syngrog66··on Meta and Microsoft take steps to reduce employee usage of Claude AI
all of the above. plus less likely to be ripped off by competitor. (yes I know they have all been ripping off the general public)
syngrog66··on Claude Code’s suggested message feature: I think the real customer is the model
collective madness
syngrog66··on Account bans on Reddit
AI slop and adverstories are a growing problem on Reddit. It worsens the S/N ratio of subreddit subscriber feeds and so I have little sympathy for those who contribute to it.
syngrog66··on The cost of lies: A Mineserver story
serial lying is arguably one of the top problems in US politics now, if not the top
syngrog66··on High Diesel Prices Bankrupted 16 Trucking Companies in Just 30 Days
We've been the target of a stochastic economic sabotage campaign for years. I've been surprised the US economy has been in as good of shape as it is, considering all the obvious sabotaging events/trends.
syngrog66··on Germany’s RobCo hits $1B valuation
The Fallout nod alone justifies millions in value.
syngrog66··on The Tao of Backup
entertaining, yes, but maddeningly verbose way of conveying the rules
syngrog66··on The technology to eradicate mosquito-borne disease exists
we should genocide mosquitoes, period
syngrog66··on Agents don't need memory, they need documentation
memory which persists blurs the line into documentation or databases
syngrog66··on How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent
using less electricity downstream is a nice compliment to less loss upstream and has the advantage for the enduser that its within their span of control. both strategies together are ideal
syngrog66··on A Staff Engineer's Guide to Inventing Work
in broadstrokes its about doing more work biased to longterm and tech debt paydown rather than nearterm and tech debt accum in the race to market
syngrog66··on We’re forgetting what darkness feels like
I've learned to put high value in darkness at night and silence while alone. Helps my brain be more happy and peaceful, and reenergize/reset better.
syngrog66··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, by William L. Shirer. my 5th+ read

Weaveworld, by Clive Barker. my 2nd read

Surface Detail, by Ian M. Banks

devtest reads of my WIP book on computer performance

syngrog66··on America.gov
risky click, given circumstances
syngrog66··on The Board Game of the Alpha Nerds (2014)
I've won a Diplomacy tournament and lost one. I had prepared several weeks for the first one. For the second one I did no prep, it was a last minute walk-on to help replace a booked player who was MIA, and I hadn't played at all for over a decade, so was obviously rusty.

But if you google for my Dip tournament participation only the 2nd one is findable online. It was a lesson on the "dark ages" that was much of life prior to the WWW and modern social media. Prior to 2000 or so large swathes of life were not documented digitally and published on the Internet. By 2026 any random burp or brain fart can get broadcast to millions.

Another fun fact: a few decades after my Dip tournament win I got to work for the US State Department.

syngrog66··on 2DWillNeverDie
2D physics is fun to model in game engines too, and simpler than 3D.
syngrog66··on The forgotten battle of East Lansing
Good reminder that all government is based on force, threat of violence and coercion. Authority comes from the fist, the gun, the daring act. We only paper over it enough to make ourselves feel better.
syngrog66··on Once Claude can measure something, it can make it faster
once I can measure something I can make it faster

if I hand this challenge off to Claude then I will lose the capability to do it myself, and will become dependent on Claude. that is bad

syngrog66··on Unreal Agent
unfortunate name. misleads
syngrog66··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
The US has no national security at present. Anything is possible.
syngrog66··on How Hacker News ranking works: scoring, controversy, and penalties (2013)
I concluded long ago that voting rings are active here, along with paid/inauthentic upvote farms.
syngrog66··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
EV software. performance book. education service. short fiction
syngrog66··on JetKVM Mini
on surface I like the design but due to nature of security risk I'd want to know a lot more about the company and how its made.
syngrog66··on 'Old Person Smell'
I stopped reading after seeing the 3rd name:

Jillian Pretzel

Roya Javid

Arshad Rather

syngrog66··on Nvidia to acquire Hugging Face
it was also yet-another-huge-reward to those who took part in a big publicity splash (ie. win) for an AI biz:

OpenClaw guy: rewarded by acquihire

Bun compiler Zig-to-Rust rewrite guy: rewarded by acquihire

HuggingFace "hacked" by "rogue" AI: rewarded by acquihire

syngrog66··on Fine, I'll build my own text editor
A mini-vi/vim I might be willing to reinvent for myself, if I ever felt it was needed or a net win. but would (obviously) prefer not. free time & energy are precious
syngrog66··on Show HN: HN Match Maker – Matching "Who Wants to Be Hired?" With "Who's Hiring?"
are you paying the original post authors for republishing their content?

syngrog66··on Bug Blindness
Long ago I realized I had the ability to see race conditions in source code, at least more easily/accurately than others on average. It was helpful when reviewing the code of others, esp more junior. And I once briefly considered getting a custom T-shirt made with the words "I see race conditions." (in the spirit of the famous scene from The Sixth Sense with "I see dead people.") and wearing it to the office during formal code review meetings. But a friend talked me out of it when he pointed out it might get misinterpreted as being something racist rather than having to do with threading and concurrency.

The whole "I see bugs where others do not" reminded me of that same phenomenon.
