synecdoche··on Homeschooling hits record numbers
> they don't want their kids exposed to the other "cultures" in their area whether that be immigrants, other religions, or LGBT people.

Culture is distinct from race. Some cultures advocate for the destruction of others. Some don't.

synecdoche··on BBC director general and News CEO resign in bias controversy
Nonsense. Language evolves but not by edict. Same with biology.
synecdoche··on Study: MRI contrast agent causes harmful metal buildup in some patients
I think there is a non-insignificant number of people who would understand the word safe as no risk, who if something bad happened to them after submitting themselves to such a safe procedure, would find themselves deceived. Technically, I think they would be correct. Therefore, it should be explained that there is a risk but that it is on some order that they can relate to, like the risk of walking down the street.
synecdoche··on EU age verification app not planning desktop support
Likewise in Sweden. No bank that I’m aware of is limited to require mobile only login.
synecdoche··on The case against social media is stronger than you think
I understand this view is unpopular, but nevertheless. For something to be systematic there needs to be some set of rules governing it. I have yet to see any evidence of discriminatory rules as part of any western company or government policy, except for affirmative action and equivalent policies which do have such rule sets, where some group is prioritised to the detriment of other.

Without it, there would be no way to get information from the source. In msm all we get is the msm view. When compared to what was actually said, done or written then you have a chance to make your own opinion. You only then can compare what is in msm and what is not. And the bias is relentless. Which makes it a propaganda machine.

Of course there is garbage in social media as there is in every field. Find the source if there is one recorded. Msm rarely if ever refer to any. And no wonder. It would risk undermining their publication, which they peddle as unbiased.

synecdoche··on Wikipedia survives while the rest of the internet breaks
An example of this in biased media is that people or entities of one end of the political spectrum is almost always qualified as extreme in some way while those from the opposite end of the spectrum is almost never qualified as extreme, as if it were self evident that it is true. Hard to unsee once you know what to look for.
synecdoche··on Grok Code Fast 1
Institute of Peace you say? It couldn't sound more like double speak could it? Similar to the DDR.
synecdoche··on Rotring 600 Ballpoint Pen
I like them too, but they get empty quickly. Only a fraction of the cartridge is ink. The majority is plug gel and pressurised air. Apparently that’s required for it to function properly.
synecdoche··on Rotring 600 Ballpoint Pen
I used a Trio-pencil extensively during my educative years. Beauty in writing and diagram drawing made it enjoyable and helped to focus. I still have it. With a nice patina. Still functioning.
synecdoche··on Grok 4
Why is it that there are posts on X listing Grok as number 1 in many comparison tests (retweeted by Musk) but elsewhere it’s mostly disparaged, almost exclusively on political or moral grounds?
synecdoche··on A new law in Sweden makes it illegal to buy custom adult content
This take is uncharitable and ad hominem. Wish I could downvote.
synecdoche··on A new law in Sweden makes it illegal to buy custom adult content
> This is not the same as cleaning latrines or collecting garbage

> Although as I'm thinking about it, there are other jobs which have a similar soul-toxicity as sex work

It’s not as clear cut as one might think.

What makes sex work different and why? Garbage collection, and many other jobs, expose people to disease or hazards. What makes sex work special?

synecdoche··on A new law in Sweden makes it illegal to buy custom adult content
Nevermind actual policy outcome when there is opportunity for posturing.
synecdoche··on A new law in Sweden makes it illegal to buy custom adult content
There’s no psychological harm in the other extreme?

synecdoche··on How can traditional British TV survive the US streaming giants
They can do like Sweden's public service, steal everyone's money, wheter you watch the garbage or not. Great service that.
synecdoche··on Librarians are dangerous
In a way there’s nothing wrong with ”near miss”. It’s a miss not far from the target. Still a miss.
synecdoche··on A university president makes a case against cowardice
Printing?

btw, you got my upvote

synecdoche··on ToS;DR
ToS are highly unfair, because the company has had a group skilled in legalese draft them over enough time as deemed needed, whereas a layman is supposed to understand and base their next decision on something written in a language hardly understood by almost anyone.

For that reason ToS should be illegal unless, at least, written in layman terms.

synecdoche··on The young, inexperienced engineers aiding DOGE
> Japan’s debt ratio is over 300%, and they’ve had no issues with...

I don't know what the fallacy of "something is the same along one dimension, therefore the situation along some other dimension(s) must be the same too" is called, but this is a clear example.

synecdoche··on One in four 2020 Tesla Model 3 failed the Danish periodic inspection in 2024
> These guys like it

By such reasoning anything extremists like is extremist by association.

How does that make sense?

synecdoche··on We're bringing Pebble back
2 short taps on the top button on Garmin Venu Sq 2 when swimming is the default activity. It counts laps automatically. It can be setup to display 2—4 statistics during the swim. Now if someone could explain what the other thing is that appears for a few seconds when changing direction at the wall in the pool is, and how to disable it, that would be useful. Two counters, one in large font and below one in small font. Typically they start at, or are, 0.

1. Survivorship bias 2. Countries didn't do it. Individuals did.
synecdoche··on Why is Git Autocorrect too fast for Formula One drivers?
This may be something specific to Japan, which is where the maintainer is from. In the Japanese industrial control systems that I’ve encountered time is typically measured in this unit (100 ms).
synecdoche··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
This argument is in my opinion backwards and therefore does not make sense. First willingness to do well by themselves must be demonstrated sufficiently to gain interest and trust, then healthy and mutually beneficial friendship may begin. On state as on individual level.
synecdoche··on Why is homeschooling becoming fashionable?
In what way is the ”othering” different than what children otherwise do, apart from being in different kind of schools? As you wrote children (or more generally) people can make up all sorts of reasons for that.
synecdoche··on Why is homeschooling becoming fashionable?
”don't breed detached extremists”

This doesn’t follow. In addition, there are plenty who fit that description who did go to a state school.

synecdoche··on All clocks are 30 seconds late
It could be argued that people can’t be made to feel anything, apart from pain. How people react, on the other hand, may be quite different.
