syrrim··on Zig now has built-in HTTP server and client in std
A middle ground between exceptions in c++ and checking every function call for an error code in c.
syrrim··on Are We Sixel Yet
Most implementations I've seen use an ioctl to query those particular bits. That's implemented quite reliably, since the same ioctl is used for character size as window size. Some implementations just set the character size to zero though.
syrrim··on Are We Sixel Yet
You need to configure it properly or pass the -u flag for it to support unicode I believe.
syrrim··on Toyota: Car location data and videos of 2M customers exposed for ten years
The data collection would also be illegal in the EU I presume.
syrrim··on Google Pixel Fold
An inch in aspect ratio is a relatively large change, considering it entails ~70% of an inch in both dimensions. It would be better to compare screen area or vertical and horizontal dimensions separately, to get a clear picture of the difference.
syrrim··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
Either the competitor has no ads and doesn't charge money, at which point it would bleed money, or it charges a fee, and hence would be even less successful than youtube.
syrrim··on UK Blocks Microsoft’s $69B Activision Deal
Apple sells hardware and software/services, Microsoft sells primarily software and software services (surface aside). Hardware is the business of buying materials, improving them, and selling them at a premium. Software is the business of developing software, then selling it to as many people as you can. Software naturally lends itself to high margins. Hardware less so.
syrrim··on Roblox intentionally blocking Linux with Wine in their new update
They cared enough to implement detection and blocking.
syrrim··on China’s Ambassador to France Says Ex-Soviet States Lack Basis for Sovereignty
Afghanistan is a relatively poor, undeveloped country, yet they just demonstrated their sovereignty in your sense against the most capable country on earth. Of course, if the US wanted to they could have steamrolled afghanistan - but they didn't. What changed is that the willingness to destroy people in war evaporated, and so the ability in theory to conquer a country, and the willingness to do so given the costs it would entail diverged significantly. This might be particular to the west, and countries like china or russia don't care as much. But they are living in the world created by US hegemony, which in large part entails playing by the US' rules.
syrrim··on iOS 17 app sideloading might only be available in Europe
They're presumably claiming that european devices will be less secure.
syrrim··on Apple will launch a journaling app
Apple has full disk encryption across all their devices, no?
syrrim··on Deploying key transparency at WhatsApp
It's phrased as if it's an answer to a question, which it would be if it was the result of a prompt to chatgpt. Of course, a person could deliberately emulate that style as well, making this an unreliable way to determine whether a comment was written by a bot.
syrrim··on For the disabled, assisted dying can be eugenics by another name
The nazis would kill disabled people as part of their eugenics program. The title is presumably referencing that, not suggesting that euthenasia will have a positive effect on the gene pool.
syrrim··on “Inside-out Wankel” rotary engine delivers 5X the power of a diesel
If you had 18 such engines it would get you precisely 18x the performance, at precisely 18x the weight.
syrrim··on Show HN: YakGPT – A locally running, hands-free ChatGPT UI
They did seemingly position it as a generic name for this style of AI model, and other people have been using it in that fashion (eg "gpt-j"). It's usually recommended to contrast a brand name for your product with its generic name, so that the two don't become confused. Hence why scrabble is always subtitled "crossword game".
syrrim··on Google denies training Bard on ChatGPT chats from ShareGPT
What's the legal status of such terms of service? Suppose you simply said "i didn't agree to these terms" - what's the consequence? It seems like the strongest thing they could legitimately do would be to kick you off of their platform. Simply writing "we can seek injunctive relief" doesn't make it so.
syrrim··on Disney begins laying off 7k employees
You could read it as "disney layoffs: 7000 people", I guess.
syrrim··on Nations reach accord to protect marine life on high seas
We could attempt to define the "fair" population of a country based on its land area and some other factors. Splitting up a country into parts then wouldn't grant it a larger fair population, since you would split up the area as well. The necessity of doing this is that otherwise, when one country decides to expand its population, every other country has to accept a lower allocation of the world's resources. The difficulty of doing this is that you are inflicting on the residents of a country a lower allocation of those resources on the basis of something they had no control over, namely the country of their birth.
syrrim··on Unicode Roman Numerals and Screen Readers
It was meant humouressly. Not bothering the blind with such a silly anachronism is of course a good thing. In fact, we ought to get ligatures in fonts to protect the seeing from them as well.
syrrim··on Unicode Roman Numerals and Screen Readers
I've seen it argued that we ought to replace antiquated terms in shakespeare with modern ones as well. I was at pains to disagree. Replacing the numbering system would be easy by comparison.
syrrim··on PEP 704 – Require virtual environments by default for package installers
It already is though. Python loads modules from the current directory. As soon as you import a non default module, its already over.
syrrim··on Unicode Roman Numerals and Screen Readers
Can we agree that roman numerals suck? I seldom put the effort in to decode even short numbers like xi, let alone the year encoded in roman numerals. I personally read such a thing as "echs aye" in my head. If you intend your numbers to be comprehensible, you'll use arabic numbers. Hence, the fact that screen readers stumble on roman numbers is in fact a benefit, and we should be careful not to break this important feature.
syrrim··on Ask HN: Do you think ML model weights are copyrightable?
Difficulty finding a job, getting dates, etc, etc
syrrim··on Samsung “space zoom” moon shots are fake, and here is the proof
The recent kyle rittenhouse trial had an element that hinged on whether apple's current image upscaling algorithm uses AI, and hence whether what you could see in the picture was at all reliable. The court system is already aware of and capable of dealing with these eventualities.
syrrim··on Genes reveal striking diversity within similar ice age cultures
Is that humans specifically, or hominids generally? Not that the distinction matters too much, but it could be a source of confusion.
syrrim··on Genes reveal striking diversity within similar ice age cultures
Highlighting the distinction between the minority rule and the majority rule. If 1% of people decide to build monuments to last millenia, there will be monuments from thousands of years ago. If 1% of people decide to be carefully conservationists and only consume what the land/ecosystem can support... say goodbye to that ecosystem.
syrrim··on Effortless Performance Improvements in C++: std:unordered_map

   $ python
  >>> [hash(x) for x in range(4)]
  [0, 1, 2, 3]
syrrim··on Fourier analysis may help to quickly train more accurate neural networks
Gpt does this iirc
syrrim··on DMCA Takedown of iptv-org/iptv on GitHub
It seems like they don't publish updates on weekends or US holidays. So if it is a dmca, we're likely to see it published in that repo tomorrow.
syrrim··on I disapprove of what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it
in general, the concept of "taking away rights" is ill formed. my rights end where yours begin. in particular, i would take away the right of companies to fire people based on their speech outside of work, and i would take away the right of social media companies to censor people's political views. these can both be phrased as awarding new rights to people, namely a right to employment, and a right to internet expression. both of these come across as much more foundational rights than the alternative.
