sxcurry··on Climate threats now dominate long-term risks, survey of global leaders finds
For context: Between 2014 and February 2019, Curry testified before at least six Republican-led House committees, expressing the idea that the dangers of global warming are overstated and difficult to predict. These testimonies include statements criticizing President Obama’s climate plan, the UN climate action plan, and other policy proposals aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
sxcurry··on Ever Plugged a USB in Wrong? (2019)
I also discovered this while trying to plug my telescope's camera USB cable into my PC in the total darkness, and wondering why the camera didn't work.
sxcurry··on Jeffrey Epstein and MIT: FAQs
1) Negroponte responded: “I know him quite well. The person who is his closest friend is Marvin Minsky, who even visited him in jail. I would take Berlusconi’s money, so why not Jeff.” (By March 2013, Berlusconi, the former Prime Minister of Italy, had been accused of hiring underaged prostitutes and dating underaged girls.)

2)“I’ve also talked to Nicholas [Negroponte] as well who had met him and he also agrees that we should treat Jeffrey with respect.”

3)Negroponte pushed back on concealing Epstein’s attendance, responding (in part) “Of course he can come and would be welcome …. I would make absolutely no fuss over his coming and welcome home [sic] 100%.”

Wow, just wow, are there no depths too low?

sxcurry··on Apple TV, Apple TV, Apple TV, and Apple TV+
Exactly. Now I feel a bit bad because I'm not confused at all - it just all works.
sxcurry··on Wanna Impress an Engineer at a Career Fair?
“Bitchin” “make that sucker twerk” Really? I think you are mostly letting me know that I don’t want to work with your company.
sxcurry··on Arctic sea ice reaches second lowest minimum in satellite record
It will be interesting to see how statements like this are viewed in another 30 or 40 years. I suppose most deniers will deny ever having denied, but hopefully there will be clear historical records to set things straight.
sxcurry··on Arctic sea ice reaches second lowest minimum in satellite record
I don't think there is any way to "convert" a denier. This isn't a case where logic or well-reasoned arguments will make a difference. People have varied and deep-seated reasons for denying climate change, and I think it will take a generational change-over to finally make a difference.
sxcurry··on Build a 6502 Computer
I’m currently building Ben’s earlier 8 bit computer. His videos and kits are great. Can’t wait to get started on the 6502.
sxcurry··on Yield Curves Invert in U.S., U.K
As Paul Krugman says, "What looks like raw ignorance and prejudice is, in fact, raw ignorance and prejudice".
sxcurry··on Apple Reports Declining Profits and Slowing Growth Again

sxcurry··on I Took Apple To Court And Won, Twice
As a 'pro' I have a backup iMac, backup MacBook Air, and backup MacBook Pro. I couldn't imagine working without this kind of safety net, regardless of the brand of equipment I'm using.
sxcurry··on Don't donate canned goods to food banks (2017)
Please consider the source when you read this article. The National Post is Canada's right wing "newspaper" filled with misleading articles and half-truths.
sxcurry··on The Touchscreen Infotainment Systems in New Cars Are a Distracting Mess
Same in my 2017 Audi - prevented a sure collision with a deer, and like you my foot was still moving towards the brake when the car stopped. Also, no false alarms in 35,000 miles.
sxcurry··on This Old House: The Rare Home-Improvement Show That Spotlights Skilled Workers
Great list. Also really good - Mustie1 who does a lot of old VW "rustoration", and South Main Auto, who's a whiz with electronic diagnosis tools. I've learned a lot from these channels.
sxcurry··on Audible and audiobooks, the fastest growing part of publishing
Many comments on this thread seem to be confusing cost with value. I have both Libby and an Audible subscription. Libby - free, limited selection, clunky weird interface, long waits for books, production glitches. Audible - nearly every book, available now, good production, return any book anytime, fairly good app, costs $ every month. Up to you which is the best value.
sxcurry··on A 5km Asteroid May Briefly Occult the Brightest Star in the Night Sky
I think SOFIA is used mainly for Infrared astronomy. By flying above most of the atmosphere it can observe in the infrared, where Earth based telescopes are severely limited.
sxcurry··on WireGuard for MacOS
Curious - how do devs develop on a 2.5 year old OS. Aren’t there risks that things won’t work in recent releases?
sxcurry··on Hyperloop startup Arrivo is shutting down as workers are laid off
“The ethos of the company is trying to switch the paradigm,” BamBrogan told The Verge in 2017. “Mobility and transportation are both words that talk about the ‘getting there.’ And we want to make it so seamless. I don’t want to get to dinner with my friend, I want to be at dinner with my friend.”

It seems that anyone who would fund this kind of garbage talk might have more money than sense.

sxcurry··on Texans say voting machines changing straight-ticket choices
Another Oregon voter here. I just finished filling out my ballot in the privacy of my home, with the voter pamphlet at my side for reference. So simple and sane.
sxcurry··on Carbon Removal Technologies
For the curious, here's a website that thoroughly debunks Judith Curry's "science" : https://www.skepticalscience.com/Judith_Curry_arg.htm
sxcurry··on Companies headquartered in California can no longer have all-male boards
The comments so far might give insight into the terrible sexism of tech in general.
sxcurry··on How I gained commit access to Homebrew in 30 minutes
I'm disappointed that it took this long for an article on a Homebrew vulnerability to turn into Apple bashing.
sxcurry··on Discontinuation of Mac Support for Autodesk Alias and VRED
What about all the new MacBook Pros just released, the new iMac Pro, and the upcoming new Mac Pro? You may not like these Macs, but Apple's plans seem pretty clear.
sxcurry··on Why Japanese Whisky Is So Good and So Hard to Find
Yes to the Wild Turkey - good taste and great value. Best drunk in the woods from a metal cup with a bit of ice.
sxcurry··on Why Japanese Whisky Is So Good and So Hard to Find
I stayed in a hotel in Kobe a couple of years ago. The room had mini bottles of Yamazaki in it, and it turned out they were free, and replenished every day! Neecdless to say, my wife and I took full advantage...
sxcurry··on I Did a Terrible Thing. How Can I Apologize?
Ok I’ll resist. Percent Christian in the US is now down to 70% and dropping rapidly according to Pew. In another 10 years we’ll thankfully be able to say this is not a Christian nation.
sxcurry··on Breaking Up with James Joyce
I second this - a fascinating and well-researched deconstruction of Ulysses. And fun to listen to! Frank's death was very sad - I felt like he was a friend of mine. I had donated to his Paypal account several times to thank him for the podcast, and he always replied with a nice personal response.
sxcurry··on Apple to Close iPhone Security Hole That Police Use to Crack Devices
Remember, in general the police aren't tech savvy, and not very bright in many cases. They don't know that a tired trope like this merely identifies themselves as idiots.
sxcurry··on Edmunds Tesla Model 3 Long-Term Road Test Update for April
