syngrog66··on Show HN: I've been using AI to analyze every supplement on the market
1. dangerously unwise area to apply "AI" given all its known problems, and whats at stake

2. I tried using that site and immediately saw problems and broken behavior. The "Ask AI" feature (sounds pretty key?) literally did nothing. and doing a search for say aspirin yielded results that... had no aspirin! no brainer to bail out fast

syngrog66··on Apple picks Gemini to power Siri
I used Gemini heavily in 2025. It was very bad and frustrating to use. Shame on Google for shipping it in the condition they did. No quality control. No pride in craft.

syngrog66··on Start your meetings at 5 minutes past
start at 1pm. end at 1:45 or 1:55pm. known wise pattern for a long time

syngrog66··on How Markdown took over the world
BINGO. a key point he either is ignorant about or strangely chooses to overlook
syngrog66··on How Markdown took over the world
90%+ of its value is that its plain text. with just a few simple conventions for annoting

the individual also claimed (in so many words) that the trillion-dollar AI industry is "controlled" by Markdown. he has either a deeply wrong understanding of the technology, or a shameless ambition for making wild claims to boost traffic

strong writing skills. but weak on technology and nuance, or history of our field

groan HN needs a mute/block feature so we can mute/block folks like you. toxic. get a life
syngrog66··on Show HN: Prism.Tools – Free and privacy-focused developer utilities
CLI programs have existed for decades. no browser or connectivity needed. more private, more composable

going to a random stranger's website (with a 2 day old account, and new no-history GitHub account) to generate one's privacy-critical passwords or hashes is particularly insecure and insane. glaring antipattern. trusting that "it always only runs in your browser" is foolish. This is how malware gets injected when the rug gets pulled out

there are safer, less brittle and more modular and scalable ways of doing all the above. avoid it, kids

shame on everyone involved

syngrog66··on Stop Doom Scrolling, Start Doom Coding: Build via the terminal from your phone
dont try to code while standing on a train. one of many antpatterns a wise engineer should learn to avoid, as part of polishing our craft. also: dont juggle chainsaws, etc ;-)
syngrog66··on A small collection of text-only websites
sounds like a net win. Markdown is a superset of plain text anyway. You could make Markdown the "source" format for each page and then the web server decides at last second which MIME type header to return based on requested suffix. But even if they request .txt the page body could be identical to the md

I have a few WIP books where Markdown is my source format for similar reasons. I then use pandoc to render to txt, html, pdf, doc or epub as desired.

syngrog66··on Stop Doom Scrolling, Start Doom Coding: Build via the terminal from your phone
Claude not needed to "code from anywhere you are" and certainly not from your phone. no LLM needed. no agents. Tailscale or any other VPN not needed

use a laptop. (trying to do it with only a phone-factor UI is madness.) have a mobile-friendly ISP if desired or needed. solved. been solved for decades

so much of the AI BS hyping is about inventing supposedly unsolved problems. like Google showing me ads to convince me to use Gemini to write a README. no thanks, kids, have been able to do that for many decades using only my brain, eyes, fingers and vi/vim

syngrog66··on A small collection of text-only websites
I like the spirit of text-only but Markdown is similar enough and gives clickable links, embeddable static images etc. Its the JS, CSS, video, audio and surveillance shenanigans which have gotten out of hand and become noisey (and nosey.)

syngrog66··on Roomba maker goes bankrupt, Chinese owner emerges
I bought a Roomba around 2006. It died within a month. Never bought again. Today I'd need to assume it would serve as a surveillance tool by the Chinese gov, or other bad actors, and so would also never buy one.

All of IoT is a security anti-pattern now.

syngrog66··on AI agents are starting to eat SaaS
I stopped reading after too many references to tasks solvable by a 1-line invocation of a CLI tool like ffmpeg or pandoc.

syngrog66··on Programming peaked
strawman dystopia. simply choose to continue applying wise practices of old. be the effect you wish to see in the world. just because others are jumping off a cliff like lemmings does not mean you must as well
syngrog66··on How elites could shape mass preferences as AI reduces persuasion costs
This is obvious. No need for fancy academic-ish paper.

LLMs & GenAI in general have already started to be used to automate the mass production of dishonest, adversarial propaganda and disinfo (eg. lies and fake text, images, video.)

It has and will be used by evil political influencers around the world.
