systemtrigger··on Show HN: My two-week MVP, Call2Record
Fixed, thanks.
systemtrigger··on Show HN: My two-week MVP, Call2Record
I love how low you've made the pricing. You must be in the red after paying Twilio 1¢/minute inbound, 2¢/SMS and 2¢/minute outbound. Thanks!

iPhone limits the size of voice memos that I can email myself so for long memos I will use Call2Record.

Beautiful web design. Nice job.

systemtrigger··on How to Get PayPal to Freeze Your Account in Four Easy Steps
The intermediary has little control over the quality and delivery of the product being sold, and must be trusted to pay the third party. The risk of chargebacks and fraud is higher thus PayPal cannot afford to underwrite the transactions.
systemtrigger··on JQuery noise generator
There is a little variation in how the noise renders across browsers. FF vs Chrome vs Safari: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17455578/noise.png
systemtrigger··on Offer HN: I'll build it, you design it
Which project did you choose?
systemtrigger··on Offer HN: I'll build it, you design it
Wow, that's very kind of you. I'm just learning Rails so would appreciate the help with my mvp.

I designed and prototyped a text-to-speech service - http://audiothink.com - and need help making it work.

It's on heroku. If you provide me your email address I will add you as a collaborator to git@heroku.com:seirt.git

Otherwise here is the identical repo on github: git@github.com:ryanm/audiothink.git

I was thinking of using Wufoo to handle payments. That may be out-of-scope for an mvp, but if it isn't I can add you as a collaborator on Wufoo as well.

My email address is systemtrig@gmail.com if you want to discuss. To anyone else reading this, I could sure use a co-founder with some Rails skills - please reach out to me if you're interested in partnering.

systemtrigger··on Linus Torvalds: Pearls before swine
The food. I ordered pasta primavera and its aroma filled the room.
systemtrigger··on Linus Torvalds: Pearls before swine
Yes he was there promoting an album.
systemtrigger··on Linus Torvalds: Pearls before swine
I met Billy Bob Thornton in a bar in Minneapolis one night. I'd worked a long day and was walking back to my hotel room, when I looked over to my left and saw Billy Bob sitting at a bar with 2 or 3 other people. Well I went in and grabbed a seat right next to him, ordered some food (wish I hadn't, kind of rude) and eavesdropped on his conversation. They were talking about baby names of all things. I knew a joke about baby names, so I nonchalantly told my joke to a guy whom I later learned was Billy Bob's manager, who told Billy Bob that he had to hear my joke. Billy Bob turned toward me with the biggest grin I've ever seen and all I could think was "Don't screw up. He won an Academy Award!" I somehow nailed my joke and Billy Bob shook my hand as he introduced himself, "I'm Billy." I must have said something boring afterwards because Billy politely returned to his previous conversation. That was ok by me, Billy made my week just sharing a moment of his time and being a nice guy. Glad I met him instead of your celebrity chef neighbor.
systemtrigger··on GroupOn, LivingSocial engaging in questionable practices
A Sr VP of a well-known sports equipment brand told me he was planning to create a new product for the sole purpose of selling it on Groupon - in order to maximize his profit margin. The product will be virtually identical to a competing product in his line.
systemtrigger··on Mark Suster Is Wrong, You Should Be A Startup Entrepreneur
I'm amazed you took the leap with zero savings and a two-month old baby to support. Congrats; what is this 'financially rewarding' startup you created?
systemtrigger··on DHH: Un-Manage Your Employees
To the commenters here who notice there may be an upper limit on the number of employees David's approach is valid for, keep in mind that the subtitle of the article identifies "small business" as the scope. Thus the counterexample of Google seems unfair. That said, the legal definition of "small" in the U.S. for most nonmanufacturing businesses is that the business must have less than $7 million in annual receipts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small_business#Size_definitions). It would be interesting to know if David feels there exists an upper limit on the number of employees in order for a flat structure to work, and if so, what that number might be. Since large organizations, if they are designed well, are just a latticework of small organizations maybe it's possible there is no upper limit.

Regarding David's larger point I would add that having a boss tends to make people feel slavish and subservient to a certain extent. This creates an unhealthy work environment compared to the ideal in which all employees are truly on equal footing as regards power. One of the tragedies of working for a manager is that nervous feeling you get when you ponder how much control this one person wields over your career. A superior organizational design is one that takes care to hire people who are great at managing themselves and entrusts them with the power to do so.

systemtrigger··on Stop Saying ‘Let me know when works for you’
An additional benefit to imposing constraints on potential meeting times like this is that you appear to respect your own time, which conveys to the recipient that you may be in demand rather than desperate for a meeting.
systemtrigger··on Ask HN: Entrepreneurs and Freelancers
Your requirements and your budget. Clearly document both.
systemtrigger··on USB glory holes: anonymous, offline file-sharing in public space
The hack here is that someone got a ton of press for the cost of 5 USB drives and a gallon of cement.

According to nxdom these .coms are available: ridya, selldr, payrid, clutterz, easyrids.
systemtrigger··on Ask HN: Online tools to keep up with your relationship
I'd be happy to take a look at it. Feel free to email me.
systemtrigger··on Ask HN: Online tools to keep up with your relationship
My wife and I send SMS and email to one another but that's about it. We're both on Facebook and Twitter but it seems weird posting our messages to one another out for everyone to view. If we were to use a service designed for couples it would probably keep most everything private and its focus would be planning: financial, vacations, home and gifts.
systemtrigger··on Benoit Mandelbrot, RIP
What profound ideas this man brought to the world. Just finished a project for a guy who mentioned he was deeply inspired by Mandelbrot. With the help of a few friends, he built the world's largest VW bus. Can you spot the hidden Mandelbrot set in this header image? http://www.walterthebus.org/the-scoop/tribe-walter/
systemtrigger··on Five killer domains I own … looking for technical co-founders.
By that reasoning we should expect higher traffic to thirtysevensignals.com than 37signals.com. Having a numeral in your domain seems unwise but for a location oriented company "20" is a winner. It is not worth $70k though IMHO.

Aday.com is worth thousands. I've been looking at hundreds of potential domains for a daily deal site and it's been frustrating. If I had found aday.com for $10 I would have shouted so loud all my neighbors would be deaf.

systemtrigger··on Killing the Cancel Button on Forms for Good
Completely agree. So many cancel buttons are just clutter.
systemtrigger··on Ask HN: Where to look to learn UX/Design
Oh I agree. We inspect elements of beautiful sites in Firebug to answer the question "How was that specific thing made?" Obviously Firebug does not find inspiration for you, it won't teach you the principles of design and it isn't going to design sites for you.
systemtrigger··on Ask HN: Where to look to learn UX/Design
Many YC startups have stunning design e.g. heroku, wufoo. When you come across a beautiful site, open it in Firebug to see how it was done.
systemtrigger··on 40% of Groupon merchants say "never again"
They're interested. I personally know a national brand manager who is creating a new product for the sole purpose of running it on Groupon. Margin problem solved.
systemtrigger··on 40% of Groupon merchants say "never again"
Another merchant strategy: introduce a high margin product/service to your line for the sole purpose of selling it on Groupon.
