synecdoche··on Milan prohibits all outdoor smoking as ban takes effect
Cigarette smoke is one of the most disgusting and at the same time lasting odours. I think smokers are not aware of this. I can smell a smoker at 50 meters distance on the street.
synecdoche··on Apple Photos phones home on iOS 18 and macOS 15
Apple decided to siphon user photo derived data without prior consent. The purpose, capacity and risk of said data being in others’ hands we are expected to take their word for. All while not informing users in advance or trusting users to themselves decide to start the siphoning. By doing this they have violated some users trust.
synecdoche··on Masks, Smoke, and Mirrors: The story of EgyptAir flight 804
Could someone explain when A) it’s not the correct methodology, unless B) is preferable?

B) appears preferable only under duress and then only to the benefit of saving one’s own skin temporarily, however long that may be.

synecdoche··on The 1955 Le Mans disaster changed motorsport
To what cost? Societies are still reeling from the consequences, for who knows how long.
synecdoche··on The 1955 Le Mans disaster changed motorsport
Lucky you
synecdoche··on The 1955 Le Mans disaster changed motorsport
Western countries are already clean enough. Very far from what it was in the 70s and earlier. There is a point of diminishing returns for everything. After that is seems to be more about returns to the individuals that claim to be for the cause, than to society as a whole.

There are orders of magnitude more serious threats to the future of humanity than climate change, such a imminent war. In part due to resource shortages, like energy, which in part was caused by prioritising misguided policies inspired by those same ideas.

synecdoche··on Bhutan, after prioritizing happiness, now faces an existential crisis
There is no basis for the claim that different things of some category would progress exactly the same given the same set of circumstances. Those different things, like culture, have significant impact on everything, including economic growth.

I'm sure you can think of a culture or policy, which you consider backwards, and counterproductive. Well, there you go.

synecdoche··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Again, it’s an opinion. It doesn’t make it so just by having it.
synecdoche··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Who are you calling uneducated? Just because your have an opinion doesn’t make you an authority on what people under other life conditions need to lead a successful life. Speak for yourself.
synecdoche··on Order and orient the keys on your keychain
Yes, small carabiners with keyrings for different purposes that get attached to the main ring when needed. And an airtag on the main ring.
synecdoche··on Ask HN: What's the "best" book you've ever read?
There may be as many reasons to read it as there are people on the planet. People who want to control other people's thoughts give me the chills.
synecdoche··on 1913: When Hitler, Trotsky, Tito, Freud and Stalin all lived in the same place
There is probably a point where things go from happening gradually to happening suddenly. Very few can relate to the horrors of nuclear war or have the consequences of nuclear bombs in living memory.
synecdoche··on 1913: When Hitler, Trotsky, Tito, Freud and Stalin all lived in the same place
Feeling humiliated and driven to a point where one’s subjective feeling is that there is nothing left to lose, one does not need to be a madman to launch everything one has. Vengefulness is sufficient.

Note that subjective assessment of the situation is sufficient. Putin is dependent on nobody to come to such a conclusion, especially not the west, and why should he care anyway? Western war escalation enthusiasts apparently are willing to take the risk anyway or do not seem to understand this.

synecdoche··on 1913: When Hitler, Trotsky, Tito, Freud and Stalin all lived in the same place
>> Russia [...] currently has foreign troops on its land that are attacking it.

> Ukraine is the defender in this conflict. Every reasonable action it takes to encourage a Russian withdrawal is, by definition, defensive.

War is peace etc etc.

I'd like to point out that an attack is the opposite of defense and the scale of the attack does not make it not so. Your argument does not negate the GP statement which btw is true.

synecdoche··on Arduino PLC IDE
In my opinion Ladder logic is easiest to troubleshoot, as cause and effect can be easily followed, especially when being connected online and seeing the signaling. Unless events are too quick. Then no language has the advantage. Then data trace is helpful.

Structured Text is superior when it comes to calculations, bit manipulation and code flow (loops, conditionals etc). Sequences diagrams are advantageous for abstracting sequences. Function Block Diagrams are good for connecting abstractions. They all have their place imo, except Instruction List, which I can’t think of having a single advantage.

synecdoche··on You are not dumb, you just lack the prerequisites
If passion, or own experience, is missing it may be a case of unknown unknowns for both parents and teachers.

The Matika site looks really nice but I have difficulties comprehending the instructions. Even the very first one for first grade. “Children step by record.” What does that mean? I tried the next one. “During addition we write addends below each other…” What? If all addends are below, no addend is on the top. It makes no sense. Then, “…and the sum below the line” with no line in sight. What, where, which line, how? That was frustrating.

synecdoche··on Belenios: Verifiable online voting system
The in person secret paper ballot voting system on voting day appears to be a system with some of the least drawbacks, which is likely why it has been so popular.

Mail-in systems work too, with their own set of benefits and drawbacks, and is used in combination with the above in some countries.

synecdoche··on Belenios: Verifiable online voting system
Or the other way around; the so called experts are actually tools in a propaganda machine, and people choose to rather believe their own experiences than second hand information.
synecdoche··on Belenios: Verifiable online voting system
This relies on the voter to have enough autonomy to be able to independently access their online ID. It would be easy to circumvent by separating the voter from their ability to identify themselves online. Either by keeping their means of identication from them during the voting period or by being the gatekeeper to the computer where their online ID is stored, for example with a password.

It also relies on the voter caring enough about their vote in the first place to be willing to attempt to do it, with whatever possible personal risk that entails.

synecdoche··on Speed limiters now mandatory in all new EU cars
Probably most of the time, but not every time. Which strategy is best in different situations cannot easily be predicted I'd imagine.
synecdoche··on Mouse Heaven or Mouse Hell? (2022)
> let's not pretend it's valuable research

Why not? How can anyone determine that research is not valuable if it's not carried out? There may be ethics points of view, that people may have different opinions about, but how does that exclude the possibility of useful results? Can the degree of usefulness be determined by the degree (or the inverse degree) of ethics? If so, how? Arguments that use self-evidence as argument for their correctness are not useful.

synecdoche··on Denmark to charge $100 per cow in first carbon tax on farming
Then they should have neither credit nor penalty.
synecdoche··on Feynman’s Razor
Thinking that people that have trait X in common to also have some admirable trait Y is unfortunately wishful thinking. The military may for some be one of the last areas of such thinking.
synecdoche··on Super Heavy has splashed down in The Gulf of Mexico
Weight savings and less complicated rocket without the legs makes for higher payload capacity.
synecdoche··on Super Heavy has splashed down in The Gulf of Mexico
Feasible but not likely.
synecdoche··on Ancient Egyptian Stone-Drilling (1983)
Could someone point to where in the article that is? Figure 5 is not a counterexample in my opinion, for the reasons mentioned in an one of my other comments, namely a single deviation from a spiralling line (if there are such lines) is not proof that all other lines are not spiralling. It is only a counterexample with regards to those particular lines.
synecdoche··on Ancient Egyptian Stone-Drilling (1983)
A discontinuity being an exception from a great majority of surface consisting of spiralling and continuous lines is no proof, nor debunking.

A spiral form being an exception from a great majority of circular lines may be just that, an exception, and would point towards a non-spiraling cut.

The photo with the discontinuity shows one side only. Therefore there is no way of knowing if and how the lines are connected on the obscured side, and no conclusion can be made either way.

synecdoche··on Ancient Egyptian Stone-Drilling (1983)
Right. Where may we see the debunking?
synecdoche··on When a black hole and a neutron star merge
What? That's simple deduction. Is it really that trivial? Am I missing something?
synecdoche··on Transforming of Communist-era apartment blocks that dominate Eastern Europe
I do not agree. Beauty is a necessary prerequisite for a healthy and prosperous life and by extension society. Rich or poor.
