systemtest··on Can Dutch universities do without Microsoft?
Third generation Turkish immigrants vote for the Turkish elections despite never having set foot in Turkey because of the military draft.

Goes to show that voting based on a passport is silly.

systemtest··on Can Dutch universities do without Microsoft?
I personally believe that voting should be based on residency, not citizenship.

If you live in the country you can vote. If you don’t live in the country you can’t vote. Simple.

No taxation without representation.

systemtest··on Can Dutch universities do without Microsoft?
In the case of these two countries dual citizenship is not allowed. So for the rest of my life I will not be able to vote here. This isn’t about “not integrating enough”.

If someone has been living and working in a country for a long time that should be enough to let them vote in national elections, regardless of what citizenship they have.

systemtest··on Can Dutch universities do without Microsoft?
As a EU citizen that moved to a different EU country: Yes please!

I constantly need a VPN as some services from my old country are geo-blocked. And when I forget to disable the VPN to my old country I can't visit certain sites from my current country. I need two phone numbers as some services require a phone number from the country they operate out of. I'm talking banking, classifieds, insurance, municipal. I can't use certain apps from my current country because I have to switch my account country but that disables apps from my old country.

And the best part, I can't vote for the national elections in my current country. Only for those in my old country. And it will be like that for the rest of my life. An example: I had to enable VPN to see the election results of my old country, the one I am eligible to vote in.

Please unify the EU so I don't have to deal with all of this.

systemtest··on The EU made Apple adopt new Wi-Fi standards, and now Android can support AirDrop
Don't forget the USB 3.0 micro-B on the Galaxy S2, the 18-pin connector, the 20-pin connector, mini-USB and various barrel connectors. USB-C was a blessing for Samsung, they could finally ditch their sub-par connectors.
systemtest··on The EU made Apple adopt new Wi-Fi standards, and now Android can support AirDrop
Do you have any sources that "Apple fought the EU" regarding USB-C?
systemtest··on The EU made Apple adopt new Wi-Fi standards, and now Android can support AirDrop
Do you have any source that states that Apple was forced? Given that they switched the iPhone to USB-C multiple product iterations before it was required makes it seem to be that they were not forced.
systemtest··on The EU made Apple adopt new Wi-Fi standards, and now Android can support AirDrop
Phil Schiller announced Lightning as the modern connector for the next decade back in September 2012 during the release of the iPhone 5.

Chargers of that era typically had a USB A port and can still be used with an A to C cable

Apple used USB-C on the iPhone 15 and 16 without being forced to do so. If Apple was indeed forced to use USB-C they would have postponed it to the 17.

Do you also think Apple was forced to use USB-C on the iPad and MacBook?

systemtest··on I hacked my washing machine
I have a G-Shock 5600 watch that can alert me when my washing machine is finished. At the start of the cycle I take note of the total time it takes, I set that time on the timer of the watch and hit start. It will beep once the washing machine is finished. Been doing that for about 15 years now.

It works with all brands regardless of API.

systemtest··on Apple's Browser Engine Ban Persists, Even Under the DMA
This is with the Safari browser on iOS, using Google websites while not being logged in to Google. No content blockers.
systemtest··on Apple's Browser Engine Ban Persists, Even Under the DMA
Those popups I get multiple times a day about how this website works better on Chrome , which cover half my screen and which forward me to the App Store, are incredibly misleading. I have misclicked many times and then the App Store opens up. If you go back to the browser and hit the back button, it will again open the App Store. I have to press and hold the back button and skip multiple pages to get back to what I was doing.
systemtest··on Hacking a Smart Home Device (2024)
The result of this process is that the air purifier boosts when the air quality inside drops.

I feel like that is something that doesn’t or at least shouldn’t require a string of IoT devices, apps, wireless communication and hubs. Why not leave all of that out and just attach an air quality sensor to the air purifier and a small LCD to adjust the settings?

The light in my hallway turns on automatically when I walk past. No cloud, no HomeAssist, no WiFi, no Zigbee, no apps, no batteries to change. Just a motion sensor hardwired to the light fixture. Hasn’t failed me once in the past ten years. Works great even if the network goes down.

systemtest··on What are the best options for Amazon SDEs thinking about leaving over RTO policy
There is no legal right to work from home in The Netherlands. The only law we have is that an employer should give you a good reason to work from the office.
systemtest··on Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week
> rather than a 2 hour car ride as seems to be the case for many people in the US.

The Netherlands has good bicycle infrastructure but the majority of people still go to work by car.

The commute time between countries is similar.

systemtest··on Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week
The Netherlands does not have transport cost compensation by law. Various unions have negotiated it for their members and a lot of people have it as part of their compensation package, but it's not mandated by law that a company should pay you for your travel cost.

A company is also not mandated by law to provide you with a bicycle.

You also do not get your cost fully covered if you drive by car. Currently it's capped at 23 cents per kilometer which is not enough for most cars.

It's not a tax deductible, it's just (income) tax free.

The Samsung Galaxy Buds only have 360 audio and the better audio codec if you use a Samsung Galaxy smartphone. Doesn't even work on other Android devices let alone iOS. And as far as I know you can't tweak the hearing aid features of Galaxy Buds on any device.

systemtest··on Apple must pay 13B euros in back taxes, EU's top court rules
Not complaining! It's wonderful that we are finally getting investments in a better environment. And ASML provides a big boost to the economy as well.

But a bus line that goes from the train station directly to one company, together with housing that will be filled with the expats from ASML is obviously an (indirect) company subsidy.

systemtest··on Apple must pay 13B euros in back taxes, EU's top court rules
The Dutch government is spending billions to keep ASML in The Netherlands. To circumvent these prohibitions, the money doesn't go directly to ASML but is invested in better infrastructure, housing and education in the local area. More trains and busses to bring people to the company, better energy grid to power all the ASML offices, more money towards STEM studies of the local universities so they are creating the new ASML workforce, building extra homes so the company can hire more people.

Plus tax cuts for the employees of ASML, which is fully legal under EU legislation and prohibitions.

I use around 60 gigabyte on my phone. When I go on holiday I put around 40 gigabyte of offline maps on it. 128 gigabyte is enough for me.
