syphilis2··on The evidence behind putting money directly in the pockets of the poor
I do not believe "some voters" will motivate the politicians. Instead it is the bread manufacturers, farms, importers, and every other large business with enough weight to convince politicians that a bread coupon is better for Americans than cash. Unsurprisingly they do this with cash not coupons.
syphilis2··on Most detailed ever photograph of The Night Watch goes online
My idea from decades ago, which I'd love to see implemented, is to capture the height information of the painting and reconstruct it in the browser using physically based rendering. Let the viewer decide what environment to put the painting in, and be able to move around and inspect from every angle. That's the biggest thing that's missing when looking at paintings online: there's no depth and no setting. Some paintings literally shimmer from small dots of glossy paint, others are heavily built up, I want that recreated online.
syphilis2··on Pi-hole 5.0
Thanks for the suggestion, it's neat that pihole maintains a git repo like this. I didn't get a chance to try it out though, I just installed from scratch.

syphilis2··on Ask HN: What website, from your early days on the net, do you miss?
The Applet Arcade https://web.archive.org/web/20020604024000/http://theshadowl... https://web.archive.org/web/19981201063456/http://members.ao... https://web.archive.org/web/19961222221629/http://www.serve....

Sometime in the mid to late 90s I came across the Applet Arcade. It's just a collection of Java applets maintained by a person who also runs a paranormal website (The Shadowlands http://theshadowlands.net/ ). I have yet to find its successor: The Javascript Arcade.

syphilis2··on How Antennas Work
Is there an index of all the pages on this site?
syphilis2··on The 2,500 year old history of why Python’s all([]) returns True
The question isn't "what should all([]) return", it's "why does all([]) return True". I think the answer is "because that's what the simplest implementation returns", not "because someone considered the mathematical implications".
syphilis2··on The 2,500 year old history of why Python’s all([]) returns True
I see many complicated explanations for "why all([]) behaves this way" that justify the behavior as good because of logical or mathematical purity. I am implying that these explanations are so long worded because they're wrong. I think they are good reasons for keeping the behavior as-is, but the code was probably written first and was written to be simple and just happens to produce mathematically consistent behavior at an edge case. It would be interesting to see the history of the function, to see if the implementation has changed.
syphilis2··on The 2,500 year old history of why Python’s all([]) returns True
Epicycles. Experience leaves me inclined to believe the code precedes the definition.

  def all(iterable):
    for element in iterable:
      if not element:
        return False
    return True

syphilis2··on DuckDuckGo is good enough for regular use
I'd really like to see people post screenshots comparing Google and DDG results for cases where they consider one better than the other.
syphilis2··on Teardown of a $1.25 LED Lightbulb
I have 960 fps video of some LED bulbs in my house. It's very apparent that some bulbs do not flicker (perceptibly), some flicker at 120Hz, and some flicker at 60Hz. At night I can sweep my eyes across the bulbs and see the dashed lines resulting from them turning off and on.
syphilis2··on Disk Prices on Amazon
Wow, SSD prices bounced back after December. I think most people were (and still are) expecting $100/TB to be the new baseline.

syphilis2··on A 60 GHz phased array for $10
The last application I saw was using micro Doppler signal recognition to determine if someone has fallen down. Consider a nursing home or hospital bathroom where cameras would be considered intrusive.
syphilis2··on How is search so bad? A case study
It's worse than the author described. Google won't even sort by date correctly. I ran into this problem years ago and it still exists. Example: https://www.google.com/search?q=where+to+buy+a+phone&hl=en&t...
syphilis2··on Moving towards a faster web
Maybe Mozilla can add something like this to Firefox, but for websites that break when using adblockers.
syphilis2··on Google are removing URLs entirely from search results?
Sometimes when using Google News it looks like the news site has loaded, but the browser still displays the Google URL. Does anyone know what is going on? It's obnoxious when I want to send the link to someone but I only have access to the Google URL.

Example URL: https://news.google.com/articles/CAIiEMVJWO7QqMIc4YUoEkX9LZM...

syphilis2··on Firefox 70
I like the text underlining options. But I wish the default CSS styling for <a> tags used text-decoration-skip-ink: none; .
syphilis2··on DuckDuckGo's traffic keeps growing
I'm not interested in posting it on HN (though that is a good way to improve ranking on Google). It's a small static website with a political theme. The title is fairly unique, but not made of uncommon words. Every now and then I search for it on Google and get a good laugh from all the garbage that shows up.
syphilis2··on Fashion industry emits more carbon than flights and maritime shipping combined
I'm glad to see growing awareness concerning plastic in clothing. The article mentions problems with cotton production as well.

With clothing I feel the same way I do about food, and the same way many people have felt for decades: I've been duped! It's not difficult, but it takes time money and effort to make good purchases, and that can be frustrating.

syphilis2··on DuckDuckGo's traffic keeps growing
I'm glad to see DDG growing in popularity, largely because Google won't place my website in search results. Bing does, DDG does, Yahoo does, but Google does not (unless I explicitly search for the exact URL). Depending on your view this is why Google's results are so good or bad.
syphilis2··on New research questions the evidence for health benefits of eating less red meat
It's also possible to force reader mode, for sites where Firefox doesn't want to display the icon. Append this to the beginning of the url:

syphilis2··on Modern C, Second Edition
Is there a place to report errors? I've just skimmed through and the pdf has some possible formatting bugs: tables inside code blocks, page breaks splitting the tops of code blocks, small things like that.

syphilis2··on Devilution – A web port of the original Diablo game
For some reason this only works for me if I'm not using a Private tab in Firefox.
syphilis2··on Cosmic Crisp Apple Launch
But what does it mean that someone "is able to answer only WA 38 questions, and not Cosmic Crisp ones."?
syphilis2··on Cosmic Crisp Apple Launch
I still don't understand: what is the difference between calling it WA 38 and Cosmic Crisp?
syphilis2··on The World According to Mad Magazine
I love the CD collection, and hope there's some plan to make a new version with the remaining issues.

MAD is better than any history book in that it gives a view to how people really felt about events at the time. It also records minutia in its jokes that otherwise become forgotten after decade go by.

In general it's good to read old humor if only to see how slowly things change. The Realist has their archive online and it's a good read because much of it is still relevant from 1958: http://www.ep.tc/realist/

syphilis2··on The internet is an SEO landfill
I'd love a search engine comprised of everyone's bookmarks.
syphilis2··on Let’s fix up Notre Dame with concrete and steel, but let the sun shine into it
This is a great informative article. When I tour historical structures I realize I'm never upset at renovations or reconstructions from long ago that changed the building. The changes become a part of the building's history. After all, these are not museum pieces preserved behind glass, they're functioning structures and still in use.
