhone web apps in the EU for anticompetitive reasons – Tim Sweeney
the right way would have been:

1. pay some macOS developers if iOS developers are that bad and implement necessary changes on a weekend since both OS are linux and macOS is capable (and they had years)

2. if Apple wants to play the oh-so-difficult card, they have to prove according to DMA why is it so much of a burden, which they cannot because it is not... still, they could have talked to EU to get an exemption to keep Safari web apps unbroken until they make the necessary changes that every web browser is ready to use web apps on iOS

what they did is to break all iOS web apps because they were only possible in Safari, fight one additional year with EU then allow them again after they lost

is not that evil? they dare this because it is only a minority of their users that uses web apps now...

szasamasa··on Apple broke iPhone web apps in the EU for anticompetitive reasons – Tim Sweeney
millions of users have iPhones so developers MUST deploy there

therefore competition MUST be forced because (it is actually a deeper question, my microeconomy professor told us monopoly makes profit and it is the potential source of innovation, in perfect competition there is no innovation money)

because it favors us consumers in the long run not just because products become cheaper but monopolies also suppress innovation

I guess Apple was innovative and created monopolies but they should innovate from monopolistic profit and create new monopolies and let old ones gently fade away in competition... plenty of big companies become stagnant

actually Apple is withholding web innovation and plenty of cross platform innovations never were born in the last decade... nowadays even single developers can create great cross platform products via web tech

Apple could have innovated in web instead of withholding it and they would have the best web browser and they could deliver apple products on all OS

strategically it is a very bad decision to try to do the same over and over again (vision pro, closed walled garden)

they misjudged browsers, electric cars

I mean face id and optic id and eye tracking is great but we live in a world with chinese and south koreans who copy like hell or a company that is even called meta... apple is nobody in AI too... no cloud business

what else did they miss that steve has never had?

szasamasa··on Apple broke iPhone web apps in the EU for anticompetitive reasons – Tim Sweeney
it is wishful thinking, if you pull spotify people will use another app on iOS... the way forward is alternative app sotres, the web as an app store etc... competition

more exciting is visionOS, I hope Netflix and co. NEVER make native apps and force Apple to support web browser based solutions

szasamasa··on Apple broke iPhone web apps in the EU for anticompetitive reasons – Tim Sweeney
in my definition an app is a standalone UX

a website in standalone mode is a web "app", so web apps are not possible in Safari if the website, even if uses all the modern web capabilities, cannot get rid of the browser bar... it is a shortcut to a website in tab mode then

in addition, we still not know which web capabilities Apple plans to disallow in websites, and will it be also disallowed in competing browsers?

is offline website with service worker caching possible? it seems to be disabled according to some beta testers...

I mean for you local storage may be not important but what a disadvantage it is for web programming if Apple clears local storage without the permission of the user as they do it in Safari tabs?

the whole absence of future guarantees is one of the biggest problems, because web programming is a strategy that companies could make now to deploy good web apps in 2-3 years...

szasamasa··on Apple broke iPhone web apps in the EU for anticompetitive reasons – Tim Sweeney
I can assure you now it is totally possible to create the same standalone UX on iPhone from the web more securely than using a native app... if Apple is forced to allow at least other browser engines to use web capabilities securely (just like they could do this on macOS or any OS is capable)

is it easy to create good web UX, not... most web desgners are not real programmers and most websites are terrible, I do not really use many web apps but plenty of them might be terrible now, too

but it all comes down to the developer behind the product... if you get less native offerings in the future (there are areas where native is better, it is actually also a good bot protection to require native apps) then your good programmers simply deliver good web apps to you and it actually will be the same UX only cheaper

interestingly enough, if everybody has to pay the apple tax and it is the user who pays it in the end, developers may just stay by native, no competitive pressure

one area is that smaller innovative apps from even sole developers may never come to realisation because it is expensive to pay android and ios developers...

I just checked lichess... it is a mixed website that is not responsive (on smaller screens terrible) but uses webassembly for stockfish, that is a plus

still one of the biggest expense is 1 or 2 app developers, if they did not get 500k donations they might not even exist because of app store restrictions... that would be a loss

actually they should have just invest that money to create a responsive design and maybe some offline functionality and they could deploy "apps" on iPhones and Android and actually on all desktops... but you might just want to use lichess as tabs there, one tab for analysis, one for broadcasts etc...

that is a good example how we might lose great small projects like lichess... and why we only have 2 greats chess sites, one getting 100 million dollar from subscriptions... it is simply difficult to create a cross platform solution even if the stockfish ai is free and open source

one monopoly creates others...

szasamasa··on Apple broke iPhone web apps in the EU for anticompetitive reasons – Tim Sweeney
it would be nice to strongly suggest a cross browser idea in the manifest "standard" that is an unstable draft but anyways... that is complicated because it is actually now a browser decision

my idea would be long pressing the domain (2 sec) and then standalone mode and "app" icon... like the icon appears and you drop it on your home screen (on desktop other stuff like a prompt do you want a launcher icon, a desktop icon or just integration into apps)

it is extremely universal and easy to remember, practically you grab the web domain and pack it into an icon and drop it onto your home screen or game folder on the home screen etc...

a clear, instinctive user choice... you learn it on one domain and apply it by all other

actually, you do not even need a manifest file if you have some favicon and short app name in the html...

it is just a user choice to switch to standalone mode from tab mode, aka use it as an app

it would also clear up these unnecessary buzzwords and non-standard failing wording like "progressive" "PWA" or "install"...

I understand what people meant with these words back then but it just confuses even tech people... nowadays standalone mode ("install") is orthogonal to whether the website is capable, good, progressive or whatever...

like the .fun domain is a nice game that your child tried and enjoyed, it is hopefully well written so you want to use it in standalone instead of tab mode... you do it without fear of installing anything (nothing is installed) and if everything ok you use it launching it directly from the home screen without browser UI... seemless, that is the actual idea, no need for confusing and contraproductive wording

szasamasa··on Apple broke iPhone web apps in the EU for anticompetitive reasons – Tim Sweeney
there are poorly made native apps too

there is a fix number of good programmers...

these good programmers can create the exact same wonderful interactive pixels on your screen whether they use native or web tech, if web tech is allowed

it is the decision of the developers what they use and offer to you but again, if good developers migrate to become good web programmers in the future that you fear then you become good web apps from them, you will not even know the difference

currently, most good programmers use native languages because Apple restricts even now web tech and good programmers are payed to program in swift

you can chill since those websites and web apps you see bad were made by bad programmers not because web tech is inferior... you know, js just instructs native browsers that are native apps so actually web tech can be just the same (with better security if you use secure browsers)

if 1 million programmers create native apps and half is bad half is great and you really see a discrepancy in native vs. web itis simply because more bad than great programmers are currently "designing" web sites

good programmers will not be forced to use web tech and fail to deleiver good UX :)

szasamasa··on Apple broke iPhone web apps in the EU for anticompetitive reasons – Tim Sweeney
they will care in the future(!)

1. first ensure that companies may start to think strategically about putting their best to web programming (not web "designers" of flickering html screens who use css packages that are 1mb without dynamic loading and the page uses 1% of it)

2. wait 2 years

3. get the same UX (in standalone mode if you wish aka home screen web apps) via your freely chosen browser engine via the web for 100$ instead of 130$ in the App Store (some app lifetime cost, for the sake of argument)

4. see how people of the future decide :)

Before you complain about shitty websites and nobody wants web apps anyways, first ask the question whether you know any good company or developers who re-focused their resources (programmers) to abandon native programming and take all the fix cost hits for a strategy that delivers the same experience without 30% tax getting a competitive edge.

Oh, you cannot make such strategic decisions until regulators of the world force Apple to abandon anti-competitive practices? Like as you see even in 2024 there is still no clarity whether it will be possible to deliver the same standalone UX to iOS via the Web because of Apple?

Your reasoning is somewhat circular. Let alternative "app stores" like the web deliver the same standalone UX to iOS because it is hell possible with current web capabilities and every OS including macOS is capable of supporting browser sandboxing.

THEN wait 2-3-5 years so that best programmers can study the web and migrate to create the same fantastic experiences you claim by native apps.

THEN write your above comment if still applies, thanks!

I do not know. I think that it is a weekend job and then a month testing.

If Apple does not retreat they will have to explain this. Especially since every other OS (macOS too) can do this.

However, at the end of this day I think they just have a chess game to push it 1,2,3 years in the future... 1 year in EU, 2-3 years elsewhere.

Meanwhile they broke web apps on iOS for a year.

I just hope that some bigger company sues them for this after it is clear that it was not needed.

szasamasa··on It’s Official, Apple Kills Web Apps in the EU
I see that you had high level replies and you are probably more knowledgable than I am in security.

However, you cannot shut down browsers because they are the weak spot.

Even if you are right in every argument you wrote in security I do not find it relevant.

You have the choice to use Safari on iOS and your security will not be worse than before.

I just believe that freedom and choice is trumping this kind of parenting security.

Again, everybody can remove browsers or not use them or use Safari or shut down js.

We can grow and evolve, browsers could blacklists or whitelist sites, you can use these lists or not...

I really dont understand the fearmongering.
