synu··on Adults today care too much what young people think
Where are millenials in charge and sending things off the rails? I am sincerely curious, I haven’t noticed power has really been transitioned to them in any major way yet, for various reasons.

If anything it seems like there is a much older generation or two that is aging but never giving up control. Every ten years the average age of those in power seems to increase by about ten years.

I have learned a lot from my kids. They have their own personalities and perspectives to contribute, and the world today is different than when I was a kid. They are not really at all like a blank program that you just need to run through the same boot up procedure that you went through. At least in my opinion.
synu··on Show HN: America – Road Trip Simulator
You definitely can! I’ve driven from Ukraine to the Netherlands, going through Poland and Germany. The eastern parts of France were also quite nice.

I really like how when you are road tripping through Europe that there’s such different cultures and languages along the way, and old historical villages if you’re into that sort of thing. Mountains, forests, farms.. deserts in Spain, too, which I really want to see one day. That will probably be my next road trip.

The oldest example I can think of is Perl.
synu··on An ‘everything app’ would be bad for liberal democracies and free markets
Centralised systems seem to trend towards something like a protection racket.

synu··on The Crimean Bridge Is on Fire
Presumably Ukraine would have to lose the war for that to happen now.

synu··on Make-A-Video: AI system that generates videos from text
There are two classes of engines. One is like you describe, faster and faster brute forcing. AlphaZero was much more creative and didn’t use brute force.
synu··on 62 People own the same as half the world, reveals Oxfam Davos report (2016)
This seems unsustainable to say the least.
synu··on 3x new books added to the Pirate Library Mirror
Thanks! I was wondering specifically about how the logic of “you can’t claim something as a loss if you never had it in the first place” meant that you can never lose a job or source of income, but it sounds like that’s not really what they meant in the post I was replying to.
synu··on 3x new books added to the Pirate Library Mirror
What would it mean to lose a job or source of income you never had? I’m not sure I’m following but curious what you mean.
synu··on Citing new evidence, families sue feds, Raytheon, Lockheed over 1996 TWA crash
I’ve now seen hundreds of missiles striking their targets thanks to the Ukraine war. It looks pretty much exactly like you would guess it looks like.
synu··on Linux on the laptop works so damn well that it’s boring
I must have been unlucky, I battled what felt like endlessly with sound and video card issues until I just switched back to Mac.
synu··on Google loses EU appeal and is fined a record $4B
Wow, what country has three fines and you go to jail for a decade? That sounds intense.
synu··on The anti-inflation pivot of 2022
We have them in the Netherlands.
synu··on Subprime loans for college hiding in plain sight
It is probably most effective as a proxy for social class.
synu··on Hacker News stylized as a retro 90s macOS desktop
Actually the same on iOS for me.
synu··on Ask HN: What interesting problems are you working on?
I am working on video, but specifically trying to make it easier for anyone to “direct” their own content creatively without having to know all the technical skills for editing. Near to mid term is to try to use AI tech to enable this, though there’s actually a lot you can do even without that. My background is in developer tools (I was product director for CI/CD at GitLab) and so I am also trying to bring in the best from that experience around how to make hard stuff easy and difficult stuff at least possible.

I suspect there will be a lot of companies in the near future that make AI models with permissive licenses easier to use, along different niches (like I am doing for video). It is a really promising area and picking a niche helps with papering over the challenges with general models.

synu··on Macwright.com redirects HN readers away
I’ve thought about writing an extension to hide the top comment on every article because it’s often a pedantic disagreement with whatever the article is about, but not always (like in this case).

I do totally agree that the best writing comes not when you’re trying to build the ultimate defense against takedowns, but when you can express yourself more creatively.

synu··on The Ethereum merge is done
Wouldn’t you have better luck speculating if you just used your money to buy the coins directly, instead of buying GPUs and then paying more than the cost of the coin in electricity to mine it?
synu··on Countersteering
Here in the Netherlands kids learn to ride a bike on little two wheeled wooden bikes, that they start to “glide” on. It’s a nice system that gets them right into learning how a real bike behaves.
synu··on We secretly love meetings (2010)
I don't know about secretly loving meetings, but if you make all meetings optional (https://about.gitlab.com/company/culture/all-remote/meetings...) you'll quickly figure out which are the important ones, if any.
synu··on On my resignation as regulator of the Dutch intelligence and security services

synu··on Make better decisions with fewer online meetings
I built something similar. It didn’t really work as a business (or at least I wasn’t able to make it work) so I open sourced it: https://github.com/async-go/asyncgo

If there’s anything useful there feel free to scavenge, or if you’d like to talk about what I learned trying to build it let me know.

synu··on Understanding gambling addiction (2012)
They’ve really amped up the dopamine triggers and optimised the addiction loop since the days of opening up a pack of cards.
synu··on Understanding gambling addiction (2012)
Children have been on a gambling funnel thanks to loot boxes for about ten years, so we should start seeing the societal impacts now.
