symmitchry··on WeWork 'Accepts Takeover by Softbank'
I can't understand how Adam Neumann continues to make such insane income from all this. It's demoralizing.
symmitchry··on Convert Curl Syntax to Python Requests
Paw, which many people love, has a neat and similar feature: you can get extensions that convert the request you build in the app to any format: curl, python, etc.

It's very handy.

symmitchry··on The Crisis for Birds Is a Crisis for Us All
What an incredibly depressing time to be alive.
symmitchry··on We Created a Planning Diary Making $160K in 6 Months
I also found it interesting, and depressing. Of course this is off topic, but it goes without saying that plastic is convenient compared to the alternatives. "We made $160k!" but "a few diaries" show up with water damage and their plastic-free plan goes right out the window.
symmitchry··on The Cloud
Incredibly ironic that your perfectly useful & reasonable reply is being downvoted.
symmitchry··on Tesla's Screen Saga Shows Why Automotive Grade Matters
Honest question: I'm surprised at such a hard stance against what I perceive to be an "early adopter" product. Did you not feel that buying a Tesla was a gamble?
symmitchry··on Laptops to Stay in Bags as TSA Brings New Technology to Airports
Keep in mind that it's only like $50 CAD for 4 years. You're basically paying for the printing of the card and nothing more.
symmitchry··on What we did when our investors told us we weren't working hard enough
In Part 2 they brush off the fact that "a few people left the business" immediately before saying "everyone was much happier".
symmitchry··on VW plans to sell electric Tesla rival for less than $23K: source
> VW group has been leading the world in electric vehicle press releases

ha!

symmitchry··on Ask HN: Over 60 = no engineering jobs?
From a technical point of view, I keep a "master" resume with every job I've ever had. Then I do what top comment recommends, which is break out the parts I want for whatever roles I happen to be applying for.

I also agree that applying for dev roles when you have manager experience is really going to raise questions. I was only a manager for one brief stint and I still had to reassure every single interviewer that "yes, I was interested in a purely technical role".

Age: very late 30s

symmitchry··on Go 1.11 got me to stop ignoring Go
> I have major gripes with PEP-8, and if you ever see me using it I want you to shoot me in the face.

That sounds extreme. I've never heard this before. Why?

symmitchry··on Amazon private label brands are quietly taking over Amazon.com
I have to agree with you, because I've never received a package late, and I've gotten a couple in < 24 hours. Maybe Canadian shipping is better?
symmitchry··on Don't learn Dvorak
Dvorak and Vim works just fine. I did it, without doing any Vim rebinding of keys. It's screwy for a while but ... So is learning Dvorak. And some of the Vim stuff works better in Dvorak, so it's net basically no issue.
symmitchry··on Former Tesla Firmware Engineer Discusses the System
Does anything about this thread really surprise you though? As to be unbelievable? Do you think that other car manufacturers are that much better? I've read so many insane stories about software in Toyotas (or was it Honda?), and those are very old, very well established companies. That a company like Tesla would have rock solid software would be a miracle.
symmitchry··on Nike Says Its $250 Running Shoes Will Make You Run Much Faster
Actually Noakes (I think it was) found that reducing weight was only effective to a point. Being barefoot is definitely not faster than having shoes on. See my other comment above re: Bikila.
symmitchry··on Nike Says Its $250 Running Shoes Will Make You Run Much Faster
People have never believed that being barefoot was faster. Even Bikila (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abebe_Bikila), who ran an Olympic world record while entirely barefoot, was faster in shoes once he got used to them.
symmitchry··on Keeping a plaintext “did” file
I think this is important. One of the most career oriented people I know, call him a mentor of mine, kept entire binders full of everything he did. Every accomplishment. He prepared for performance reviews like he was going to war.

As a manager I suggested to my reports that this in addition to proving your work, it also helps as a way to understand whether you are stagnating at work, or continuing to learn and evolve.

symmitchry··on “I'm basically giving myself a permanent vacation from being BDFL”
I'm a little confused though, by his feelings here. Why did he feel the need to "fight so hard for a PEP" if it was so controversial, and everyone was outraged?

I do understand people's points about "the age of outrage" and "internet 2018" but still: the PEP wasn't generally accepted as being a fantastic improvement, so why did he feel the need to fight so hard for it?

symmitchry··on Speaking with a crew member from a NASA simulation of a long space mission
The sleep deprivation thing is really surprising to me. Does anyone know why? I would be able to sleep for probably 10-12 hours a day.

I wonder if they have research that shows that less sleep makes for healthier crew?

symmitchry··on Having Alzheimer’s at 38 (2015)
This sounds insane to say, if you haven't lived with a parent or family member with dementia, but if that happens to me I really hope I have the nerve to kill myself.
symmitchry··on Silicon Valley Firms Make It Nearly 'Impossible' for Cambridge to Hire AI Staff
That is probably true, but what university is going to pay a prof $1M USD? I think the issue remains valid. Also I doubt it's only UK salaries that are crappy these days.
symmitchry··on GitHub Stars !== Usage: React Is Still Blowing Vue and Angular Away
In general I agree with you, but our company is very "consistency" heavy. So someone high up has to make a decision: which framework to adopt, because once that decision is made, it's sticking for a long time.

And sadly I don't think developer happiness & satisfaction are real concerns for a company that knows how to make money.

symmitchry··on 1976 letter from Silicon Valley exec calls Steve Jobs 'flaky' and a 'joker'
What are "catalog sheets"? What was Jobs asking for?
symmitchry··on Plastic Bag Found at the Bottom of World's Deepest Ocean Trench
> No we don't. China just imposed a waste import ban.

JUST imposed. If you follow any municipal news (Australia, Canada, who knows where else) you'll know that the RECENT ban is causing huge issues.

symmitchry··on This Asteroid Shouldn’t Be Where Astronomers Found It
Like all articles about space, the headlines was 1000 x more exciting than the contents.
symmitchry··on Glassdoor has been acquired by Recruit Holdings for $1.2B
Our company encouraged us to leave reviews... What a bad idea. Every new review was absolutely terrible, as expected.
symmitchry··on iOS 11.4 to Disable USB Port After 7 Days: What It Means for Mobile Forensics
If the device is not unlocked for 7 days, the USB port stops working (for anything but charging.) It won't brick the device, which can still be unlocked any time, it just prevents someone from taking more than 7 days to hack open your phone, via the USB.

edit: so in your case, perhaps yes, you would have been hooped.

symmitchry··on Duolingo Suddenly Has Over Twice as Much Language Learning Material
Absolutely. I did Duolingo Spanish (although I a) was fluent-ish in French, and b) had taken a Spanish course at University.) I can say without a doubt that I learned a ton (via Duolingo) and a trip to Cuba made it very obvious.

I am far from fluent, but I could get by in nearly all situations.

I'm learning Swedish now, and it's getting to the point where new languages are easier and easier to pick up. My partner is further than me, and knows a shocking amount of Swedish just from the Duolingo app.

symmitchry··on My Python Development Environment, 2018 Edition
Pyenv is great. On our Macs we've had zero issues installing older, specific versions of Python, every time. Highly recommended. (Getting it working properly with zsh was a bit frustrating, but that's my own fault.)
symmitchry··on Google Memory Loss
I find it incredible that google can profit from Gmail. (Actually I find it incredible that Google can profit at all.)
