syrrim··on Drag an emoji family with a string size of 11 into an input with maxlength=10
Apple clearly intended to implement it though, and did so incorrectly.
syrrim··on KDE and GNOME seeks $100k to turn Flathub into a Store for the Linux desktop
AppImage now has solutions for all three issues. They all rely on a central daemon, which implies they will only work ootb with support from the distribution. The same is true of snap and flatpack as far as I'm aware, so this isn't strictly a deficiency of the format.
syrrim··on Making It Legal to Play Outside: “Reasonable Childhood Independence” Bills
They made it illegal to be a single mom and not provide adequate childcare. Many families have both parents working, so the situation of needing to find someone to look after your child is not unique to single parents. That said, this is one of the reasons raising children on your own is more difficult.
syrrim··on Time to get the Posix elephant off our necks?

syrrim··on New headless Chrome has been released and has a near-perfect browser fingerprint
in what sense? spaces as mod encoded (%20) values have been around ever since I've used the web. those spaces are occassionally displayed as spaces in the url bar, depending on the context.

The latest windows version requires a hardware tpm on a device in order to be installed. Every hardware vendor has therefore included a tpm on all their new machines. This was already standard on apple devices, and many android devices have one as well.

steam usually allows refunds in the first few hours of playtime, which supports this usecase as well.

syrrim··on Duolingo’s AI learns what you need to learn
The article reads like ad copy. Not surprising given the author. My working assumption is that duolingo's goal is to keep you using the app, and only ever teaches you a language coincidentally. It attempts to make you feel like you're adept at the language to keep you motivated. This is accomplished by teaching you a restricted subset of the language that you can become skilled at, but isn't necessarily sufficient in real world usage. It also contains a number of guardrails meant to prevent you from making any mistakes except by choice. This leads you to learn the language to an extremely shallow depth. Importantly, you forget how much you are relying on these guardrails, and hence think you have a deeper understanding than you really do. Hopefully duo's expansion into teaching other subjects doesn't maintain these flaws.
syrrim··on $6.96B was raised by private longevity companies in 2022
In either universe, the earth can only serve so many people. Since we're proposing hypotheticals, here's another one: suppose all the babies that would be born in either universe were born already, then we had to decide whether to keep the babies and kill off the old folks, or to kill the babies and keep the eldery. I don't think anyone would propose we let the older generation live. This hypothetical is in fact much closer to the situation we are in...
syrrim··on Zero to Nix, an unofficial, opinionated, gentle introduction to Nix
The pun also works in english, so I imagine they are.
syrrim··on Secure Scuttlebutt
Many well known archiving sites will attest that you made the post after it's deleted. If they don't, then random trustworthy individuals can do so instead.
syrrim··on Information about a recent security incident at Mailchimp
If being able to spot the tests doesn't confer ability to spot real phishers, then the tests aren't very good.
syrrim··on Sudoedit can edit arbitrary files
Is there a patch, or more detailed explanation of what causes this?
syrrim··on WhatsApp fined 5.5M euro by lead EU privacy regulator

syrrim··on Ask HN: Techwise, how did TikTok get so good?
Usually that it works via "functions" like aws lambda that don't maintain a long running process, but instead start a new process for every request.
syrrim··on Rust vs. C++ Formatting
Everything has security implications in c, but printf isn't particularly bad. Common use of it involves a fixed format string specified at the call site. This prevents the most dangerous use of it (user specified format string) and also allows the compiler to detect when the format string doesn't correspond to the types of the arguments. Both these failures can be converted into compile time errors in common compilers. Printf, for all C's other faults, really isn't that bad.
syrrim··on U.S. judge rules Apple Watch infringed Masimo's pulse oximeter patent
More likely they would reverse engineer your product and recreate it. This is more likely for products sold than for internal processes.
syrrim··on ReDoS “vulnerabilities” and misaligned incentives

syrrim··on Time to redefine normal body temperature? (2020)
It's obviously not rankine, seeing as it gives a conversion of ~30R = ~40C. Looks like its actually Reaumur: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C3%A9aumur_scale
syrrim··on Twitter Suspends @Joinmastodon
The tweet linked to the account on mastodon, it didn't simply link to a mastodon instance which happened to host elonjet's account. Presumably direct links to the subreddit would be banned, whereas reddit as a whole would be fine.
syrrim··on ElonJet Is Now Suspended
Twitter under musk will have a different set of biases from before. Whereas previously, every major platform would act in lockstep banning certain things, we can hope that musk will go against the grain. This is a healthy part of an information ecosystem. Ideally there would be larger number of players with a more diverse set of biases, but having musk in charge is still preferable to how things were before.
syrrim··on A neat XOR trick
In practice if you want the popcount of anything larger than a couple registers you'll want to use vector instructions anyways though. There are a lot of operations that will speed up certain applications if made into their own instruction, not all of them need to be.
syrrim··on VPN by Google One security assessment
Its a service that costs them money. Unless it gains them money somehow, they won't hand it out for free.
syrrim··on Apple kills plans to scan for CSAM in iCloud
Google is also bad. We are agreed on that.
syrrim··on Apple kills plans to scan for CSAM in iCloud
False positives are inherent to the justice system. While unfortunate, they do not cross any lines or send us down any slippery slopes. They are priced in. Thus, "what about google" is a mere "what-about-ism". People are ocassionally falsely accused, charged, and even convicted of crimes. That is not what is under discussion here.
syrrim··on Everything SBF is doing is in singular pursuit of not going to jail
Your statements can and will be used againt you, but they will never be used in your favour ("hearsay"). If you have something to say, wait to say it on the stand, in front of a jury. Until then, it will hurt you, and it won't help you.
syrrim··on The road to Dart 3: A fully sound, null safe language
He invented it for algol, a language with sufficient complexity that it was basically impossible to implement. The process of creating c involved stripping off everything but the most necessary features. Null references made it, nullable types likely wouldn't have.

Fp arithmetic has brought down space ships. Is floating point a billion dollar mistake?
syrrim··on Apple kills plans to scan for CSAM in iCloud
Apple's proposed system did scanning on your device, whereas google's system does scanning in the cloud. That is the distinction. A person's own hardware shouldn't be used to report them to the police. You cannot interpret technology like this in terms of what it is applied to today, because its use will be broadened in the future.
