syntex··on If you're happy with OpenBSD, probably any computer is good enough
The power usage is a serious issue, I recently scrapped an old PC. It was perfectly fine and usable, but I found it draws with graphics card more than 200W. And taking into account how much electricity rose in Europe it's super expensive to run. And the new one it's 15 times less. So let's take care at least a bit about the environment.
syntex··on When good ideas make bad business
It seems like you stopped far too early pursuing your idea.
syntex··on Ask HN: How do I choose the right resource to learn CS fundamentals?
If the student knows almost nothing, these are really good as they cover the most simple things.

If you already programming, they may be too basic.

syntex··on Python Is Eating the World
Actually, Golang isn't so great. Try to change something lower level, for example in their socket implementation. Also, it's trying to promise a sane concurrency and all code I've seen use mutex all over the place.
syntex··on Bitcoin has risen more than eightfold in past year
You must be from the past, as blockchain creates value by lowering cost of operations.

Bitcoin, Litecoin - money transfer

IOTA - micro transactions without fee ( Internet of Things )

Ethereum - contracts

Monero - private, non-traceable transactions

the list is long. 99% percent of these projects will fail, but 1% will create added value to the world.

judging from the link you provided is more like 5000000TH/s so you lost one zero
syntex··on Bootstrapping a SaaS Startup from Scratch
This is very similar to what Jonathan Blow is telling about programming games as Independent devs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjDsP5n2kSM
syntex··on A Commodore 64 Is Still Being Used to Run an Auto Shop in Poland
It survived a flood, but how it survived all that industrial dust for so many years?
syntex··on Making Humans a Multiplanetary Species [video]
The sociological difficulty is as big as technical one. He hired one of the best engineers available to solve technical problems. Probably the same work should be done on the sociological part of the project. Otherwise, we may see bad events unfolding on mars. Would be interesting to see open source project taking sociological issues as target.
syntex··on Making Humans a Multiplanetary Species [video]
I wonder what would be people's daily routine on mars. How colony with of thousands people will be organised? Would they have as much freedom as we have on earth, or the whole colony needs to be organized from bottom to top as the anthill colony.
syntex··on How a Technical Co-Founder Spends His Time
I don't need to.

I live in Warsaw and live here is a lot cheaper than in Western Part of Europe. My clients are Canada / UK based and I charge between $50-$70/h so even 10-15 hours a week is enough to make living over here.

syntex··on How a Technical Co-Founder Spends His Time
My max was 48 hours/week ( but this is an exception )

For living I build e-commerce solutions and backend stuff. And in free time I play more with a frontend. Recently with react/redux and in the long run with every possible new technology on the horizon. I guess I waste a lot of time doing this as most of these things isn't immediately related to client work. ( but over time It helps me to sell to them a few ideas for improvements )

Also, I track my time and habits in detail ( using rescuetime ). Probably without such careful loging I would overestimate how much time I am spending on actual coding.

syntex··on How I Built a Custom Camper Van (2015)
I am really jealous, it's my not fulfilled dream. But right now is kind of difficult with wife and little kid to carry such life.. offtopic The guy would like to write games. Then the first 6 months he spent to write his own programming language, then some time to write own scripting language "sink" ( why not LUA ). I would love to hear from the author what are the motives to write all these tools.
syntex··on How I Built a Custom Camper Van (2015)
I think he loves to reinvent the wheel as he created own language for game development "Kong"
syntex··on How a Technical Co-Founder Spends His Time
I work as a freelancer (Europe) and I think I work reasonably hard. But is really difficult for me to honestly log more than 10-15 dev-billable hours during the week. The rest of the time is spent in chat and learning / playing with a new things.
syntex··on RE:DOM – Tiny DOM library
There is a trend in javascript community to use es2015 for everything and sometimes developers forget to keep a very fragile balance between expressiveness and simplicity.
syntex··on PHP the Wrong Way
It's definitely not a satire. They are some valid points. It's not against using frameworks. I think it's more about finding the right solution for the problem.
syntex··on Magic – Completes signup forms automatically, with just an email address
Actually this make me very angry that my private details exposed in such creepy way, even if this is using some public APIs etc.

I would never sign up to service with such form.
