synack··on Ask HN: What travel apps do you use while traveling?
Not strictly a mobile app, but I keep offline Kiwix snapshots of Wikivoyage and Wikipedia on my laptop. It mostly comes in handy on trains with intermittent wifi.
synack··on Linux Runs on Raspberry Pi RP2350's Hazard3 RISC-V Cores (2024)
That was Intel Quark. It was too expensive for the “big microcontroller” use case and too power hungry for the “small Linux” use case.

The marketing was confusing, I’m not sure Intel even knew what it was for, except to show investors they had an IoT play.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Quark

I found some of these boards in a box last year and was unable to do anything with them… Intel has thoroughly erased all documentation and SDKs from the internet. If anyone has those artifacts, please push to archive.org

synack··on As AI gobbles up chips, prices for devices may rise
Industrial microcontrollers and power electronics use older process nodes, mostly >=45nm. These customers aren’t competing for wafers from the same fabs as bleeding edge memory and TPUs.

The world ran just fine on DDR3 for a long time.

synack··on NTP at NIST Boulder Has Lost Power
Spanner depends on having a time source with bounded error to maintain consistency. Google accomplishes this by having GPS and atomic clocks in several datacenters.

synack··on Ask HN: Cloudflare WAF Alternatives?
I've been using Cloudfront Functions to do some of the filtering that a WAF would do. It's quite flexible, but you've gotta figure out your own rules.
synack··on The RAM shortage comes for us all
I wonder if we'll start to see instance type shortages or price increases from EC2 and GCP if they can't get enough DRAM for latest gen servers.
synack··on Someone at YouTube Needs Glasses: The Prophecy Has Been Fulfilled
Every time you see an ellipsis "..." you know that the designer put form over function. Hiding data from the user is never the right answer.

They could use their fancy AI to generate shorter titles.

synack··on SQLite 3.51 Is Out
Release notes https://sqlite.org/releaselog/3_51_0.html
synack··on Automakers hunt high and low for chips as supply crisis worsens
Which chips specifically are we talking about? Nexperia's products page looks like it's mostly basic semiconductors and standard logic ICs, all of which are available from several manufacturers. Sure, they might have to modify the PCB layout if the pinouts are different, but that doesn't seem like a major hurdle.

synack··on Computer science courses that don't exist, but should (2015)
When I was at RIT (2006ish?) there was an elective History of Computing course that started with the abacus and worked up to mainframes and networking. I think the professor retired years ago, but the course notes are still online.

synack··on Ask HN: What did you learn from AWS outages?
No, I was trying to download from my home internet- Astound in Seattle. I run a local recursive resolver that was unlikely to have those subdomains cached.
synack··on Ask HN: What did you learn from AWS outages?
The DNS names- `bucketname.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com` and `bucketname2.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com` failed to resolve during the outage.
synack··on Ask HN: What did you learn from AWS outages?
I have a cron that writes daily backups to S3 buckets in both us-east-1 and eu-west-1. I was a bit surprised that both buckets were inaccessible during the outage.

Now I have it writing to Backblaze B2 instead of eu-west-1. Hopefully that’s completely independent.

synack··on Mister Macintosh (2004)
If you wanted safe and predictable you could buy an IBM PC. Apple was trying to be something different.
synack··on Indefinite Backpack Travel
Swiss army knives are cheap and easy to find in every city.
synack··on DARPA project for automated translation from C to Rust (2024)
Have you tried Ada?
synack··on Building the heap: racking 30 petabytes of hard drives for pretraining
IPMI is great and all, but I still prefer serial ports and remote PDUs. Never met a BMC I could trust.
synack··on Java 25: Oracle is Cool Again
> OpenJDK (the "Name") is a trademark of Oracle America, Inc. ("Oracle") (the "Trademark Owner").

https://openjdk.org/legal/openjdk-trademark-notice.html

Not worth the risk of stepping on their toes. There are plenty of other good programming languages to choose from.

synack··on Java 25: Oracle is Cool Again
I don't trust Oracle to not sue me whenever they feel like it. I refuse to work on any Java codebase as long as Oracle has anything to do with it.
synack··on Two Slice, a font that's only 2px tall
I’m a fan of “Tom Thumb” for small OLED displays. https://robey.lag.net/2010/01/23/tiny-monospace-font.html

I wrote a kinda goofy Ada library for it https://github.com/JeremyGrosser/tiny_text

synack··on Amazon RTO policy is costing it top tech talent, according to internal document
How do they allocate headcount to different teams? How often is that rebalanced?
synack··on Introduction to Ada: a project-based exploration with rosettas
Claude does an okay job of translating from other languages into Ada. It works especially well if you write the specification (.ads) file and let it write the body (.adb)

Ada’s strictness about types and a preference to allocate on the stack rather than the heap means more bugs are caught at compile time. Claude Code is really good at iterating on compile time errors without much user intervention.

synack··on Show HN: A minimal disk price comparison site for Amazon drives
Please don’t scrape my site.
synack··on Use One Big Server (2022)
The complexity you introduce trying to achieve 100% uptime will often undermine that goal. Most businesses can tolerate an hour or two of downtime or data loss occasionally. If you set this expectation early on, you can engineer a much simpler system. Simpler systems are more reliable.
synack··on Show HN: Splice – CAD for Cable Harnesses and Electrical Assemblies
Could work well as an Onshape App.
synack··on Teenage Engineering's free computer case
Looking at the build PDF, you'd need a pretty large printer to do a single piece like that. Would need to split it into a few panels and have some sort of joinery or fasteners to make it fit on most consumer printers.
synack··on Ask HN: What alternatives to GitHub are you using?
You push a branch and send an email.
synack··on Ask HN: What alternatives to GitHub are you using?
A directory called “git” with a bunch of bare repos accessed over ssh. You don’t need to make this complicated.
synack··on Debian 13 “Trixie”
Agreed, but for laptops it’s nice to keep a copy of the DVD iso on disk and in your apt sources so that you can install stuff offline.
